So sorry to hear of the loss of your friend and thanks for sharing your memories of him. It brought tears to my eyes. My best wishes to you and his other friends as well as his family. Rest in Peace Sammy ❤ Hopefully the business will continue to reflect his values. I once worked for a national retailer that upon losing one of it's founders quickly lost it's way and ended up being sold a few years later for the rest of the shareholders to make a profit. The people of the cities they served lost a partner and just had another store that was there to sell things.

My 15-year-old daughter is fortunate enough to have multiple guitars thanks to my interest in gear acquisition. I don’t play so I just buy her all the stuff that I would buy if I did play. She has several guitars that are $1500-$2000 that she absolutely loves. She also has a couple of used $150 guitars that I bought her that she absolutely loves. It’s funny when you see somebody who doesn’t really care about the price tag or understand any of the electronics behind the gear using an instrument and being happy with it because it sounds different than the other ones.

This is, I think, the first time I've made comment on any of your videos, Mr Mcknight, and I want to say that what you said/shared about pickups in the segment 07:15 was informative and interesting. I clicked with how you explained the "recipe" and such and want to thank you. As a professional (bar bands, not much recording) vocalist/rhythm guitar player and occasional repair person, you explanation is hugely helpful and useful. I don't expect you will ever se this note but, well, thanks. Oh, and thanks so much for providing time stamps! Very cool of you and greatly appreciated. You give good video!

Sorry for your loss 😿 Regarding prices; £2k is currently the max I’d pay for any guitar where CNC is used. For slightly over that level I can get a handmade custom guitar from a incredible local luthier. I don’t consider resale when buying a guitar and have a background in marketing.

If people knew how crappy the final product is with Fender these days they would never buy one. My American Pro ll has at least 6 high frets, sprout, chipping on edge of fretboard, and the worst setup I've ever seen. I've never even seen a Squier that was this bad but this is consistent with every Fender I've owned. In the end I did all the work myself and turned it into the guitar it should be.

I would just buy a used one it's a great guitar with a chunkier than usual neck and good pickups. You may get a good one that doesn't need any work and if you need to level it it's easy as heck to do yourself if you're willing to spend a few hours on it.@@ReyCarmesi666

Kelly Norris of “Music City”, in Springfield, MO., from the early 1990’s, helped me like that. I’d been playing 10yrs by then but I was getting into the “semi-professional”, and gigging aspect of the business and Kelly ALWAYS gave me the right advice & was always HONEST with me! His brother “Sid Norris”, took over the business & got into drugs and ultimately killed “Music City”, but Kelly Norris was so honest about Amps, strings, picks, guitars both Acoustic & Electrics. Every aspect of the business, chords, amps, mic’s, etc., Kelly always was straight up with me. He became a mentor to me & we actually became close enough that he began inviting me to his home for “private parties”, like with Nuno Bettencourt coving over. Yeah, it was awesome! I so miss Kelly Norris but several years back I saw him in a restaurant in Springfield eating with a woman & I almost died as he’d cut off all his long blonde head banging hair, he was even wearing a suit & tie!? I guess we all eventually have to move on & God forbid “grow up”, sometime? I’ll never forget my days & nights spent at Music City with Kelly Norris. (Thinking back there was a guy named “Brent”, that was a designer for an up & coming guitar called “Wilder”. Anyone remember or know of them?)

Hey Phil, we don't have to speculate about the cost of a Fender USA Custom Shop Mike McCready, they've already done it, came out a couple years ago. It is masterbuilt, not team built, but $15k was the price.

Fun fact: I've been watching KZbin since the early days.I NEVER had any clue about 'Guitar KZbin' being a thing. Somehow I stumbled upon Anderton's around 2016 or so and then KZbin started recommending your videos to me. I watched a couple of your videos but never subscribed and then one day on an Anderton's video Chappers, in the context of the video, said something like, "If this is the sort of thing you are interested in, you should be subscribed to "Know Your Gear with Phil McKnight". So I did and THEN I found out that you were from PHX and it has been all down hill ever since-in the best possible way. Because of Anderton's I started watching you regularly (and then many others) and suddenly started collecting guitars and learning about DIY stuff and now I have the knowledge and interest in pursuing so many other things in guitar and music in general. I now tell people that my 'retirement job' will be buying and selling, working-on, and building guitars. Literally you and Anderton's made a huge positive impact on my life that I never saw coming.

Hey Patrickz2976, Gfs pickups are great. I had a Viking II. The electronics were horrible. Gfs to the rescue. Swapped pups, pots and everything else for relatively cheap and I mean inexpensive. Amazing tone now. Could not be happier. Took a muddy sounding guitar to on par with my 335 custom. I was blown away.

Great topics here, Phil! Firstly, I wish the Sam Ash Family and Crew the best for the future. Secondly, I would NEVER pay $1899 for ANY new OTC guitar; but MIM is/has been @ the top for modern builds (p/point an added bonus!). Thirdly, I had a real '62 J/M that had that problem, but my MIM J/M Vintera doesn't (fairly identical components between the two). Neck must be straight. Trem properly set up. 9's in E-Std. are then stable, and thin enough to stay in place!

Fender McCready MIM is course overpriced for a MIM Strat but for a vintage reissue and relic'd strat, you can't get anything close to this quality for the price. Love the guitar, it feels every bit as good as my Am Pro II Strat. I have also had many QC issues with MIA Fenders made 2022/2023 and this MIM was perfect out of the box. Got a good deal from an awesome authorized Fender dealer on the McCready strat (K&S Music Center, Williamsport PA.)

Regarding the inlays, for me it depends on the guitar. I like dots on some guitars but like other inlays on other guitars. PRS guitars look good with either dots or birds. But I prefer Gibson’s with trapezoid inlays. I don’t like the look of a Les Paul or SG with dots, it looks cheap. The same with zebra pickups, they look cheap. I don’t have any rational about that, other than my perception. Just my thoughts. Thanks for doing what you do, Phil!

I’d been in Ontario & Minnesota then back home and over to Nashville, then back home & had to have back surgery & I had my “buying instruments during my Convalescence”. 😆I actually ordered a “Custom”, Dobro from Mark Thibault of Rayco Resophonics. Still own it today! It became my “Stage Dobro”, only. I’d use my Gibson “Jerry Douglas”, model in blonde mahogany sometimes but practiced with my Beard Reso that was a low level but had great booming volume for a Dobro which is important as the “Dobro”, is facing upward & a lot of sound is lost going straight up.

@Thismachinekillsfacists - for the guy looking for a 2004 guitar for his grand daughter - I would look into the Washburn Dime 333 - Dimebag Darrell signature model. This was the last year Washburn made these guitars - as they would go back to Dean shortly after up until recently. They are about as pointy as a metal guitar can be, and they will hold their value well as the Washburn contract ended in 2004, just weeks before Dimebags untimely death.

Thank you so much Phil. The PAF sound was what leaning to as my Les Paul paf have more to my playing. Now you helped me get my first SG 65 cherry faded. Stop bar, mainly play my studio Marshall plexi head and 2 # 12inch marshal cab the England hand wired version. A fender 65 deluxe reverb. And 1 limited edition number 7 of 320 White Orange amp with 2 12 inch combo. Part my veterans pension comes with lower back busted neck same and the broken brain black dog. Just me now and service dog trooper my golden retriever service dog. As wife lasted 14.5 yrs and 2 great kids when I was at bottom, played around on ,me and then left . So I’m often binging KYG shows start to finish. I’d love to have a beer with ya mate one day. As we must be close age wise I can talk guitars till paint peels of the walls. As all I have now is play guitar or take some photos. Love my guitars both electric and acoustic. Cole Clark fat lady raw plays great. Yet want save for either Martin, Taylor or Maton Aussie guitar messiah really nice guitar to play. I’ve still got my Ibanez player series acoustic bought in 91. Wow has the wood given its tone nice. Yet blues old school rock as I’m old school soldier. Sorry I’ve missed 2 weeks as I get show 0800 sat mornings. The big weather change was ful on rain and dark which made me think it was really early as only sleep approx 2hrs 15min average a night. So laid in your show helps me out a lot. As feel around familiar people and you get me to laugh. As I pick up many little bits for us old school people. Yet a few cold ones and I think we would end up having a good few hrs. Between guitars amps and old army stories I could see a good time. I know I didn’t get the snark recharge first time I won something and I couldn’t even get it due to postage to Australia. Need to still grab one as need a clip on as day you said I’d won for helping with a volume pedal for a member. But that’s life I guess. Love this show out of all the channels might watch little bits on gear yet start to end and thumbs up when I’m watching KYG. Washed counted up my 5-6 KYG shirts and one coffee mug, today my handle broke accident fell into sink. Really crappy start missed show busted mug which loved the handle as could fit my hand not just 3 fingers. Noted your good sized big mug or maybe it was KZbin still love that bloody hat but mate. Thanks for advice JB Humbucker Seymour I think sit with the custom shop fat 50’s in the USA standard Strat HSS. Maybe later swap over the 2 single coils for something different again. Hi to Mrs Phil your better half lol. Stay strong Matt n trooper. I’d like to send picture of couple of 5 guitars I made from scratch but bought neck rest all hand done yet the trick no paint but I think you’ll like the colours. Special way I built them all built bought by real job players not one came for 6 months check. They told me no need really great response. Yet didn’t make self one as one person one guitar, tools parts from stew to Australia they looked after me. Finding nitro was hardest thing. No stickers had a wax brass stamp made overseas. So heat up on stove and branded the wood. Signed and dated inside shaped to person with cuts and pick ups went listened to them play. Then did electrics. Never built one as all built on a guitar box over the arms of ,y recliner sitting in stool. Picts taken just people couldn’t believe what they received was done in lounge room on a box. Which died on last as soldering iron and cardboard not good mix. Sorry it’s long one but thanks mate again for answering me. Be there this sat morning coming for live show. 🦮🫡🇦🇺🪖 🎸 aka Grumpy Digger don’t know what happened. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

That colour is great all the bits I’d like on your version. Just had to ask sorry missed cpl lives in row. But my mother passed away and a sudden thing. Just me and trooper service dog and a very lost confused veteran pensioner trying to do without help. Member only show with your wife I really enjoyed you having her on again. I love when people don't bother checking their info and then just spread it around; the MIM McCready is NOT limited to 100 pieces. I've seen serial numbers in the 400s being sold by flippers on Reverb, and the first MIM run is rumored to have been 500, and preorders for more to be delivered late 23/early 24 are still being taken. As for a USA McCready, there were 60 at $15k per, currently reselling for $25k. The Road Worn MIM Cobain Jags from 2011-2014 were $1200, were CS quality, and blow the McCready relicking out of the water.

Phil you're spot on about the Mike Mccready strat, if he's your guy, that's your band, or you're looking for a relic'd strat, then that's a solid guitar to purchase. I have one and the relic job is fantastic, the neck is great and pups sound really good. I'm not sure if it's limited run, I heard the initial run was 500 and they are backordered through March 2024 now. They did make a USA custom shop in 2020 or 2021, they're stupid expensive now. For the mexican price (which Musicians friend ran them at 10% off) quality is great, I'd say it's as close to a Mexico custom shop as there is.

What should the resistance be of an Epiphone Les Paul 1960’s “Standard”, pick-ups be? Mine has arched Maple top in “Bourbon Burst”. I love the guitar even though I re-wired the switch & upgraded the wiring to 16-gauge & a new switch as the factory switch broke the know during shipping & Sweetwater sent me a quality “Switchcraft”, to replace it. I think the wire from the factory was like 20-24 gauge wire. VERY THIN! I upgraded some of the jumper wires while I was in there & had it apart & I copper taped the sides. I wasn’t sure if they’d used metal in the paint so I just put in the copper tape but it’s still hissing! Darn it!

It was noting to look at a “Plain Jane”, model for $2k-$3k, like a Charvel, or Jackson. A Richenbacher or B.C. Rich? At least $5k & higher! A “Golden Falcon”, Gretsch, was at least $3k & that maybe even was “used”, price.

The bridges on the classic vibe Jazzmasters are not terrible. The solution is almost always shimming the neck to raise the bridge height for greater break angle on the bridge.

ive been playing jaguars for 25 years religiously, a Floyd deff will not work to cover a jags trem hole, you would have to patch the jags trem hole then rout for the Floyd. you normally have to shim jaguars neck to get them to play at they're best so neck wise without a shim you would probably be great as far as neck angle. id order a body from Warmoth minus the trem in fact Warmoth will cut the body for a Floyd if you want. I play 9s and 10s on my jags and tune them a whole step down for 1 band and standard for the other my jags play ultra stable. im going to be making a video about stabilizing the jazzmaster , jaguar and mustang with parts you can currently buy at ace hardware, like the bushing that fender includes now and sell for like 12 dollars a pair can be bought t ace for like 39 cents each. i dont do a youtube channel i was just gonna make the video because so many players are having issues with jaguars being how popular the squires have become. heck Phil if you ever wanted to do a offset video ill bring over my 63 and 64 jaguars and my 65 mustang i could share any knowledge i have and then you could make the video. im sure your to busy but if you ever want to i have the guitars ( this is jonny from sound sounds i gave you the mk2 pedal at the the Roberto vin swapmeet)

$1899 USD for the MIM McCready? Be happy it's that cheap for you! In Canada it retails is $2760 CAD which after factoring the exchange rate, is still almost $150 USD more in Canada! Plus 13% tax in the province where I live which makes it $3118.79 CAD out the door!! Then again the EVH striped original replica, another MIM Fender is the relatively the same price up here!

I've never thought fender, Gibson, prs worth what they ask. At the same time I have friends who swear by those brands and willing to pay. I agree, if it's worth it to you go for it.

Fender has been doing the 1600-2k “affordable” signature model for at least a few years now, would love to hear what the outcome has been. Have had my MIM P bass and tele for 20 years and love them, but for what I paid for them I would be getting a Squier today. Sounds like it’d be a great Squier, but tbh that just makes me more bummed about Fender being no different then Gibson at this point. Given their instruments were designed to be affordable and accessible, it feels extra wrong and very non-Leo Fender. The guy whose name and rep mattered in the first place. Especially given my HB and Firefly feel like they’ll last just as long and play/hold tune just the same with upgrades that total still well under the og players MIM (which I’ve also modded bc they were only solid as base models and not all that, totally fine but not different from the cheaper guitars). Doesn’t sound like they care about players buying their instruments. Must have more then enough collectors still buying. I also keep my clip on tuner on my headstock for shows now, they need one that can handle the blinding high noon sun but otherwise so easy and non obtrusive can’t imagine not at this point!

I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan, but I'm not really interested in the McCready strat. Visually I connect that strat with Mike, but for tone, Mike plays a bunch of guitars, and I never felt that one PJ song was linked to the guitar. He didn't get this strat until '92 and their most 'strat' sounding song Yellow Ledbetter recorded in '91, so this guitar wasn't even used on the track. The only other song where Mike's guitar is solo and really stands out is Present Tense and he plays various Gibsons for it live. There isn't much unique about his signature guitar, it's a normal (now vintage) strat with normal pickups for the year. With EVH, Gilmour, those type of guys their guitars they customized them. I would like this guitar as a fan, but sonically for the price I could just buy one of the countless 1960's reissues Fender puts out.

Mr. Philip, I think you are a very funny guy. When you talk you might not realize it, but you make me laugh like shit man. And I want to tell you that Sam was right ,even though I know you know that. I can tell it choked you up a bit. That’s not a bad thing brother. Got great advice from a great guy that I don’t even know. And what’s more ,gave him the respect in death that you should have. You’re a classy, fucking dude man. Don’t ever let anybody tell you any different. I say this from a unique perspective, because I am an artist in both sense of the word that I know. And that is I am an oil painter on canvas, I’m a guitarist, I play harmonica, drums, bass, I sing I write my own songs. Were they be Christian or secular. You are one of the three best guys that I know of that I continue to watch now. And you’re like a jolly old soul. you make me laugh and I even choked up about your Sam Ash comment. Because I’ve known people like him in the past long since left this world and that was really some heartfelt amazing soul. Things that you’ve said about the man. And, how he, Sam has changed your outlook on things. I believe wasn’t for that connection you had with that dude, you probably wouldn’t be where you are today. God bless say a prayer for the man. God bless his soul. I’ll do the same thing myself and I have never met the man, but based on you and the way you are, that gives me confidence and young folks these days. If there were more people like you, this would be a better plan and Brother). So God bless have a great day from me to mine. I see thank you for the things that you’ve already introduced me to, because in the process of becoming a luthier. I like to know my gear more than I ever have. My gives me something to think about when I do my next door painting. Who knows when I finally get everything fixed in the house where everything supposed to be and I can get back to painting again, maybe I’ll come up with something just for you. Send it to you just because. Nobody needs a reason for everything but everything needs a reason . and that my friend is HAL we not only get better in life but we help those around us who also get better in life. And before you know it there’s gonna be some young guy when you’re in your 60s or 70s and you’re going to give them a beautiful blessing of knowledge and they’re going to say the same thing about you. What a guy he is what a great guy he was what a great human being to have on this planet to make it just a little bit more tolerable for everybody else. And by no means my brother is that a bad thing. That’s good no matter how you look at it. You’re one of the more decent human beings I’ve ever seen on any of these shows that I do watch . and I’m glad you shared that about Sam because that just shows me personally the fact that you are not selfish and kept it to yourself but instead you put it out there for everybody else to gleam some kind of real humanity and loyalty not just to the people around you, but the people that watch you and listen to what you have to say. Because what you have to say is important. Thank you for sharing that. I don’t know about anybody else but if that didn’t grab onto a heart string somewhere, you’re just not human. Like I always say, watch your six, keep your head on a swivel , and watch out for those idiots that think they rule everything but they’re really looking out just for themselves. God bless you brother. I’m gonna get back to watching your video.

Response at 44:15...Bottom line is, it's all corporate greed. Look, I love Fender guitars but IMO, Fender and all other major guitar companies have lost their way. By that I mean, look at firefly guitars... they are selling a relic or non relic strat style guitar with Locking tuners, Custom strap buttons, Roasted maple neck, Stainless steel frets, Alnico 5 pickups and a Roasted ash body for $179.00 (mine cost $139.00 plus shipping during the holidays). I don't really care much for C necks but these guitars (and I bought 2) look good, feel good and sound good. For the money you just can't beat them. So why oh why would anyone waste their hard earned money on these Fender strats coming out of Mexico for almost $2000.00 with tax? It just seems insane to me! Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.

I have a Hamer XT SATF (Indonesia) that I bought off of hellomusic in 2012 for $172 (after a $25 coupon). I always thought that I "should" change the pickups, but haven't gotten around to it. If you yell into them from an inch away you can hear it, but who ever yells into their pickups? When I crank up my soldano astroverb it sounds just like John Sykes/Alex Lifeson/Chris Degarmo etc. etc. It's the amp that matters. Do the people who buy $10,000 or $2,000 MIM signature guitars not realize that the person the guitar is named after used a plain 'ol standard version of that guitar (or even a super cheap import guitar when they first got their success)? Why not create your OWN signature guitar from Warmoth parts, built to your specs to meet your needs instead of endlessly worshiping these guitar Gods that you only like because they show you the talent and the gold and a possible future that exists INSIDE YOU if you eliminated distractions (like internet) and focused on YOUR music? Why do so many believe that greatness is outside them and not to be found inside them? Also, thanks to inflation, it looks to me like guitars are selling for DIRT CHEAP on ebay.

From Leo: Sweetwater selling odd stock under the name gearnutz is no problem. Lots of corporations have multiple companies. There is no deception. All stores are just resellers anyway. You pay your money, you get your product. Who cares what name is on the receipt? Multiple outlets are not any issue. KDH is too busy trying to make a story where there is not one.
