Knew him. Hung out In a few local bars with him. He grew up close to me around Belfast. Saw him live In Belfast before he made it big he was such a well known talent in Ireland before he went global. He used to say you Go to school now to play guitar and he played guitar to get away from school. Witty guy. His move from metal, rock and jazz to blues was fascinating at the time. His face scar was caused in a bar when a guy was hassling his girl and the chap broke a beer glass on the table and put it in his face. He played in the kings hall in Belfast around the after the war time and he found the perfect place on the stage to get massive sustain via the amps. He was able to sustain notes for minutes. The sound was searing. Was like he was controlling the voice of a demon. He mastered the use of the instrument.

I was never super close with my dad. But the one thing we can ALWAYS pick up and talk about for hours is what an absolute fucking monster this man was on a guitar. No matter the genre, no matter the setting. The bond we have over Gary's music I will cherish forever. When my dad dies, Parisienne Walkways will be the last song played at his funeral, and it will be the last song played at mine. I dont care what anybody says, Gary Moore was the best guitar player on the planet and its no contest for me. Pure unadulterated emotion through an instrument. May not be the cleanest player, may not be the most technical, but he was the best to ever do it for the reason the guitar was invented: emotion.

Well, if you're one, you know. The sound just literally tickles your insides as if someone is tickling you, it's a reaction that makes your heart and soul jump alive with a pure joy. I went to see Gary Moore in Oxford a couple of weeks before he sadly passed away. I remember the stack of amps and volume being so cranked up that i thought the balconies in the venue would tumble down on the audience. My head was completely exploding with this assault of sound and distortion. This was the loudest guitar i ever heard and all i could do is stare with my mouth open. Most impressive still, this was played with such feel and control. It was like a roller coaster of guitar playing. I will never forget that night and that sound. Rest in peace Gary, may you rock in heavens with the greats.

Gary Moore had arguably the greatest most ferocious tone of any guitar player in history, I saw him at the roxy in Hollywood back in 1987, he had 2 one hundred watt jcm 800s, two 4x12 cabs , a cry baby and a tube screamer, that’s it, he melted paint and crushed other guitarist dreams. It’s rumored that many who saw him that night switched to drums. However he inspired me.

His performance of The Messiah Will Come Again live at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1990 might be the greatest guitar performance of all time. Yeah I feel comfortable saying that. I have worn out that dvd watching it and I am still not tired of watching him rip that guitar to pieces and then slowly make love to it over and over again. Masterpiece.

@@voodoornb not even that. He usually played with a good amount of reverb but when you have a 100 watt plexi or JCM800 or both dimed with that much treble, it’s extremely unforgiving. Every little mistake is heard by everyone in the venue and for him to attack the guitar like this given his rig is just incredible

Gary moore could do more with 3 notes from the pentatonic scale than a lot of guitarists can do with the whole neck, absolute genius, love the way he didn't lose his Irish roots and melded celtic traditional music with rock and blues he was also left handed, but learned to play with the right, I also live just outside belfast, Garys son jack is also a great player :)

I am from the USA. I am embarrassed that at age 71 I had never heard of Gary until recently. I love they way he uses his fingers like BB King. He is balls to the walls and I love him. How he keeps controlling the volume levels and makes the guitar cry. I love Jimi, Eric, Randy, Jake and I also like Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad but Gary is my favorite. I also had not heard of Thin Lizzy until recently. What a talent he was. The British bands were hands down better than the USA bands.

In the '70's I used to hate guitar solos. Then I discovered Thin Lizzy and started liking them. Then Gary Moore joined Thin Lizzy and I started loving them. Then I started watching Gary Moore videos and loved them even more (no pun intended). That's why Gary more was, is and will always be one of the best and influential guitarists ever lived. I really wish I could have seen him live.... but I had a great pleasure to make friends and play with his brother Cliff, who is the sweetest guy and also wonderful player. Gary and his music will live forever and I truly hope more and more people will discover who he was and will continue to get influenced by him. I wouldn't be the same person without his influence. I’m 70 and I’ve heard all the great ones and only discovered Gary two years ago! How does that happen with a guy of this talent! It’s only because I live in America and Gary played mostly in UK and Europe. But when Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker pick him up as their lead guitar player and form BBM after Cream breaks up, that should have given the world a clue how good Gary was! It’s a pickin shame, I didn’t know about this fantastic talent sooner! Man if you haven’t listen to Gary get on KZbin listen to his version of “Red House he played at the 50th anniversary of Fender. Talk about bring down the House! Listen to his long version intro to “Separate Ways”. We are just so blessed to have had the opportunity to listen to Gary Moore! I just wish I could of been at one of his concerts. RIP to one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time! Thank you MP for finally giving Gary Moore the Love he deserves!

Love your channel! Had to comment because I think you’ve perfectly nailed Gary : a juxtaposition of master control and chops w/ the bawls of a Stallion! EVH hid the fact that he was a musical assassin behind his beguiling smile, but Gary gives no F’s for smiles. He knows he has that 100W SuperBass and he’s gonna make sure you leave the show having PHYSICALLY FELT that punch. You said it a lot Michael but to underscore: people can learn a lot about taming a wily 4 hole Marshall just by watching Gary’s use of the guitar controls and his two hands. Reverb sounds like it’s in front of the amp…So his picking force also controls the degree of reverb. THANKS AND BRAVO!!

Gary also had absolutely enormous hands - one of the reasons I think he favoured his second finger for some of the bends.....cramming three fingers into the box shape in higher positions was practically impossibl e for him. Also, learning to bend on an acoustic guitar left him with such strong, huge hands that his choice of strings and action left many players unable to play his guitars at all.

What you were talking about, regarding the amplifier is the instrument, playing the electricity, that's the one thing that Les Paul never understood, here was the guy who basically invented it but he never realized it was a totally different instrument, that the guitar and the amp together was a new instrument, not just an amplified guitar. I think Gary Moore's tone on the "Blues for Greeny Album is as perfect of a humbucker sound as you can get.

That's a pretty profound way to put it and I never though about that. I mean Les Paul was almost looking to do completely away with amps with his recording model and those crazy low impedance pickups. He once mentioned he spent so much of his life trying to perfect the guitar to be able to provide perfectly clean usable sound plugged in directly to a recording console and he didn't get these Jimmy Page guys who were plugging into a big Marshall and cranked up the grit. He never really understood that electric feel. That's one of the few things that got past the wizard.

You need to see the Fender sponsored concert with anybody and everyone who became famous that played a fender. Gary played last with his 80s red strat through a Marshall DSL and played like 20 minutes of Red House. Amazing!

i was lucky to catch him live twice. First time in 1989 at the biggest indoor venue in my town where the last encore was this one! That hang note felt it lasted forever!! Before this tour he announced it would be the last time he played hardrock and future was blues. That lasted for many years but eventually he did Blood of Emeralds, Over the Hills, Empty Rooms to name a few. When someone reminded him of what he had said he kinda embarrassed and admitted that the old classics from the '80s actually were still good. The second time i saw him was 1990 at the Concert Hall where i live with featured special guest Albert Collins. His last encore was The Messiah Will Come Again and he did it with so much passion and emotion as he always did and also lots of improvisation. I was completely blown away!! When words failed him the guitar spoke!
