I have bought 6 Glarry strats as modification platforms. I usually upgrade with a fret job, Metallor locking tuners, Guyker tremolo's, a loaded pickguard of different configurations, and D'Addario 9's, nickel wounds. I've had to route the tremolo wider to accommodate the thicker base on 2. Black is the only color I've bought that I find to be a sub-par finish. Guitar $55 - $65. Total cost w/upgrade around $130 - 140. I haven't found a guitar that matches the quality of my builds for under $249. Glarry is a great mod platform. Make sure to buy the model with the Glarry on the headstock. There are 2 levels of quality.

Good advice but i'd play safe and go direct from Glarry as I did have a lemon from ebay with their logo on. I asked when purchasing another direct and apparently they sell their A grade direct and pass on everything else to others. The £16 difference was worth it.

Its the string retainers that cause the most tuning instability , move the taller d/g retainer to the b/e , just remove that retainer, loosen the outside screws on the bridge a turn and the inside screws A half of a turn , lube the nut with pencil lead , loosen the springs till the bridge slightly floats , dump bar , retune and repeat till it stays in tune .

My buddy is a professional musician and he bought a Glary P Bass for fun just to see if it was any good, around the same price.... He is a fellow YT'er...Don't worry I won't promote.... and he did a review on it.... He was very pleased for what it was. I've played it myself and enjoyed it. He did a full set up to it and ditched the factory strings for playibility but it's mostly stock still. For $100 with a nice set up and maybe a tuner upgrade this is a nice platform to play with and upgrade.

The tremolo likely went out of tune due to poorly cut nut slots. Literally a 10 minute fix. If you want some added smoothness, you can put chapstik in the nut slots, saddle slots and string trees. All my guitars with 6 screw trems have the stock cheapo pop metal trems and hold tuning fine with heavy use. The secret was filing the nut slots.
@over-there
@over-there Ай бұрын
I have three, now Max knows this, that tremolo is not set up yet, the six screws have to be loosened so it can pivot, floating set up the back of the trim is about 1/8 inch off the deck, can also set it up flat, or set it up as hardtail and put a wood block in by the springs, there are Utube vids on it. It has to have the screws loosened just a bit so it can pivot,, and then balance the tension between the strings and the springs in the back, loosen or tighten the springs by turning the screws in the claw, also spring placement can effect tension, and how many. Now ther are advantages and disadvantages to having a floating tremolo, such as changing tuning will change spring tension. The tremolo comes set up as a hardtail. So floating you may want more than one guitar , because of the time it takes to retune if gig playing. I have learned to play on these guitars, then I developed a liking for the wizard bound neck with low action, got a jackson JS20, its a 179 dollar guitar on sale, ill match it against any 4000 dollar guitar with cheaper hardware, its about the bones, are they good, I still have glarys as backup, I still grab them to play. I dont want a 500 dollar floyd rose tremolo, not yet anyway, I will change tuners 80 bucks, floating wilkenson trem 40 bucks, locking nut and string guide, 30 bucks, maybe copper tape with conductive glue inside all cavities, that js is equal to any guitar made, I will polish the jumbo frets, fine steel wool, maybe touch up fret ends, after a point your paying for whats on the guitar, diy saves money if you have skills, Utube videos on it all.

Once I learned to do my own setup and fretwork getting a budget guitar to play great was no longer a mystery. My 'pro' tip is check your circle for someone who either is or knows a guitar nerd who will help you get one of these 'cheap' instruments set up and take the plunge. I got a First Act strat playing so good once I almost put nice pickups in it and kept it as a daily player. It was a $20 craigslist find that is how I got better at fret work. Buy for nothing and do the work then sell it and get your money back.

These starter kits are DEFINITELY the way to go because it's far easier to start on an electric guitar than an acoustic model. This is because the body is slimmer and you can use gain to hide minor mistakes, mistakes that you will end up not making anyway but it's nice to sound better sooner. I personally started on a Washburn Strat starter pack from Costco. Washburn used the moniker "GWL" or "George Washburn Limited" and it came with not only everything you saw there but also a STAND. It cost $180CAD back then. The guitar itself was some kind of Washburn Sonamaster (Strat-type) and, while it needed a pro setup, once it was set up, it was AMAZING. I still play it daily EIGHT YEARS LATER. Now, I have four electrics in total. I have my GWL Sonamaster, a Gibson Maestro SG, a Godin Solidac (dual-voice LP-style) and a Godin Session SG RN (Modded Strat with H-H-H). My Session SG is my favourite but my GWL is the one I play most because it's light, easy to play and I don't worry about scratching or nicking it. Frankly, I don't think that I could've done better.

Excellent review as always! have that exact model and color. I keep it at my parent's house so I don't have to lug a guitar over when I visit. I think most Glarrys are a good value. I also have the telecaster and Ibanez RG7 Glarry copies. Though for the same price, you can get a Monoprice Indio guitar, which I think is a more solid higher quality instrument. My $110 Indio Telecaster is just unbelievable for the price. For a few more dollars on Black Friday I ordered the Squier Sonic Mustang ($139 reg. $199). I'll let you know about that one after it is delivered. Squiers have come a long way. I was tempted to get the $100 Squier Debut Strat but I have a MIJ Fender Strat and various copies. What I really need is a 12 step program for Guitar Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)! 😅

I have purchased a heap of cheap guitars and I have to say apart from a few I bought the quality of them has been pretty good. The great thing about purchasing a cheap guitar is that you can purchase your own parts and upgrade them to something that’s comparable to a mid or high priced guitar. As long as you have the skills to fix any issues that may arise and you have the hardware, you can create something that’s very useable. At the moment I’m building my dream Tele and Strat from parts I’ve been collecting for a while.

I love to see reviews on amyove electric guitars or even an aliexpress brand called "smiger" they have nice affordable ovation style guitars, with really beautiful finishes. Amyove, also for a cheap guitar, has built in chorus and delay, room reverb, and hall reverb, and distortion analog, for about $80 to $120. Pretty cool too, and hardly any reviews. Only like one guy reviewed a previous made model, but not the one mentioned with built in existing mods.

I have a single Glarry guitar that I bought specifically to be a project guitar. It was "ok" right out of the box, but definitely not great. I mean it was mostly playable with some basic setup. Action was really high, frets were alright, and it sounded ok. For a beginner guitar though it does what it needs to do. The reason I bought it though was because I liked the look of it. So I wanted it to be something I could learn how to mod with. Which I've been doing since I got it. Now, I have a couple of other guitars just as cheap, but no where near as ready to use out of the box. Those were the KTaxon branded ones. Those are awful. I ended up reshipping 3 of those back to Zon and Flea Bay because well.. they all required a lot of work out of the box to even be played. I tried with replacements and the replacements were just as bad if not worse. Seriously going though a good handful of those and they all had major functional issues. Just to say, if you look around on various places these Glarry guitars can be found very cheap. Places like Flea Bay, Team Moo, Ally Xpress tend to sell these for a lot cheaper.

I bought a Glary Strat copy. First off I tried to change the strings like I always do on cheap guitars anyway. But the strings would not come out of the bridge, so I pulled it off and they were stuck in the tone block. Or should I say tone sliver. I’ve never seen such a thin tone block on anything. So I ordered a brass block from Guitar Fetish and when I went to change it out I took off all of the string guides on the bridge and discovered that no two holes that attached the bridge to the body lined up. So I filled the holes with tooth picks and glue. Let them dry for a couple days and redrilled all of the pilot holes. Then o moved on the the neck which wasn’t sanded and sanded it until it was smooth, then gave it several coats of F One Oil. Since then I got new pickups which were really cheap, but tested on another channel. After that two or three other products came in so I’ll finish those before going back to the Glary. Meanwhile my friend bought one of their Tele style guitars and everything worked fine. So maybe mine was built before happy hour on a Friday night and they just threw it together. No matter what though, I won’t reccomend one to anybody!

What I’ve always wondered is why any company would include routing for a trem if they know the using a trem will just throw the thing out of tune. Why not just use a hard tail bridge with a string-through body? Squier won’t even do that anymore without a top-loading bridge. Glarry could 1-up them with that.
@GuitarMAXMusic

That's a very good point. It's just tradition at this point, and some companies can't escape that.

I have a sunburst Glarry that I have floated the tremolo bridge and it stays in tune when I use the whammy bar. A vintage 6 screw tremolo will stay in tune if the strings are strung through the tuners correctly, all friction points are lubricated, the nut cut correctly, etc... Checkout the FruduaTV YT channel and setup your guitar like he says. You'll be amazed how well any guitar will stay in tune.

I think they are great for what they are. A beginner would never know if its shortcomings. A seasoned player will notice all the downfalls almost immediately, lol I bought one of the Mustang style guitars, i wanted to try a 24" scale as i never have even played one. Needless to say that i ended up buying an aftermarket neck, and the neck needs some work too, but the wood in the Glarry neck almost seemed like balsa wood to me, lol

Keeping in mind this is a beginner level guitar, if I were buying for a kid to get their first experience, I think a better package would be a hardtail, and rather than including a cheap strap, and the whammy bar, a electronic tuner would probably be welcome. I think a guitar that stays in tune and helping a beginner learn how to tune a guitar makes the experience of learning more enjoyable. I can tell you that I still to this day can't tune by ear.

This is just my experience, but I have bought 4 Garry axes all were fairly cheap, money wise, but that also means material is cheaper, wood, pick ups, bridges, nuts, wires, you get the idea, however for 100$ be happy with a good body and a good neck. From that statement you should be able to put together the rest of this, you have to set these guitars up , one needed a bridge adjustment and neck adjustment, expected in my opinion, the rest needed full set ups and the cheapest one 70$ strat like had to be gutted and well if you don't know what that entails don't buy these guitars, if you do then fine, turned out to be a Great sounding guitar, with alot of pacientance and work, strangely enough bout the black version of your deal everything the same, just a black super strat. That is the one that had least done to it, now these are decent mod guitars, but to just buy and play, may not be what you want 16:50

Thank you Max; awesome factual and to the point video. Glarry has the reputation for the low end budget market and for that portion of the market it's an absolute value king of the market. Your right the trem sucks but a decent trem alone will cost over the whole cost of the guitar. This is a basic first learning instrument but can be an upgrade platform as well. It lends itself well to develop ones basic luthier skills as well, which is a good thing and will help make a starting player a better player and continue interest in guitar. So overall I agree 100% with your review video. 73 GOD bless Earnest K5EWM 👍.

Do you stretch the strings on guitars that you get before you tune them up?

I got one of the Burning Fire models after your other videos. I've been thinking about DIYing wax potting the pickups. I did an OEM test and found all three pickups read at 12.6 OEMs. That seems high to me but I don't know. If anyone could tell me if I should just replace them and if so why I would be very grateful. Thanks, Max, and everyone!

Mexican strat is only worth about 300$ to me, i guess four hundred with a case American strat are better go through more extensive quality control checks. But anyway glarry aren't bad had a couple before. Can't beat it for the price.

I have heard so many youtubers talk really bad about Glarry but this thing sounds badaas through your amp settings, I have never tried Glarry but I have had lots of cheap guitars over the years and actually prefer them to my expensive guitars I used to buy as years ago when a cheap $100 used squier played just as good as my $1,000 Gibson studio Les Paul I quit wasting money on expensive guitars & with all the cheapies I have owned in the last decade never had a major issue with any of them

Or neck profile or overall weight. So called reviewers never talk about the stuff that matters to buyers. How these thigs compare to the burning fire you reviewed? Essential info, not given.

People who complain about six screw tremolos losing tuning have yet to learn how to set up a guitar. Six screw tremolos can stay in tune just fine with frantic and heavy use. This guitar likely just has poorly cut nut slots.

I think the guitar is decent. The amp,not so much. I would hardtail the bridge and put good tuning machines on it and copper shield the electronics.

I've had nothing but bad experiences with Glarry guitars. Their bass was excellent though. I don't know if they've improved any hadn't bought anything with the Glarry name since 2020

It's a good guitar to learn how to do stuff like upgrading and setting up. But it's not something that has great sound out of the box. And yeah, I bought one just to see.

I don't know dude. They sound pretty good for that price range. Are they putting a chip in it or somethin'? (Please don't murder me if it's true, whoever you are)

Hey Max. It's funny you said that some people expect so much more than that for $100. There's some people who expect a 1959 Gibson Les Paul and a 1959 Fender Bassman amp (all original, of course) for that price. Unrealistic.
