Good video. I have the Redgrass Desk Lamp. Wasn't cheap, but it really made a difference for me. At 75 I need a lot of light to see what I'm working on. When I don't have enough light, edges get indistinct and details get obscure. This light really works for me.

I'll second the Redgrass option. I have one, and it's amazing. I'm in the lighting industry, so I really wanted to test their claims of having a high CRI value (the "trueness" of the color). It doesn't disappoint. Colors really pop much better than my other LED task lamps.

Another vote for the RGG R9. Apart from being a really solid, great quality light, I bought it specifically based on the no-flicker promise, as I get migraines. It's really helping with that! But yes, it's more than 3x the price of your Lucent.

I use a "light arch". I bought "daylight" USB powered self adhesive LED strip, electrical conduit cover (flexible stuff), and screwed the conduit to some 2x1 wood on either end, then stuck the LED strip in the conduit. Cheap, and low power consumption, and very bright, plus the light is all round, not just from one direction.

I know a lot of people talk about the bulbed task light but don't spend a lot of attention to the type of bulb. I work in Lighting and it was nice to hear you talk about this topic. A brand I can recommend is Soraa. They are museum quality with exceptional CRI and R ratings. I typically recommend them anytime I have to display artwork, but their pricing reflects their niche as a gallery bulb.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 ай бұрын
Yep, that's a great shout, and there are some nice bulbs you can get reasonably costed quality bulbs. I should have gone deeper into CRI for people, but most bulbs people get are 90+.

1. Daylight is roughly 5500 - 6000 Kelvin; 4500 K is cooler than an incandescent bulb, but significantly warmer than daylight. Note that classical painters tend to like to paint under "northlight", which is light from a north window, so closer to 8000K, which will tend to get you to paint warmer to compensate. (I generally use something in the 5500 K range.) 2. For softer light, use a large lighting surface and move it as close to your model as you can. The disadvantage is that the closer the light, the more rapid the falloff. (It's a function of inverse-square law.) The strength or directness of the light has nothing to do with how harsh the shadows are. What matters is the angle subtended by the lit surface of the light when seen from the subject. 3. When choosing a light, the color rendering index is crucial. Anything rated 95 or higher should be fine. (If you mentioned this, I missed it, and it's more important than most other considerations.) Personally, I use a pair of photographers' LED light panels on small tripods. The ones I have are from Viltrox, but the mfr is mostly irrelevant. You can get them from your local monopolist with a smiley package or from a photography store. The panels have adjustable color and intensity and have high CRI. With this kind of panel, no diffusion is necessary. The panels aren't expensive, but you have to manage support and power on your own, which can be a significant expense. (I'm a photographer, so I had some of that stuff already.) I find the color adjustment to be useful if I want to use odd lighting schemes (moonlight from above and firelight from below, for instance) in seeing how that light might interact with itself on the figure.

I use Green Stuff World’s Hobby Arch lamp, which is an arch lamp. It runs at about $70 and uses the included light strips instead of bulbs. I like that I don’t ever have to adjust it. If I paint under the arch then all sides are lighted equally. It also has a dimmer knob, which is amazing. However, it also doesn’t have the flexibility of movement that a standard lamp does. The feet also sit on my desk, which annoyingly do get in the way of where I naturally want to put my pallet or rest my hand. I also wish I had seen this video sooner, because it runs on the cool side at 6-6.5K, which is definitely evident. I will look into this Game Envy light in the future, because it sounds much better.

I’m using a pair of high CRI LED panels (viltrox L116T) mounted on those IKEA arms. Adjustable colour temperature and brightness with a nice rectangular diffused output. I like them a lot, but I’d have probably gone the lucent if it existed when I built them! It’s absurdly good value and nicely portable. Great to hear that there’s an excellent product at a reasonable price

What I use that I don't see mentioned much is an arch light like acrylic nail artists use in salons. They give complete all-around light; good ones (usually between 70 and 100 dollars) have lots of adjustable settings; most importantly (and I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in this video) these type of lights are generally designed to have very high color rendering index values, which can help you see the actual hue and value of your paints better.

For the longest time I was wanting to get my hands on the Red Grass Gaming R9 light, but that cost was a bit a steep at the time. Instead I opted to upgrade my little IKEA bulb up to a Neatfi 2500 and I've been happy every since. It works great in my workspace and has adjustable brightness. I think it sits right around 5500K for temperature so it really has this nice hue to it while working

I upgraded to Redgrass R9 desk lamp last year. Not cheap! ($260 now). I bought 2 by mistake, which was a deal then at $400, and to much hassle after currency exchange since it was coming from Switzerland to US to try to correct it. I thought I would save the 2nd one as backup. I use both now. I was able to use the weighted base of my desk lamp for the 2nd one as I have no place for the included clamp on the right side of my desk. They are not as positionable as the Game Envy (which I've been staring at since you started using it), but WOW it's nice to see what you're painting!!! If I had known about the Game Envy sooner I would have gone with them, but I'm still happy. I also have supplemental lighting as I am in a basement with a desk enclosed on 3 sides. I have a 2 ft overhead Led shop light, and some smaller led lights and led strip lights lighting up my paint racks. Don't take your sight for granted!!!

Good introduction to lighting. Main thing is to avoid having sudden changes of lighting in the work environment otherwise your eyes will trick you; have to keep the environment lit with the same lighting. Also the work surface you paint on should be a neutral grey colour as well. I've been eyeing up the Elgato Key Light led panel lights for painting, a bit pricey though compared to the Game Envy light.

Hi Vince! I thought we'd here of more different lamps (What are your thoughts on the many LED-strip offers?), but since there's an open KS for thewhite version of the Lucent, I guess it can be circumstantially more interesting, especially for people outside the US. Just a word on that one, by the way. For us Europeans, it is definitely not an $85 offer. First that doesn't include taxes (I know, I know: that's how brains are wired on that sode of the Atlantic. The thing is - it's legally mandatory to have taxes included prices as the biggest, one price in the EU, so our brains are trained the other way.) There's also shipping. I looked at the total yesterday and it's a $156 offer for me from my country. Through the KS, it's $126 - better, but still clearly not a $85 kind of deal. ;) Today I use an "old" circular-neon architect lamp. It has a built-in magnifier that is utterly useless for our hobby, but it has the advantage of emiting light towards the mini from a lot of directions (and not from a line). Granted, it'd be easier on my eyes with more ambiant lighting too, so I'm looking for a complement. :) Thanks for sharing your views, Vince! (That was pun intended, but with a friendly tone too.) Happy painting.

Hey Vince I have a video request for you. I ended up purchasing a complete set of reaper MSP paints after experimenting with vallejo and army painter. I love the colors and the matte finish but ive been struggling with everything coming out chalky. I figured out i was thinning way too much but even using it straight out of the bottle on my wet pallete was still too thin. So i just switched to a dry pallette and im blown away how much better and easier they are to paint with. So here is my request could you do a video specifically on reaper paints and how to take advantage of their translucency and other nuances around them. Hard to find anything specific to reaper and they are so different then the majority of other brands(thinner, matte, translucent) etc. Anyway love your work!

my girlfriend bought me the lucent as an early birthday gift, and its been really nice this last month. I think I like having a couple lights that sit low and will probably bring out my old lights for it, but i no longer have to worry about the main light getting in the way of my brush since the arm is fairly long and maneuverable. prior to this i just used Neewer SL70s attached to mic arms. With the redgrass light I was skeptical super expensive, and the marketing of the CRI being supposedly so much better than everything else.... Lost a lot of trust in some folks recommendations as a result. Seeing it in person it was fine but still not 260 dollars fine. can't say i noticed a difference in my mini under it than my neewer LEDs, but not being a sponsored painter with it at home, i can't actually compare side by side.

I have one of those painting booths with LED strips on 3 sides along the top. It lights the miniature really well. One thing I noticed though that bright lights make it much easier to paint, but you should be conscious of the lighting situation where the miniature will be played or displayed. Some of my minis turned out great under good lights but seem too dark and not contrast enough under normal room lights. So now I am usually trying to make a point of painting brighter and lighter colors that look just right under normal lights even if they look a bit desaturated under my work area lighting. As for the painting booth - I can't recommend it enough. With an asterisk. Now, for some reason Amazon photos all display them with an outletpointing straight in your face :D You don't have to do that. In fact, if you are airbrushing you should point it to the window instead. The asterisk is - by default the single switch controls both the lights and the fans. This is stupid. I disassembled mine and split it into two switches, controlling the fan independently. I still wired them in chain so you can't run the fan without lights, but you can run the light without a fan. This is probably a bit too much DIY for most people, but the result I am very pleased with. If you are handy with a soldiering iron and have a drill bit to punch a hole in the case for another switch - it's a very easy modification to do.

Possibly a silly question, but do you find your lights ever interfere with your brush? I use an architect's light, but usually paint with the model held up quite close to my face, and therefore quite close to the light. Sometimes the brush handle will knock against the light itself, which is less than ideal when doing fine detail.

It varies, but generally bulbs in arms that can be adjusted and moved around.

Any chance you’ve used one of the Neatfi XL 2200 lights? It’s supposedly 2200 lumens, but it doesn’t feel all that bright to me. I’m super interested in the Lucent but I would really like to see a comparison.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 ай бұрын
Yes I have. It's a perfectly acceptable light, I just think the Lucent is way better, it's still very bright in the area, but more easy to move and shape the light to your needs. I don't se any real difference in the brightness despite the claims.

@@VinceVenturella Thanks, Vince! Very cool, the articulating arms is what has me excited about the Lucent. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to be dimmer than the Neatfi XL. On paper it should be, but we all know that specifications don’t always reflect reality.

How is the light in the red spectrum? I was planning on investing in a Redgrass R9 Desk Lamp because it is so close to natural light, but if I can save myself over £100 then I will.

I use only magnifiers, and for detail work. I don't like magnifying lamps, it locks you in place too much and I've never found them useful.

Loved this video and have been needing a good light for awhile. I went ahead and ordered this LUCENT light and a new wet palette with the link, but unfortunately it's been almost 5 days with no shipping and no response after reaching out to Game Envy. Anyone else had this issue?

I rock the desk lamps recommended by adam savage over on tested... they are fucking 30 bucks (or they where when i bought the 5 i own:P) and run off standard 12v powerbricks! 2 on my deks, 2 in my spray booth, 1 random, all attached to cheap ass desk lamps

Looked into this Lucent light... Yup,the delivery toUK costs $50 + you pay 20% VAT. Which makes it twice as expensive for me. At which point it is cheaper to buy 6 architect lights than 1 lucent😮

For UK I found a good alternative. You can search for "Marbosa Led Desk Lamp". It looks like Luten's small brother, also with antlers, but it costs 70 gbp and not 160 with tax and shipping. It also comes from US with a US plug. It has very nice stepless temperature and brightness controls, and it is very bright at the top setting - I have it set up at around 30% and it's enough. Anyway, not cheap, but a good alternative for UK and EU given Luten's delivery prices. 😊

A few people already mentioned CRI, color rendering index. Most LED lamps have CRI 82 or so, fine for general tasks, but not sufficient for painting. Look for lamps or luminaires with CRI 90+, the higher the better.

Never realized how dark my lamps and room lights were until i got my redgrass lamp lol. definitely on the pricier end. But its really nice to have the color benefits they advertise and the sheer volume of light provided without any of the glare of a single directional light. Painting got sooooo much easier when i could see 😅

So how much 'weight' do you place on CRI values? Does that relate to Lumens?
@VinceVenturella

THey matter, but as long as they are 90+ (which the Lucent is, it's 95+), you're good.

My problem has come down to a like high lumens. Like literally I have 5K (no that's not color temperature) lumen bulbsq. The problem I've been having is that I can't find lamps anymore that take regular bulbs or they won't allow for the power that a 5k+ lumen LED takes. For some reason most of the lamps I can find on Amazon will no longer power a 30 wath bulb... Why? Used to be the dumbest bulb you wanted was 80 w so why has everything gone to where it can't even power those anymore? I really dislike this world that we have moved into where I can't buy standard replacement bulbs because everybody has made their lamps proprietary. Now I have a lamp that will do bulbs this well from Ikea. The problem is is that the lampshade isn't long enough and it didn't come with a diffuser... So now I'm stuck trying to find a better lampshade. So far no luck.

Yes? Every type of a lightbulb with high color accuracy (= spectrum as close to daylight as possible) will emit blue light, you need blue light to see blue and every other color which uses blue as a composite (including white).
