WOW!!!! PLEASE dissect more KISS songs. I'm a 55 year old somewhat intermediate guitarist and I absolutely love what I have discovered. You are pulling the curtain back from one of my ALL TIME favorite bands. ((if you could only have seen my bedroom in the 70's, wall to wall Kiss posters)) THANK YOU for this!

Ace was and still is a class of it's own. He invented that style of playing. Tommy Thayer is hired to mimic that and he does it well. Eric on the other hand is not a stand in for Peter Criss or even the late Eric Carr. Both Carr and Singer outperform Peter in every aspect. And I've seen em all play live.

Liked this to make him see the comment! It is common for non KISS ARMY to not know the current lineup! I think he needs to do something from the late 70's/early 80's. and it just erks me that he is not right with any of the musicians he mentions for the most part. Peter nor Ace are even involved with this so he is giving credit to the wrong people. And I also find It interesting he keeps saying "larger than life" which is the name of a song from the original crew!

Kiss for all the "ugh they're still going on?" comments they've gotten over the past decades, were still super fun live till even some years back. effective simple rocking music. And also complete shift from the music you're reviewing here, but could you react to some Allan Holdsworth again? His song "City Nights" would be my recommendation or any song of his for that matter.

Great ears. In the 1990’s , I was at Six Flags in NJ. I saw Gene Simmons from about 10 yards away. He was carrying a toddler and with his family. An enthusiastic fan approached him and asked, “Are you Gene Simmons?” GS paused a second and said, “I am. (Pause) But not today.” It was polite but direct. Seeing the interaction, I just let him wander off.

I know someone already mentioned it, but this is not Peter on the drums and it is not Ace on guitar. The reason why the drums parts are played so well is because Eric Singer, who is playing the part of the Cat Man is 100 x's better than Peter in all aspects of being a player and a performer. Don't get me wrong I wish the Peter and Ace had stayed healthy and drug free and we're still in the band, but the musicianship is just much better now.

Not actually Ace and Peter. Stunt doubles. Shadows. Not actually KISS. KISS tribute band. But the best tribute band because it has two original members. There are no substitutes for Ace and Peter. Today’s KISS needs a real Dr. because it’s hemorrhaging. They slapped a tourniquet on the band but it barely stops the bleeding. No Ace and Peter? No KISS. KISS-lite. Like the sound at the end of ‘Detroit Rock City’...I hear a crash.

C'mon man - just 30 seconds of previous research would give you the current lineup: Eric Singer (now a 30 year association with the band) on drums. Tommy Thayer (26 years, 5 in mgmt, 21 as the Spaceman) on guitar. Kind of distracting for many of us. This is likely around 2004. While I loved the original lineup (saw them in '79 and '96), Ace and Peter just were not up to the rigors of the road. This lineup is the best live lineup they've ever had. Consistent. Sober. Strong. All stellar players.

Your comment/query about the lack of Superstar, Big-Boy bands could not have been more spot-on. That is EXACTLY to what Gene Simmons has alluded over the last few years whenever he states: "Rock is dead". That's not literal, but as figurative as it gets. The follow-up to each time he makes that statement typically is Gene running down a list of some of the all-time greatest bands/artists, all of the way up to about the late 80's or so. They're easy to rattle off, as there were an overwhelming PLETHORA of them; but he then poses the question: "who are those bands from the end of that period through today?" In essence, he's challenging anyone to name artists in that period who qualify placement in similar rarified air - and you'd be hard-pressed to name more than just a few. This form of entertainment is as viable today as it was when they started, nearly a half-century ago and, as you pointed out - they're necessary to the rock community. Those types of bands are indeed missing, today - and KISS are hanging it up after the culmination of this current tour (so glad I've been fortunate to see them numerous times over the decades). And while there are bands with "KISS D.N.A." in their shows, no one - and I mean NO ONE does a show as big and as great as KISS...and no one ever will, again. I assume you now know that Peter Criss isn't playing drums. Eric Singer has been manning the kit for a few decades, now, and he's a much different, and more accomplished drummer than his predecessor (hell, Peter's initial replacement, Eric Carr was a far superior drummer). That's also not Ace (Tommy Thayer) in the Spaceman makeup. Tommy also is a far more proficient player. Unfortunately, you really weren't even close to playing much of this song correctly.

Much respect for Paul and Gene for keeping it going for as long as they have BUT , Ace was always my favorite member and had all of the classic licks. No disrespect to that Tommy Thayer dude but theres only one Spaceman. Its like when Axl Rose put a top hat on some random guitarist and tried to still call the band Guns and Roses. Just not the same. Was so glad I got to see KISS when all four original members put the make up on and reunited.

Unfortunately that's not Ace or Peter it's Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer who replaced them in the early 2000's .However if you really want to check out a powerhouse version of Kiss you should check out the non makeup line up of the late great Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick

The criticism I’ve always hated about kiss is something to the effect of “Kiss sucks because their music is really simple and nothing groundbreaking.” Yes. KISS’ music is pretty simple. So what?! Gene Simmons is a competent bassist, Paul Stanley is a good rhythm guitarist, the two Eric’s are really good drummers, Ace Frehley and Bruce Kulick are *great* guitarists, Tommy Thayer is decent. That’s all they need to be. Not everybody has to be Eddie Van Halen, or Roy Buchanan, or Stevie Ray Vaughan. Since when did simple become synonymous with bad? Their music is fucking fun!

Great review but Tommy and Eric instead of Ace and Peter, but the same music. I agree with you about the band I was hooked since listening to the Detroit Rock City 45 with Beth on the flip.

Eric does the extra hits, Peter Criss did not do them as much. You should do the album version instead of this live version. Notice how Tommy is playing a sunburst les paul at the beginning but during the solo he's playing a black with white pick guard les paul.

that isn't Peter Criss or Ace Frehley... that is Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer... this lineup has existed for 20 years

If you didn't want to do a reaction to a 70's video, could you at least have used a show with the original lineup? Ace and Peter deserve better from you and Kevin. The fact you didn't know is no excuse, cuz you should have felt: "This isn't the original lineup is it? I can hear it's not."

Sadly, you should've done Kiss 77, but yeah the fun simple music makes kids want to play. As a kid growing up, playing Kiss songs was way easier than Van Halen, it's like learning to walk before running.

People who don't know the difference between Peter/Eric and Tommy/Ace are posers and not a true fan...so don't try, it's embarrassing..

Ya know Mike, I admire your intellectual gifts relative to music theory. I really do. Maybe I'm just envious. Whatever. But please dial back your hubris and talk to the average man about the guitar. Sure your audience is for the guitar player extraordinaire. But you are so full of yourself it is to the point of satire.

Thanks for the video. But the drummer here is Eric Singer and the guitarist is Tommy Thayer. They were replacements after Peter Criss was fired and Ace Frehley quit.

Love Gun & Calling Dr Love are my 2 favorite Ace solos. Unholy is my favorite Bruce solo. Funny that they finished this song live with the end to I Just Wanna.

Peter Criss? Haha! If you can't tell that's not Peter & Ace just by looking at them just look at the date & your name. I think they split in either 2000 or 2002 while on tour in Australia or Asia.
