For anyone wondering, the "paint thinner" grappa is a liquor made using the leftovers of grapes after wine production, and barricata means it was put in a barrel to give it a wooden flavor It is usually associated with countryside/mountain parts of italy and is one of the most common types of liquor since it's relatively cheap and poor to produce, however a 120€ bottle is the creme of the crop as far as I know Anyways, really happy to see it featured and that you enjoyed it, and overall seeing an upload from you guys really put a smile on my face Cheers

Boris' guess of paint thinner isn't too far off, most paint thinner is acetone whi h has a strong harsh grape like smell. A strong alcohol made from grape lees could smell similar, especially if it had a very sharp noticeable alcohol taste.

I had a Russian friend give me a Samagon recipe when I started distilling years ago. It was largely water, cane sugar, brewer's yeast and tomato paste. It wasn't too bad after a couple of trips through the still, and a run through his suggested charcoal and boiled sand filter. Not that cheap to make when you'd finished. The reason I bring this up is Boris called the Grappa 'Igor's samagon", which as far as I know means 'homemade' in Russian. I have several Italian and Greek friends give me their version of grappa over the years. Some were amazing, most were shit, just like Nonna's supposedly incredible cooking. The ones aged on wood taste like brandy with raisins, and the ones aged in glass taste like cheap vodka with raisins. Yours was definitely a wood aged grappa....and they cost more to make, hence the price. The shit ones are cloudy and tasted like raisins , water, beer and burnt yeast mixed with hot dog water. I nearly accused the guy of giving me the still backings, but he was drinking it himself. I helped him build a better still.

“raisins, water, beer and burnt yeast mixed with hot dog water” mmmm yes 125 euro well spent 😁. In all seriousness i know you said the flavor of the grappa they drank would be more like port but man personally other than straight vodka i don’t like much else other than whiskey or scotch.

As a Frenchman, I wondered when I saw the glasses "Will he find Gray Goose at home?" because it is the only quality mainstream vodka produced here. Glad you enjoyed it. and by the way, if you're interested in tasting some French regional alcohols less known than wine (red, white or Champagne) and Cognac, I would be happy to send you a selection of bottles ;) Thank you for your videos, always so simple but always so funny. Paint thinner is actually pretty accurate description for Grappa. Grappa is made from what's leftover after wine production, they take the "lees" or leftover mashed grapes, yeast, and liquid and then distill it to get any remaining alcohol while leaving the sediment behind. Most paint thinner is acetone which has a harsh smell often compared to grapes or synthetic grape flavor. Alcohol + grape flavor would smell a lot like acetone or paint thinner.

Ayyy Boris, glad to see you having fun with this video. I will say if you ever want to take a dive into the unholy there's a cheap vodka that has some infamy here in US that at best I can call a blasphemy against Vodka and at worst it's probably paint thinner being sold as a drinkable spirit...and it comes in at about $7USD or a little over 7 euros for a 750ml bottle. If you ever wondered what it was like to drink four time distilled lighter fluid on the cheap without the guaranteed death, look for "Karkov" vodka.
