i tried the glue trick but did not work very well. I found this video and tried it and could not believe how easy it was to remove the round seal with this method. I used 6 neaodymiun magnets together that I use on pickups and a hot air gun with small nozzle for about 10 seconds. Brilliant and thanks you.

i plugged in my soldering iron and balanced the tuning machine on top of it while it heated up. I kid you not, I walked back into the room and it fell onto the table and the cap popped right off all by itself! Heat is the trick!

Sweet... That's how you do it. I just came from a video where dude super glued a flat head machine screw to the back plate and pulled it off that way... Only one problem... There was now a screw attached to the back plate. Someone suggested he just leave a drywall screw on it and use it to hang the guitar on the wall. I was wondering if there was a way to dissolve the super glue (acetone or rubbing alcohol) when I decided to watch this video. It was actually the first suggested, but for some reason iI watched the super glue method first. The word for the super glue method is "crude". The word for this heat method is, I think, "elegant". I heated the tuners for about 10 seconds with a cheap heat gun and then pulled off the back plates with a small, but strong, refrigerator magnet. Worked like a charm and no messy clean up. So, thank you for the video.

Thanks Vic! I have a beautiful SEGOVIA F-07 GN, really well made. But the tuners all worked like they were full of gravel. I swapped them out for the tuners on a very cheap CLECA that worked effortlessly. So now I am opening the Segovia tuners thanks to you and lubricating them with Vaseline. Now I can RESWAP the Segovias back from the Cleca. Why in the world would the makers of a great Segovia install unlubricated tuners? NO ACCOUNTING FOR RETAIL GOOFUPS.

With the round rear cover of a tuner removed, you can lubricate the gears... put a tiny dab of light grease (gun grease or fishing reel grease) or even petroleum jelly with a toothpick and then re-close the tuner round plate. The button removes with a screw and 1or 2 small washers. Then you can gently push the shaft and lightly grease the opposite side shaft end to lubricate it. Reasseble the washers just as they were put on... not backwards.

Agreed - Correct advise Doug, thanks for that. I'll add to my description if that's OK? No Gun grease in the U.K for the masses as yet certainly not in ASDA (equivalent to WalMart in USA.)

I have a question, when ever you pop the cap back in, does it go in by pressure or did you use glue to place it back?

Thumb pressure will do it. To be sure use a Rubber/Hard Plastic mallet as seen in the video. NO GLUE required.

It's worth a try I guess. Make sure you completely dry the Cog & Spindle when putting back together. I would use lithium-based grease Blue or blue-green lithium-based greases are generally good for guitar tuners. Greases with added PTFE are even better.

Rick. You got the idea . . . Tighten the COG Wheel Screw if need be, then grease/lubricate. Place CAP on tuner tap firmly with soft end mallet. If the COG Teeth are damaged it's NEW TUNER time. It's hard to find spare cogs with matching teeth & ratio. Good luck. ViC

How was it better? The heat gun method only takes 10 seconds x 6 tuners equals a total of one minute. You, on the other hand, spent 5 minutes using the stove. So the stove method is slower, requires a bigger heat source, expends more energy. That's not my idea of better. Is it different? Yes. But better? No.
