I wish all piggy’s had a home like this! We rescue pigs, hammys, any small animals that we have space for at the time. Glad the awful pet shop hutches/cages there are cruel and completely inappropriate were highlighted, sadly most owners are completely unaware.

Good question! Not to worry, the guinea pigs are secured indoors when the zoo is closed and during the day there are so many keepers and visitors around that birds of prey are not a risk! We have lots of open-top small mammal exhibits and have never had any issues. Thanks for watching!

Oh top tip, put a 6" board across the door, just in case a Guinea-pig makes their escape as you walk in. Just remember to step over it yourselves! ha ha

It looks AMAZING! One thing I'd consider changing in the future - so all the wooden buildings do not get damaged from water at the bottom - give them a raised bedding- perhaps on some half bricks to shield from the ground? Also, knowing full well piggies will love to sit inside- maybe a straw floor to keep them mud free?

Guinea Pigs are all unique, endearing, and social individuals. Many people don't know they are as friendly and affectionate as dogs, experts at observing patterns, and very talkative with their bodies and voices, if you understand what they are saying. And when you respond correctly, and they see they are actually communicating to you, they open right up. They are, truly, little people in furry coats. I take in unwanted pigs and give them a home in indoor enclosures on the ground floor of my house. They all have little bells to ring to summon me for food or play, and I always answer. Here's a video of the guy that started that all, many years ago. They all learned from him, and then those he taught when he passed on. The video is a little weird because he is confused. I have responded to his ring, but instead of placing lettuce at his feet as expected, I am holding a rectangle, so he rings again. But here you go. Rest in peace little fella. Superb!!! 👏👏 The Guinea Pigs are Beautiful 😍 I have four and yes, they need lots of looking after, and I never begrudge a single minute. I love my Furry Family and would walk over hot-coals in bare feet for them 😍 Looking forward to seeing lots more. Fantastic work 👏 👍

Seeing this brought tears of joy to my eyes. This is something I would love to do if I had the resources. I have 9 of my own (3 herds), in what I have labeled Cavy Acres. All but one were rescues or surrenders. I have been fortunate in being able to provide care to so many, but I just don't have enough resources for any more. As a gardener their poos and used wood bedding are wonderful for composting and feeding all my gardens. Sadly in the US near me there are really no exclusive guinea pig rescues. Awesome Job!!!!

I think this is a great idea, but do you guys plan on putting a net over the guinea pig town? The reason I ask this is because birds of prey could just move down and grab one 😢 hopefully this kind of thing does not happen if they are well watched.

Thank you for watching! In our later guinea pig town tour video, we chat about the predator risks which are very low and there is so many staff/visitors around that there is no risk to the Guinea pigs. They get locked into the shed at nighttime nice and safe 🥰

What an amazing environment for the piggies ❤ I adopted both my Guinea pigs from Gertie’s - they are the sweetest, gentlest, cuddliest piggies. Such a fantastic charity with so much experience. So glad that you have worked together to create this amazing enclosure and spread awareness

Lost our sweetest little guinea pig back in September and donated his leftover princely pile of spoils to Gertie's Guinea Pig rescue (we're planning to immigrate and couldn't adopt any more piggles until the move). Visited the Zoo back in February after hearing about the guinea pig village hoping to see some again - imagine our surprise catching this video of the work completion and the sponsor! (I hope you remember us, Gertie!) Warms my heart! Fabulous job you've all done, Hog Springs looks AMAZING! ❤Glad there's more education about keeping guinea pigs - especially regarding the small cage sizes. Pet stores should be held legally accountable. Those guinea pigs are so lucky to have such a good life ahead of them now. We'll definitely be back, so break out the guinea pig merchandise to go with our Capybara plush we picked up while last there - their close relative! 😍

I just had 1 question…how are they protected from predators? I’d like to also see content on that bc I didn’t see any netting over top to protect them from birds of prey and did they put anything underground to protect from snakes or rats? I know it’s a zoo but other animals do get in. My local zoo I see cottontails, squirrels, ducks etc roaming the grounds

Great question! We have a lot of open-top exhibits with small mammals in and no issues with natural predators. The guinea pigs only have access outside during the day when public and keepers are around so there are no risks! Their house has a solid concrete base so it is rodent-proof 😎 thank you for caring 🙏🏻

There is one male and the rest are female. The male is castrated because we don’t want mountains of babies and these are all rescues anyways, no need to breed them!

Good question! Not to worry, the guinea pigs are secured indoors when the zoo is closed and during the day there are so many keepers and visitors around that birds of prey are not a risk! We have lots of open-top small mammal exhibits and have never had any issues. The residents of hog springs are also treated to an indoor heater in their house. They will be truly spoiled and we are under the careful guidance of Gertie’s Guinea Pig Rescue. Thanks for watching!

Hey Fit’z! We have considered this and as the guinea pigs get locked in ‘The Pig Inn’ overnight and there are so many visitors/keepers around during the day, we believe the risk is very low. They have a kangaroo with boxing gloves that patrols the outskirts of the Guinea pig town, and gently punches any birds that try to snatch the pigs.
