Rule of thumb with pcb's, leaded solder and flux
@izzzzzz62 күн бұрын
I use two techniques to open these. If you stab with a screwdriver you stand a huge chance of destroying more components inside. Open the wings for cable tying. Find a tool that fits perfectly in this space. I used a leatherman tool as it fits in that large gap. Then twist the case open. This takes some working. The other technique I use on similar casings is to crack it with a heavy tool I generally grab my adjustable grips. And crack over and over all the way around the seam. When it starts to make more of a hollow noise the seam is breaking, keep popping, wedging twisting and prying but carefully. Cable change easy, use tape to hold it all back together. sometimes you get bad capacitors or inductor wires that broke from a shock.

Also they made a power cable that plugs into the slot. That way you didn’t have to try and get that brick down behind a desk. You just run the power cable down behind or through a desk and leave it and plug the brick into it. Then to go mobile you just unplug the brick and put the connector back on. It did work well for an office setup but agree they make their stuff just to be thrown away so you can’t work on it and have to buy another.

I'm thinking the solution for repairing/refurbishing these power adapters is to design a 3D print replacement housing. That way you could just break open the crApple housing without trying to make it reusable, but still have a solid shell to keep the repaired unit in afterwards. The major problem at that point is how to repair the magsafe connector if the wire is damaged/frayed.

I've had good luck opening welded plastic shells with a knife and a hammer. Put it on an anvil or some other chunk of metal, get a beat up knife, it doesn't have to be sharp, just has to get in the gap and it's better if it's not a curved blade. A few confident taps with a heavy hammer and it cracks the weld without damaging the edge.

They and most manufaturers use very high temp solder. The trick many use to unsolder is to add a low temp solder to each area that needs to be unsoldered. After it cools go back to unsoldering. The lower temp solder mixed into the high temp solder lowers the temp needed to unsolder.

I had a MacBook Pro circa 2013 with a similar proprietary charger. I absolutely hated that charger! That cable messed up quite a bit. I replaced the charger probably three times. As for the computer itself, it was a lemon for some reason. It went in the shop probably four times. Whatever happened usually killed the hard drive. I finally had enough and bought a Windows laptop in about 2017. Not long after the M1 chip came out, I bought a MacBook Air that uses a USB-C charger. No repairs other than an accident I had with the screen. I'm extremely happy with the Air so far. If the USB-C cable fails, just plug in a new one. Why Apple didn't make the Magsafe cable user replaceable is beyond me.

34:48 If you have any ABS plastic lying around, you can soak it in acetone and make a glue out of it. I use an old apple 5W charger plastic housing, soak it in acetone making it liquid. Best part is you're fusing it together into one just like how they do it in the factory. Not to mention clean finish.

I guess when they say “no user serviceable parts inside” they mean it. A Dremel cutting wheel or precision oscillating cutting tool are great for getting in that crap. Just need to be careful. Then glue or melt some plastic in acetone. It’s the unleaded solder and probably a heavy ground plane that makes desoldering a pita. I’ve been reinforcing all my charging cables with heat shrink tubing right from the start. I have a small portable torch for heat shrink tubing. Works great! More than Apple build their stuff like that. As an electronics tech I want to fix things and have the knowledge and safety understanding. I’m not so sure I would trust any Joe Blow tearing into something like this and accidentally creating a fire hazard.

Way to repair that brick! Boy, you probably gave some Apple engineers palpitations with this video, lol. 🤣🤣🤣 That solder was wicked. I really enjoyed seeing you rip that white casing to shreds. I have an identical brick with one of those Magic Connectors from an old MacBook Air from 2011 or so, sans the actual laptop, lol. Anyway, the brick is missing the little connector forcing the plugs for each country. I keep wondering if there’s a compatible aftermarket replacement for that piece so I can put a US plus back on the brick. The plug is like new, and I bet someone I know can use it. Just one of the many things that pisses me off about Apple is that they still insist on using that dogshit rubber/plastic to cover their cables! My first MacBook charger now has tape and heat shrink for it's entire length. The first thing I did to all my subsequent chargers is to wrap a pen spring around each end of the cable and put heat shrink over that to prevent at least the first two points of failure. Not much can be done to prevent that shitty rubber/plastic losing it's integrity over time though

where are you finding it that cheap? Or are they fake chargers? The fake ones are not safe to use whatsoever.
@Subgunman3 күн бұрын
I recall seeing these power cables only on eBay at a reasonable cost. It does require one to open the case. These MagSafe chargers have a proprietary connector on the computer side that informs the supply it needs higher current to charge the laptop. The insulation is made from an environmentally safe material which unfortunately degrades way too fast. Oils from your fingers and hands will contribute to its demise. Apple wants to sell you a new charger with the junk cable knowing it will fail again in a few short years since it has already been sitting for a decade. When those chargers are all gone, your laptop becomes a brick. Apple IS NOT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY. Don’t we just love that low lead solder? Yes it takes a bunch of heat to get it to melt. It is also the cause of many failures on boards because it is way too brittle. When trying to remove that junk dope the joint with conventional solder before trying to use the extractor. It will blend with the low lead in effect lowering the melting point of the low lead solder.
