Cool landing at San Bernardino Int'l. My father was stationed at the former Norton AFB, back in '70-'71. We lived up Stirling Ave, from the base with the cross street of Highland. For some reason knowing it was the old Norton AFB you landed at brought back some fun memories. Thanks for posting!

SBD used to be Norton AFB. It was established shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked to protect the southern California area. That's why it's so far inland. I learned to fly out of VNY which was the best training environment as you learn to deal with insanely dense traffic from day one. I really enjoy your channel and thank you for it!

I've been in Las Vegas in my RV the last couple of weeks. I check Flight aware the other day and saw you were here. The RV park I stay at is about 1.5 miles off the end of the 19's. The next morning i was outside and looked up and saw a Gulfstream departing that looked like your pictures. Checked Flight Aware and yep, it was you guys. Did you see me waving? 68 years old, been flying since I was 11 and I still get excited about airplane flying overhead...........what's wrong with me? LOL. I spent several days out at Nellis watching and photographing the array aircraft participating in Red Flag, really Kewl.

I’m a new viewer to your channel, Sean (I think I got your name right). I’m so amazed at how well you and John work together. You guys are a great team. Both of you see so precise in all you do. So far, I’ve watched 4-5 of your videos, and have really enjoyed them. I would definitely feel safe with you two in command of the aircraft. I was a line crewman at an FBO at Houston Hobby (Houston Intercontinental Airport back then), back in the early 1960’s. I remember when the first Gulfstreams came out, with those screaming GE turboprops engines. Boy, those things were so loud with that high-pitch scream. The Gulfstream jets hadn’t come out yet at that time. Anyway, I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks for sharing them, and keep up the good work. Fly safe on your upcoming flights.
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
There are a few old G1s at Palm Beach still flying, They sure are loud, but I still love them. It's actually Shaun and Jon. Very few people get them right first time around. I hope you enjoy the videos!
@richardvarner28026 жыл бұрын
My apologies, Shaun, and thanks for the reply and the correction. Yeah, I still love those G1s, as well. I remember that back in those days, the Vickers Viscount also had 4 of those engines. We had both aircraft stationed at our FBO, and I remember when that Viscount would come return from a trip. Boy, those 4 engines screaming was twice as loud as the Gulfstream G1. WOW!! What memories I have of those days. Safe flying, Guys, and enjoy each trip.

Great video. Im an old Navy guy and whenever I think of Gulfstream, I think of the Grumman Aircraft Corporation of Bethpage, NY, and all the great planes they made for the US Navy. The reason the Gulfstream is synonymous with build quality goes back to its Grumman DNA. It takes a strong airframe to land on a carrier---each trap is like being in a car accident---and Grumman made the best. The F-14 Tomcat was one of their last ones, and it helped win the Cold War. I remember reading that on more that one occasion during the Korean War, that John Glenn was able to fly his Grumman F9F Panther back and land it even though it was so shot full of holes that maintenance crews just marked it as junk....it couldn't be repaired. That's one tough airplane. Grumman also made the Lunar Landing Module for the Apollo program, and thus allowed to us land on the moon six times. Of course, Grumman is now part of Northrop Grumman, and the Gulfstream division was sold to General Dynamics years ago. It's really a "Grumman" Gulfstream you're flying. But I'm sure you guys know all that. Keep up the great work!
@chrissixfix6 жыл бұрын
And we are still building them to the same standards
@niceguy21716 жыл бұрын
Great info celestialfix, and have heard the John Glenn F9F story before, and some others about the toughness of Grumman aircraft, from a old aircraft mechanic I apprenticed with at 1 point.
@celestialfix6 жыл бұрын
niceguy217 Hey niceguy, yeah in the Navy, Grumman's planes were so tough and over-engineered, that the company was jokingly referred to as "Grumman Iron Works." And pilots liked them because, as the John Glenn stories point out, it was a "coming home" airplane even after taking a beating that would have brought down most other similar aircraft. Best to you.
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
Some of that Gulfstream/Grumman lineage I did know. However, I did not know that Grumman made the Lunar Landing Module...that's amazing! They do make very tough airplanes.
@celestialfix6 жыл бұрын
Corporate Pilot Life And consistent with the "Grumman Iron Works" over-engineered image, during Apollo 13 when the North American Rockwell built service module became disabled, Grumman's Lunar Landing Module, which was only supposed to land and take off from the Moon, became the main engine for getting the crew back to Earth, and executed a number of cold start burns it was never designed to have to do. As a joke to NASA, Grumman later sent a bill to Rockwell for a "towing charge," lol.
