The Police have such a great sound. A band ahead of its time as this was recorded in 1979. Sting wrote this song about a castaway who a year after sending out his message in a bottle and receiving no messages thinks he’s destined to live the rest of his life alone. However, the next day, he sees "a hundred billion bottles" on the shore, finding out that there are more people like him out there. The song worked on many levels, most people at some point in their life feel alone or even sent have sent out some type of S-O-S.
@ragnari9368
@ragnari9368 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the person is an actual castaway, it's just how he sees himself. The line "a hundred billion billion bottles on the shore" is him realising he is not alone, at least in his feeling of being a castaway. I have heard this song so many times, but this is the first time I really listened to the lyrics.

@s.mcpherson6354

@@ragnari9368 Yes, as an example, I've had refugee friends tell me about feeling alone because they didn't know anyone from their culture or village in their new city. And then they'd suddenly realize that they belonged to a huge group of other refugees who were from where they were, or other places, but what connected them was that they knew that place's refugee-to-citizenship experience. So it was possible for them to sometimes feel alone, until they 'sent out an SOS' text and got together with other people on the same path they were.

"Ahead of their time" is a comment I see frequently on KZbin and I'm curious to understand what it means. I was 15 when this came out and at that time the Police seemed to fit in perfectly with the popular music landscape of the time, in the UK at least - a bit of reggae, bit of pop, a bit of new wave attitude and they appealed to rockers like me as well.

Just an fyi, their drummer, Stewart Copeland is EXTREMELY highly regarded as one of the best drummers of all time. Hard to argue with it. Sting has worked with two world class drummers. Stewart Copeland, and Vinnie Colaiuta. And that "Island Vibe", was influenced by Rush's drummer Neil Peart. Stewart talked about it in this drumming documentary I saw on Netflix, which was pretty cool.

The Police got started in late 70's during Englands punk scene. They got their name because the drummer's father was in the CIA, stationed in Endland. Sting got his name because he used to wear a shirt that made him look like a bee. They have a raggae influence,

Love The Police. So many good tunes. Try Invisible Sun (fits in with your reaction to Bloody Sunday), Canary in a Coal Mine, The Bed’s Too Big Without You, etc. This song was performed by Sting at a charity concert for Amnesty International called “The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball” to support their work trying to get prisoners of conscience released through letter writing campaigns. I grew up in the 70s and 80s in Malibu, CA. Punk Rock had arrived on our glorious costal shores along with Ska Music and backed up with it's older bigger atoned brother from Jamaica and the Caribbean, Reggae Music, which are all prevalent and supported with Rock in this nautical themed Police cut. I graduated High School from Santa Monica High in 1986. "Synchronicity", the Police's Senior Class just so happened to coincide with my very own Senior year and graduation. The Police are, above and beyond, my number #1 favorite rock band of all time. Second place goes to my softer side and sentimental favorite, Tears for Fears. It's really true my friends, Everybody Wants to Rule the World!!!!!

This was a fun reaction. I could see the wheels turning in Brad's head as he had his analyst's hat on. It is certainly complex music. It wasn't until the last sixty seconds that you began to bob to the music. Lex, on the other hand, was "feeling" the music and enjoying the ride. You complement each other so well...

Brilliant band, just listen to those drums and guitar work. A very under appreciated band. They were so tight. Musically brilliant.

Stuart Copeland is one of the greatest drummers ever. His band - The Police. One brother’s talent agency: FBI. Other brother’s record company: IRS. Their dad was in the CIA.

We were so damned lucky to have this music. 60 years old here, so I got to listen to The Police, Fleetwood mac, Led Zeppelin and Moody Blues. Steely Dan and Alan Parsons. Yes, Supertramp, Heart, Jefferson Airplane/Starship. Even the Carpenters and Elvis. So many great songs we got to listen to. So many albums to explore. It is a great pleasure to watch "First Time Listen" reaction videos. Keep up the great work. Ken

In this episode of Brad & Lex, Sting stings the couch couple like a musical bee honey! Lex recognizes the juxtaposing rhythyms with claims of having to go on with different "bop" paces but like the sound surfer she is, Lex manages to ride the the sonic wave producing her "adjustable bop" as Brad being somewhat familiar with the famous track, sends us his nostalgia filled "side to side sway".

Wish they would watch the music videos, I understand they wanna see the captions to understand the lyrics but man the videos just put it all into context. Watching the music video and seeing Copeland on the drum kit is legendary. I love the chorus "Sending out an SOS to the world". Im so nostalgic for this song as a 34 y/o lol.
