Thanks Eddie, Good lecture. I found out a long time ago there was no best for me. I listen t almost everything now from rock, progressive, indie, metal, pop jazz, jazz fusion, folk, bluegrass and just colorful instrumentals that i am not sure have a genre and yes, yes Eddie, even country. ;-) I was fortunate to be the youngest in my family and listened to the music of my parent and 5 other siblings. Country was one of the last to get into my head and soul as I was not thrilled with the vocals at the time but then as I got better at guitar I saw how incredibly talented the guys who were not singing were talented. Speed, timing, exquisite technique. I was blown away. Some of these guys I would love to see do instrumentals like Satch Vai, Timmons and so many others. Nothing like just listening to a back beat, a thumping bass and a person that can emote such pleasure, sadness, relief and every other emotion. It really doesn't matter who is doing it. I remember seeing Neal Schonn do an instrumental 30 years ago and it still sings to me. I love seeing guitarist walk away from the band and do their thing. Sure some guys will always speak to me because their technique makes me feel the music more in some ways as other. It's like seeing a great vocalist and I know what Jeff Beck can bring to the party. The way that Alvin Lee gave it all all the time. Or Tommy Emmanuel melts your brain playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The progressive playing of Steve Howe from Yes and the style he plays on his own. The quick compositions that Frank Gambale leaves your jaw hanging when he reaches the crescendo of his piece. Acoustic finger pickers that make you think they are playing 2-3 guitars. On and On and On. Paco Deluca, McGlaughlin, Al DeMilola. I love to just hear the guitar and what people can make you feel with it. It is truly my favorite instrument and then keyboards. I haven't even mention influences that i loved like Page and the turning point for me into acid rock with Hendrix. They all own a piece of me. I have watched you wind up too Eddie when you where practicing with Charlie and didn't have to share any time or stage with anyone and was so impressed with your growing intensity and your ability to take the music higher and not wanting to stop. Right on. I should also mention the guys that sit in. Studio guys. The ones we never see and maybe never hear about Just what was that and who did that thinking it was the artist from the record usually but sounded different. Those guys like Tim Pierce who is out in the media scene now. I think Marty Schwartz introduced him to social media. Well that just is drop in the bucket of what I enjoy and thought people would know the names. Most of them they would not know probably. So ask me for a favorite and your likely to get a list a few hundred pages long and a story why each of them are the best. I hope others do look at the artists and not just the bands. They are so good and so many.

Hi Eddie, you are a good teacher, no doubt in my mind. The strum technique using a drum beat was very rewarding to me. I'm a 77 year old first time beginner coping like a little kid to condition my finger tips and overcome a very early life accident breaking my left wrist (compound fracture). So many lessons are offered by GuitarMastery, I'm just trying to stick with the basics. I have relatives and close friends that play by ear and good at it, however, I've by passed the gimmicks of Chord Buddy and GuitarMate to use the old fashion finger method. I never knew there was so much knowledge base for playing the guitar. Makes me appreciate my lifelong friend Jimmy Johnson (RIP) from the Swampers - Muscle Shoals Sound. He was an amazing guitar player. I'm already seeing a difference in my fingers and trying to memorize the basic chords. Eventually, I will open Country lessons as a goal.

I needed this today , so thank you. My comparison depressions come from the videos of guys playing a song 100% perfect down to the exact tone. It kills my motivation. I can play a ton of songs close to perfect but always feel they don't sound like the originals. Not sure how much the post editing plays into it. It deflates me all the time but my saving grace is telling myself I don't want to play other peoples stuff but find my original voice on the instrument. There is a great quote by Jerry Garcia (paraphrasing): "You don't want to be the best at what you do, you want to be the only one that does what you do."

I couldn't agree more with your rant Eddie! Great players inspire! The journey is about leveling up "your" standard. Who knows one day, I'll wake up and find my lightbulb moments that level up my playing. Until then it's put in the work and measure success against yesterday. But I know I'm miles from where I started 6 months ago!

Hey Eddie, you are soooo right. You know on one of the lessons a few month back, (If I remember correctly it was Charlie who put the question out there)"Who is your fav guitarist and why" I could not answer that. Why? Every time a guitarist name came to mind, a voice in my head said"Hold on, what about........" Bottom line, if you like the playing great. My own journey as a guitarist is a slow steady one. I am making sometimes tiny gains sometimes Quantum Leaps usually courtesy of any of the GMM team . Thanks a whole bunch. Trev.

Thanks a lot Eddie. Sometimes we (I) need a pep talk. Work took too much of my practice time which was leading on a downward spiral, coupled with comparing myself to a lot of friends, who are much more advanced. Made me not want to practice, or do anything. Meanwhile a red Strat is looking at me everyday waiting. Best lesson, still a hard one to practice sometimes, but great non lesson.

Eddie I agree with you 100%. I have struggled with this for a long time. When I compared myself to other players that I was jamming with I always played at my worst. When I just do my best and play my style I always feel like I play better and enjoy it more. Thanks for bringing this subject up.

I just started to practice, play again after a long while. And I'm guilty of this, especially in the advent of social media it's kind of depressing to see these amazing players. Not into comparing others though (Ex: John Petrucci vs David Gilmour). Just block out everything and focus to be a better player than yesterday or years ago. Thanks Eddie!

I'm in the same situation! And yeah, some of those literal children can be pretty daunting (Toby Lee is a great example) - but they can also inspire me. I just remind myself that Beethoven felt much the same way about Mozart, and keep doing what I can do 'til I start doing better.

You have inspired this rank beginner. I practice past the sore wrist and still slightly tender fingers because my commitment to learn is important to me. I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with the number of voices in a 6 string guitar. How will I ever learn all this? I felt slow, plodding until this talk. Now I know I go my speed and that is sufficient. Thank you.

This applies to a lot more than just guitars. Besides guitar, I also play saxophone, and it's the same sorta deal--"Coltrane!" "No, Getz!". And it goes beyond just music and musicianship--it's all of life. Figure out who and where you want to be, and then start heading in that direction.

We always want to improve. some think we are great and some don't. The point is accept where your skill and drive comes from. It's from within. Asking for a critique or giving one should not be judgemental. Envy green is not a defining color.

Hi Eddie, Yea saw one of those convos on our F/B page.. There are Wayyyy Too Many superb guitarists in ALL Genres.. I can't say personally that I've had that comparison syndrome.. I Aspire higher... That being said, while I'd love to play like JJ But I want to Surpass him.. :)))

I never weigh into those debates on who is the best pro guitarist, but I do have a lot of trouble not comparing myself to others. I suffer from manic depression so it’s hard for me to do much of anything some days, including practicing guitar. The last week or so I’ve been struggling even with basic open chords, but I think my head’s just not in the game because my life is such a mess right now.
