You are my favorite kind of artist / guitar player. You do so much with so little. Anything that was unnecessary or could've been thrown in there simply to impress me with technique was thrown away. And when you're a really talented musician, like yourself, that's hard to do. Because you have so much at your disposal and you have decided to dispense with the smoke and mirrors and trust yourself with fewest variables that will still allow you to create these beautiful moments. I'm always so impressed with you and how you choose to create with the guitar.

I've just started learning slide the past few weeks. Interesting that you say the high E is a risky string for slide. Most of my other guitar instructors (books, etc.) say it's the easiest string to use. I have to say (again, just a few weeks into slide), I agree with you more than with those other dudes. No wonder I subscribed to your channel. You challenge conventional wisdom, and you do it from a place of understanding, not of snark. Love your work, Eric.

@@rtxf True. I've discovered I have a fairly heavy picking hand (I usually play fingerstyle, but when I strum in my cover band, I have to really dial it back to play the more delicate parts), and I think I have a fairly heavy "slide finger" as well. I'm discovering how much pressure I can apply before I get fret knock with the slide now. The high E string is starting to get less risky as my technique improves.

something that's always helped me for minor chords when playing slide in standard is to use the dgb strings just like you do, but to imagine an "e minor" shaped bar chord and either use just the g&b strings or using dgb to get the m7 as well. i think it can often sound nice to have the m3 (and even m7) in there instead of the more power-chordy way you approach it here, and it's definitely nice to have the option for both!

Most of the time I watch your videos and conclude this lesson made sense to me, I know how I'd like to apply it, and I can use this right now with something. I never dislike a video, but in extremely rare cases, I feel like what you taught is not something I understand or need at the moment. Somewhere in between those two responses in terms of frequency, closer to the former, is a third reaction: This is exactly what I needed right this second for something very important that I'm doing today. This video was that very scenario as I was listening to rehearsal versions of a song I will begin recording next week for my first ever album. There's a short bridge at the end that needed something else to add a bit of oomph. There's a strumming acoustic guitar and tremolo dripping telecaster playing chords and arpeggios already. This section has just 3 chords that I can play slide over for that little something extra it needs. Thank you so much, Eric!

If there are any other women or folks with small fingers looking for a slide that won’t lock up your whole pinky, Rock Slides in Spokane, WA makes very small slides in glass and brass. Alternatively, slice a bit of your dish sponge off and fit it into the slide with your finger to get a tight fit so it doesn’t slide past your knuckle.
