In this masterclass lesson, Richard Barrett shows you how to nail the hallmark licks of Gary Moore's blues guitar playing - emotive yet articulate, classic yet hard-hitting. In this video, Richard uses two thrilling solos to demonstrate the licks that underpin Gary's searing sound and teach you how to get them under your fingers.
This lesson features in Richard's Blues Headlines column, with full tab, for Guitarist Magazine's issue 514. Tile pic credit: Getty/POP-EYE/ullstein bild via Getty Images

One of my favourite guitarists. George Harrison once said about Gary: "He plays like God!" Thank you Richard!

Wonderful as ever! I shall certainly be rechecking that legato picking. The idea of 'leaning in' towards the direction your pick is going, across the strings, and seeing larger movements, being free with legato techniques and not being bogged down with picky picky, I'm sure I am crazy, Wonderful playing and teaching as ever! Nice one Maestro Barrett! 🎶🌟👍

You’re such a great musician- Gary hopefully somehow, somewhere is tapping his feet & rocking along in appreciation. 👍👏

Always +100 for anyone remembering and honouring Gary Moore: the reason/man that made me started playing guitar... seen him live three times... went home with a complex afterwards every time: he was so sharp and good live, uncredible....

Beautiful playing and an excellent lesson. The exercise and tips just after 4 mins on playing that fast pentatonic run are very helpful. Thanks Richard!

I don't know why, but, I fell in love with Gary the first time I listened to "Still Got the Blues"! 💓🔥 That was even before I barely know the basic major chords on the guitar! This guitarist, in my view, is one true genius of the instrument. 🌟👑

the use of the vibrato bar may be related to the notes dying out and attempting to extend them a bit further- Sustain doesn't seem to be a problem for your Choptank but perhaps Moore's strat felt lacking (to him) in that department

On the Choptank (Strat style guitar) yes. They’re a cross between Strat and Tele pickups Stu at Sunbear made for me. I love them 😁

Hi, at the moment I’m using Ernie Ball Ultra Slinky (10-48) on Fender style guitars and 10-52 on Gibson scale length. It’s more about how it feels than any difference in tone, which I’ve found to be negligible.

I have never been the biggest fan of the technical master's my self. Timing, like B.B. Ronnie or Mick Taylor or even Keith is my greatest love.
