Im so happy the director of the stage musical directed this movie. I notice a lot of theatre adaptations don’t translate on film because they hire directors who don’t understand what make theatre so special and magical

I know this is nitpicky but Matilda the Musical wasn't made for Broadway, it was made in the UK. More specifically it was first staged in Stratford-upon-Avon and then came to the West End (where it is still playing) before it made its way to Broadway
@Lady-Seashell-Bikini Жыл бұрын
I agree with your nitpick. Broadway and West End are sisters, but I like to distinguish them. Shows like Phantom of the Opera and Matilda are West End, while shows like Sweeney Todd and Beetlejuice are Broadway. It depends on where the show originally premiered.

The CHOREOGRAPHY was insane. The “School Song” where the kids are dancing behind the gate reminded me so much of the movie “Us.” It was equally terrifying and outstanding
@elizawoods7819 Жыл бұрын
YES ABSOLUTELY YES! I had to play that scene over like four teams because of the kids dancing behind the gate. The choreography as a whole, with its musicality and all those isolations, just floored me.

It's still in cinemas in the UK! It's been there for months and there are now regular sing-along screenings, which is so lovely. So it sucks that you didn't get that in the US but it is getting the recognition it deserves somewhere
@moonamigi Жыл бұрын
The kids were so talent it made me want to cry because I was so happy for them showing their passion lol. I liked how this film is slightly darker than the original film. Matilda is more spunky with attitude and her life and how's she's treated by her parents is meaner and sadder.

To add to the fun facts about the Broadway version, there were 4 actresses playing Matilda's and they would rotate. And one of them was the same actress who played the sister in Hereditary! I found that out right after watching Hereditary and it made me a less scared of the movie thinking that she was also Matilda haha

It played in the cinema in Britain! It’s a very English story, as much as I love the Mara Wilson film, it was always jarring to me that it was made American. Also, Roald Dahl had a very sad childhood which involved a lot of abuse from teachers and other adults in his life hence those themes in all his books. Loved this episode!

Two or more melodies played at the same time is called polyphony. It means that a melody is being accompanied by another melody rather than block harmonies. This was used a lot in medieval and Renaissance music (music before 1600.) In the Baroque era (1600-1750) they started to refer to it as counterpoint and expanded on it. Musicals take advantage of polyphonic texture all the time and I love it. (Idk if there's another term you're looking for, but this is what I remember learning years ago in music theory and history lol)

I just take pleasure in the DEEP irony that so many people thought that a story, about a girl who loves books but was raised by parents who only watch TV, was a movie first, rather than a Roald Dahl book. I saw so many comments saying that they were tired of musical adaptations of movies, when this was an adaptation of a book, which has been a tradition of musical theater for a long time!

Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors. He also wrote some interesting autobiographical stuff (Boy, Going Solo).He was a pilot and spy in WWII and survived crashing in the Libyan desert. Also wrote some really dark and hilarious short stories (see: The Collected Stories of Roald Dahl; not kid friendly). Highly recommend!
@saraha4972 Жыл бұрын
He is a good author but he’s also proudly antisemitic. He said “There is a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity, maybe it’s a kind of lack of generosity towards non-Jews. I mean, there’s always a reason why anti-anything crops up anywhere; even a stinker like Hitler didn’t just pick on them for no reason.”

Matilda was one of the first books I actually related to as a small child. The way matilda as a character was written in a way that I found incredibly reassuring, as a quiet kid who was a bit of a bookworm. I was also neurodivergent and related to her in that way too, feeling like everyone simultaneously had too many expectations for me and not enough people rooting for me. And this musical perfectly captured that feeling for me once again. I cried basically the entire musical because of this.

I've been watching Matilda this morning and am about to turn it off, because right now I'm crying over here recalling the trauma of my own childhood and burying myself in stories to disassociate from real life. ETA: which says something about the acting skills of Alisha Weir, who plays Matilda, and how well she's done with this role. My daughter and I saw a stage production of Matilda not too long ago and it did not have the same effect on me at all.

Same, and he discovered Tim Minchin at the same time I did! He has such a good balance of humor and seriousness that is extremely rare. Like the song, "You Grew on Me" and "White Wine in the Sun" both made me chuckle at first, but by the end of those two songs, I was in a puddle of tears. "Not Perfect" is also quite beautiful.

I saw the movie in cinema here in the UK. It will not be on netflix in the UK till this summer. Also, netflix often does limited releases of some of their films in cinemas (most indie cinemas) prior to dropping on netflix for PR/Word of Mouth as well as eligibility for award season. When I worked at an indie cinema in the states, we got lots of netflix movies for one week runs prior to dropping on netflix. This included Don't Look Up, Tick Tick Boom, and Glass Onion. We also got lots of netflix movies super early for our film festival, mainly title that netflix was promoting for awards.

Sadly it's no longer playing in NYC but the original London production is still going strong if Garrick is interested on flying overseas to see it (also, as a theatre nerd, I'm so happy and thrilled that we finally found a musical movie that Garrick really enjoyed)! Definitely check out the stage show if you can b/c they do some truly magical stuff on a stage (10 years on and I'm still trying to figure out how they did the chalk scene) - super thrilled you all enjoyed the movie and the music... so glad that Tim Minchin is being recognized for his musical genius in Matilda! :D
