I watched this video when I had pain from gum recession two years ago, and I eventually saw Dr. Choi and had two surgeries at his office. Both surgeries were successful and my symptoms had completely gone away two months post surgery. Eating feels joyful again! The two surgeries corresponded to two different locations, which are mirroring teeth on opposite sides, so they serve as good comparisons. My first surgery was Dr. Obando and the second one with Dr. Choi. The surgery with Dr. Choi led to significantly less bleeding, less complication, almost no pain, and no scarring at the harvest site. His technique and skills are much better than the average surgeon and I recommend people see him directly. My first surgery, although successful, caused a lot of bleeding and now I have a scarred bump on the roof of the mouth. Dr. Obando prescribed mouthwash which led to oral thrush, for which I had to go through additional treatment. This didn’t happen with my surgery with Dr. Choi - the mouthwash was not prescribed, and I didn’t have a scarred bump at the harvest side. Dr. Choi also said that the surgery is much more likely to succeed if I use my own tissue (which is fresh with blood supply) by harvesting from the roof of my mouth. However, Dr. Obando pushed for the expensive and convenient donor tissue option, which is a dry product without blood supply. So there’s a conflict of opinion between doctors and I exercised my own judgement. I declined the donor tissue with Dr. Obando out of the concern that the donor tissue is a piece of dried and pale foreign substance and I imagined my own tissue would be much better received and connected once grafted. Several months post surgery, my gum operated by Dr. Choi is also much thicker and full compared to the side done by Dr. Obando, potentially because Dr. Choi had an additional step of injection that promotes tissue generation. Moral of story: be careful choosing your surgeon. Even surgeons from the same office created very different outcomes in my case.

I had an donor gum graft (i.e Alloderm) about 5.5 weeks ago, so my post is only specific to that procedure. If you got the same one and are concerned about white tissue, it may be perfectly normal. In my case, the dentist left some of the donor tissue hanging out past the gum line (covering the top part of the teeth) and that part was white, and stayed white. I assume it was there to protect the entry point and try to help the gum lower a bit. Those white parts eventually fell off around weeks 3 to 4. I asked my dentist about white tissue being a sign of failure and he said it's normal for parts to be white because not everything receives blood right away (so layers may die off). At this point, the dentist says the healing is going well and my gums feel great so the white tissue I had turned out to be a non issue. Hang in there fellow gum grafters and God Bless.

I was given minimal post op instructions told not to bite down on teeth, lower bottom teeth, and to avoid foods hard to chew. I asked for a handout, and they didn't have one. Should have been given Advil or Tylenol before I left. It was very painful. I did look online, so got information there. Wasn't expecting to go back and find out the surgery didn't work and that I have scar tissue. Wish I would have gone to someone like you.

Is the graft supposed to slowly grow down over the tooth or do they cover the root right away then it heals. I Just had it and it is the worst pain I ever felt in my life (hypersensitive to pain and etc.) The white pack came off and it dosent look like they covered the root of my tooth. They gave me no antibiotics either. That would have helped with pain and healing. Very little O meds too. Not strong enough. They make me feel like crap anyway.

My periodontist told me not to brush any portion of mouth or even swish or spit for two whole weeks. Is this normal? My entire mouth is coated in a sticky layer of food residue and white sloughing tissue from quitting vaping for the surgery (I assume). I’m worried I have tartar and cavities developing because of these aftercare instructions. The mouth washes they gave me are far too gentle to cut through the food and plaque especially without any kind of swishing movement…

own tissue is always more predictable. donor tissue definitely can be used with very good predictability too but its kind of hard to find a good periodontist that is predictable with it with all your teeth, with any instance of bone loss, etc.

I have severe bruxism and all I have is just a rubber otc night guard for my lower jaw(I typically make them for my upper jaw). It’s scary to hear some in the comments saying that they can bite down on teeth…when I have been needing to replace the guards every now and then. Despite having told my perios explicitly about it and the possible worst case scenarios. They said I can wear the bottom guard. I hope that they aren’t overconfident or that the stitches are strong enough. I’ve told them how I express that the bruxism could jeopardize everything but they remained confident.

I had a gum graft 5 or 6 days ago, I do vape and have struggled to not do so with my graft, and I’ve hit it very small only a few times each night since my graft because I couldn’t help myself. I know this is incredibly stupid of me but I couldn’t fight my impulse, but now I’m freaking myself out because I don’t know if the graft will work or not off of just a few hits. I’ve been taking care of it and following all other post op instructions, but I just don’t know if it’s working or not. Is there any way I can check or know if I’m still on the right track, or am I screwed because I took a few small puffs? A response would be greatly appreciated because I’m kinda freaking out and I want it to work but I just couldn’t help my self a few times over the past few days

Not much. The procedure sounded to me worse than it actually feels. I got my grafts yesterday, and already I'm off painkillers (all I used yesterday was Ibuprofen). The main problem is not pain but the restrictions on life style, namely, bans on the following: eating foods that are chewy, crunchy, acidic, or hot; leaning on the side of the mouth where the surgery performed as one might be in the habit of doing during sleep; opening the mouth in large movements as during talking; tooth brushing. Most of this, I am told, should be unnecessary after a month, at the end of which I have a post-op appointment to see if it actually worked.

I have had a 3rd degree burn which I had to scrub every day. This was worse than that. It was awful.

The healing process was brutal. I want to go back in time and slap past me for doing this procedure. I'm sure it is necessary for some people but I think I got suckered in by people looking to make money off me.

@@pubbets7290 Hey, I had this procedure done once already and I just had it done again 2 days ago. As the doctor said in the video, find a good surgeon and you'll be fine. Also follow the post-op instructions. Pain wise, I've felt literally none aside from when I got the local anesthesia, but everyone is different. One important thing I've found about this procedure is that you have to be careful about managing bleeding around the donor area afterwards, then again, everyone is different. As for you phobia, I'd suggest to get informed and learn some techniques online about how to get in a good mental space for operations. I was very nervous about surgeries a few years ago, I'm sure you can overcome it too. Dental care is very very important and it leads to a healthier life, I hope you're able to overcome your fear. Take care!

i had a gum graft 4 weeks go. I just looked at it and it looks like the grats are pinkish with a little bit of white in them. I read that means they fully generated? But my lower mouth where hte graft was done has been swollen the past few days.
