I think i'm gonna use a Blizzard Sorc on my very first Playthrough through Hell. I made a Barbarian and played him Frenzy, an absolute beast for bonking things to death, but that became very one-dimensional rather fast. I'm also worried to go beyond normal difficulty with him since i'm aware that he really heavily relies on quality equipment later. I guess i'm starting with Fire Tree and then respec into Blizzard. Seems pretty straightforward to me. But first, i'll bonk my way through act 5 with the Barb since i like finishing things that i begun. :D

I can recommend going through normal and nightmare with fireball and hydra, it's awesome (hydra scouting and corner farming is so good}. I did a respec to blizzard in hell and it's working for me.

If you have a Normal Combat Merc he has double the effect from Prayer if you equip him with an Insight polearm which can be nice when teleporting around.

One thing I'm missing here, is how to spec the sorc for solo hell. If you start going exclusively cold, you will find a lot of monsters you want be able to fight. I'm getting into hydra, just to have some damage at all and plan to respec it fully into blizzard once I'm done with hell, but I don't know if it's a good choice. This information could be useful.

You'll probably want a lighting build more if your soloing hell. Seems their are less things with that resistance but your always going to run into that issue with sorc to some degree unless you have two elemental main damage spells.

if you just spam potions and find an fcr item you can just rush through very quick, but you also need to stand a bit closer to mobs because the projectiles are slow. that being said, I kinda like to have a sorc as my second char just because of that "boring" section; I tend to import good starting gear and some money for mana pots and just keep spamming away until I kill Duriel, maybe Mephisto - at that point Glacial Spike is usually already up. Eldritch/Shenk runs to make Lore/Insight available, and hopefully Spirit weapon if I'm lucky to have one by

I use to pvp on D2 back in 2006/2009 and the main build for soso (for pvp anyway) was full ES build, is that still the case? so it was everything into Mana really if you had enough strength.

Basically you just skip monsters that are immune. Alternatively if you get lucky an infinity runeword on ur Merc can break many monster immunities. It's most common to just skip monsters you can't kill

Hey, anyone has some advice? Does it make sense to go full energy shield and telekinesis with this build? obviously you dont have as much dps, but does it help with surviving (especially with the insight merc from 2nd act?)

Not really specifically no. Unfortunately for energy shield to be viable u need a HUGE manapool, if u build completely around ES maybe in regards to survivability u will gain a little bit but at the same time lose that due to dps loss. ES however is very much needed for a nova sorc, but a nova sorc requires some pretty hefty gears to be efficient in comparison

A note about Infinity: it will break Toorc’s cold immunity in Travincal making trav runs a viable option for a MF sorc. Great place to farm runes, facets, charms, and unique jewelry.

Great guide! I just have a quick question: I rerolled at 24 into Blizzard and now I have to drink a mana bottle after every 2 Blizzards. should I have waited until I'm able to get a "Spirit"? Stay fireball spec until 30.. then respec into frozen orb. Blizz feels terrible until higher lvls and when u can get 105 faster cast rate

Always prioritize spirit for yourself! Then get insight for merc. Spec into frozen orb at 30... i dont like respeccing into blizz until i have unlocked nm mephisto. Use frozen orb and fireball to get through cold immunes in hell.

Having the insight runeword on a 4 open socket grey/gray polearm gives your mercenary a buff that greatly increases your mana regeneration. Some other gear gives +mana when you kill something.

I missed some info about Magic Find - you explained about top tear MF gear and low budget gear, but did not suggested in what locations to use such builds - like low budget gear might only be viable in Hell act1 and so on. Don't worry, I have my first blizz sorceress in Hell, I'm like half way through even getting the basic budget gear and I'm farming any location where cold immunes are not common (now Act V). But I have to admit that it helped a lot when someone gave me The Reaper's Toll in one of those "free stuff" lobbies and I reached lvl 75 with my merc. Till than he was very squishy. Now he can deal with cold immunes without much problem for me.

hello Llama and everyone else. Im a noob at this game. I had a few questions. Going into full ice tree like that. What happens when you are going through hell and run into ice immunity? having no other elements seems like you would run into issues (I only play alone, and very very rarely with a friend.) also, would this full ice build be good for frozen orb max instead of blizzard max?

If you run into immunes, run. Thats basically it. If its a immune superunique like Chaos Sanc. seal bosses, then let your merc deal with them.

So should I shoot for 17 into cold mastery or max it out? For a full blizzard sorc. Lvl 90 just re-speced last night and took points out of CM for F-Orb's synergy to ice blast to get exactly 17 for -105% enemy resistances. Isn't maxing Cold Mastery a waste?

You note "don't stat your character like that" when pumping strength to equip gear, but at level 75 I don't really have much of a choice. In order to wear my Spirit shield I had to fully put 156 points into Strength, as I have no Strength gear yet. Is that pretty typical early on?

Yeah that's what I do. You need a torch or engima to not. IK belt let's you save a bit also

You mentioned Skin of the Vipermagi as not being expensive...you mean to trade? With the cross platform play now, how will trading work?

Expensive is relative, especially early game. The nice thing is Viper does drop rather easily. I found 2 in NM within a week (on Plugy SSF). One from Andy and one from a council in A3. NM Andy is definitely a good place to farm for one and think you could get one without too much trouble. Later on, when game is around more you can likely trade one for gems but I can't comment on cross platform, good luck.

Nice guide. Just a question about the merc gear. You said infinity is not the preferred option. Then how do you break the immunities of the cold immunes. Coz as far as I know only conviction and lower resist can break monster immunities.

I think hes poin was, that the Cold immunitie is actualy the hardest one to brake , so u dont brake most of the cold immunes with Infinity . U count on ur merc to kill them , or u can shop for a wand with Lower Resists charges .
