something that bugs me off a lot about the guy, aside from everything that is already said in this video, is the way he acted towards all the legitimate top players. he kept consistently 1-upping them with fake accomplishments and acting cocky about it. and when he was caught almost everyone felt a boost on motivation to grind the game again since there could be actual competition now

Great recap on the situation! This situation is weird 'cause every one of schmooey's faked accomplishments are definitely 100% possible given someone tries hard enough. Myself and many other players have taken this as an opportunity to replicate his clips for real, and it's made playing the game much more fun as of late.

The worst thing is that this guy is actually incredibly talented at this game, and could get most, if not all of his faked achievements legitemately if he would put enough time into grinding them. But he chose the easier way out. And once he realized that it could pass unnoticed, he saved so much time being led astray by his greed.

In many ways cheating at the top competitive level is less about replacing skill and more as a substitute for impatience and frustration, someone knowing they are skilled enough they "could" get a time, but coming up short so much they begin to feel entitled as a good player to tip the scale in their favor.

This isn't even limited to speedrunning. Consider how many major league baseball players have been caught using steroids, and then think about how many times you've heard of a minor league baseball player using steroids. The people at the top are often more susceptible to the temptation to cheat than the ones lower down.

Excellent video covering this situation. In hindsight Schmooey having a monopoly on accomplishments was very unhealthy for the scene, but since his exposure it seems everyone has a newfound motivation to get better now that the current skill ceiling is a lot more reasonable, and a lot of players are more goated than they realized. We're gonna be much stronger overall as a result of this, the future is looking good for us

Yeah, I see hardly anyone talking about how he mentally affected so many. How he took tons of channel growth and with that financial growth of some people away as well, especially frif who really needed all eyes on him that he could get at the time. But the man still despite all that went and uploaded Spacerace content to get all the attention back. Ian who's been told he's second evering everything Schmooey's ever done, just cause Schmooey always sniped him, even though those were fake. Or Entropy being talked about how he makes faked clips, when that's not at all true. His cocky and terrible attitude and need for constant attention and reevaluation was something horrible that affected many mentally and demotivated TONS of people. I feel like that's a part hardly anyone talks about but I feel bad for those people he targeted. It is absolutely sad and goes way beyond a casual snipe anymore.

Then again, we see the exact same patterns with nearly every single cheater... Deny that you're cheating, admit a small portion as a compromise, realize the accusations won't stop, (optionally blame the moderators for overreacting) admit more, get caught completely, make an apology video where you blame childhood trauma, skip over the actual lies and issues such as being so toxic to others in the community by bragging how much better you are than they are and then expect forgiveness... Fascinating how nearly all follow the same path, nearly all show clear signs of narcissism and nearly all abuse the trust and friendship of those around them to reach that point.
@wolfumz
@wolfumz 2 жыл бұрын
@@someguy4915 yeah. I think, similar to other issues (like, say, drug abuse) people end up cheating for a variety of reasons, and there are many different types of personalities and situations that end up cheating (or addicted). There is no single profile for all cheaters. I think there are a slice of cheaters, maybe Schmooey included, where it's possible for them to make amends and move on without cheating again. It's definitely super common to see the Billy Mitchell archetype (absolute denial, burning friends and allies, almost delusional, some amount of charisma and charm), or the other common archetype of cheater which you describe (admit to some small transgression or innocent mistake which invalidates a single run or something, get caught cheating again, then blame some unconnected issue like a mental health condition or stress...). I have my doubts for these kind of cheaters, that they can be trusted to play honestly in the future. They rarely admit to what they did, or try to make amends. One of the benefits of these people is that the community tends to respond by implementing standards that make it harder to cheat, meaning future records are more reliably legit. People are often make the decision to cheat based on whether or not they think they will get caught.

often top runners get frustrated with trying to reach a new goal, that they feel like should be reachable for them, but yet it doesn't get reached for so long. Most in this case don't cheat ofc, but some may slip and in peak of frustration decide to cheat it away. If they don't stop themselves, and they manage to get at least one cheated run on the leaderboard and not get caught - then they may feel bad, but also they will know that cheating is an option, and it becomes mentally easier to repeat the process again. And it's unlikely that they will come clean after such a bad thing they've done. All it can really take is one slip of judgement, and then it would all go downhill. Trackmania cheating scandal was quite a remarkable show of how one uncaught cheating top runner may cause others to cheat as well, including many well meaning people that just got frustrated and suspicious of said top runner, and that lead them to the path of cheating back their top spots.

Sucks that a good player would cheat. Likely nobody would ever trust one of his runs again without a metric crap ton of scrutiny, and even then there'll be doubts in their minds. First Riolu in Trackmania community, now Schmooey in Guitar Hero. The saddest thing is that most of the records will eventually get beaten legitimately, but the reputation of these otherwise quite nice people will always be gone and their lives partitialy destroyed. This video highlights some pretty bad cheating that's honestly pretty shameful to have done, but when Abyssoft talks about Cheat Engine i honestly laughed out loud. The audacity of using something called *Cheat Engine* and claiming not to have done anything is pretty hilarious.

To be fair, Cheat Engine can be good for practice. I run a game where there's no native way to speed up the gameplay, and it can be used to manipulate RNG for tests/routing, which has come in handy for me. In this case, it shouldn't have been necessary since there's a native way to slow down and practice as Abyssoft says, but it is actually useful in other games, and legitimate speedrunners do use it too.
@RichterVonFuchs
@RichterVonFuchs 2 жыл бұрын
Also to note having cheat engine in itself does not inheritably mean they were cheating. It does in this case of course but for example seeing cheat engine on the desktop of someone who speedruns can appear damming. However they could also be figuring out how the game works so they can create auto splitters or load removers. Or using cheats to theory craft tricks or routes.

@@RichterVonFuchs it's also used by modders to find addresses (like in with translation patches for doujin games) and by data hunters to, well, find unused data! Honestly it's gone way farther than "simply" gameshark/action replay for PC

Cheat Engine is a Memory viewing and manipulation tool. It is designed to be a cheat tool that lets you modify things like lives, health, game speed... etc... but since its initial development has grown to be so much more. It uses can range from cheating in a game, data mining for auto splitters, reverse engineering software, Q&A stress testing and much much more. The name has stuck and hence when its heard about or seen due to its name its "instant proof" but that is not the case. Having cheat engine on his PC wouldn't necessarily mean anything without the evidence of slow downs being used to link the two. So in this instance yes its funny that they actually used Cheat Engine to cheat and then try to deny it, but its just not a clear cut case of "Cheat Engine" = Cheater.

To be fair Cheat Engine has a lot of legitimate uses as well. I used to speedrun DS1 (don't worry, I'm garbage, lmao) and for a while the run I was practicing was all about getting a specific weapon to drop (Black Knight Halberd). It's only like a 15% or so chance to drop from one black knight early-ish in the run, so if you were grinding for WR you would just reset if it didn't drop. However, for practice most speedrunners would just use cheat engine to force spawn it if it didn't drop so they could at least practice the run.

Honestly, if you decide to give someone money for an achievement, you have an obligation to at least have some standard to follow so as not to be unfair and also not to be cheated. The fact that the guy managed to get money with such lazy fraud is pathetic and says more about who is giving money than who is receiving. You can be sure that Schmooey was thinking everytime "cool, I'll make more easy money off these suckers".

@@makingadjustments The cheating was incredibly easy to miss..a few missed hand movements here and there. You'd actually have to go in and analyze it a couple frames at a time just to look for cheating which most aren't gonna do especially for someone they knew didn't cheat (or at least didn't start out cheating). Moderators only really hardcore look into submissions like this if they have reason to believe it's fake which they didn't at the time, if they looked into every submission with a toothpick and a comb they'd take ages just adding submissions to the board..which isn't ideal for the community. Don't blame the community for someone else's action..he shouldn't of been cheating, that's his fault., and most of the community isn't acting as moderators thus they aren't looking for proof of cheating..if you wanna blame ANYONE for him cheating so long blame him and the moderators who he FRIENDED to get away with it (you never assume your friends are doing messed up shit like cheating and stealing money).

While this guy is CLEARLY cheating, i'd like to point out that simply having cheat engine doesn't mean a player is cheating in general. There's a lot of games that don't have practice tools that cheat engine can be used to help out with and it can also be used to set up things like challenge runs or just make wacky things happen. I just want to point this out since both the name of the program and the way it was presented in the video make it seem like cheating is the ONLY thing its good for. It's always best to look at things case by case.

I dunno why the algorithm gave me this but its interesting content to be sure. Legit haven't seen GH since it was suuuuper popular when I was in high school. So a question people who still play the game might have an answer for - why aren't there new guitar heroes? This genre seems to have faded away, but it was a smash hit in its day. Seems to me like there'd be a market for next gen GH. I'd buy it for sure. In my high school we used to organize GH3 tournaments in the auditorium, projected onto the big screen. It was a boys school so damn near everybody was playing GH to some extent, and the tournaments we had after school were pretty big events for our school. Literally an auditorium half full of spectators cheering on the competitors, placing bets on the side, the whole nine yards. For about a year every party would have some GH being played. This is like 2011 or something. It was this glorious little moment where being good at GH would actually give you social cred and cause girls to take notice of you haha. Us nerds were in heaven. I don't get why some game publisher hasn't tried to resurrect that fad.
