"Gumshoe" is an old term for a P.I. (private investigator). As for Honchkrow it's a play on "head honcho" or a person in charge. I enjoy these old terms being added to people's vocabulary. It makes me feel less old. 😂

In regards to your complaints about the yellow and the lack of noir looks, I think it came down to design focus. Alongside the Gumshoos/Raticate - Detective versus Mob Boss rivalry, the other element of the real world thing is that when the mongoose was set loose in Hawaii to handle the rat population, they forgot that mongeese are diurnal and hunt in the day, while the rats came out at night. Thus, they used that to emphasize the time change between games, with Gumshoos in the Day and Raticate in the Night. So yeah, Gumshoos HAD to be designed to function more in daytime, likely causing the peculiar color palette. I do hope it gets a new form though. I dig the mongoose pokemon ideas.

I think changing just the head (maybe to a darker brown) would be the best blend of both. The yellow would still be very prominent in the design while also making the hat motif more recognizable.

It's kinda weird, cause you have contrasting ideas here: Mongeese being active during the day but also being a detective (which in pop culture are associated with night just as much as the criminals they investigate). They couldn't really hone on on one without sacrificing the other.

It feels like they were going for a ‘Sherlock’ style hat thing with the ‘hair’ but that doesn’t even fit the design of a noir detective. Other signifiers could be a cigarette/cigar in their mouths but we know Nintendo won’t allow that. Plus somehow a ‘good guy’ Pokémon looks more villainous than its counterpart or a Pokémon designed after a mob boss. Whole design just comes across half-baked.

Funny how you mention Gumshoos looking more villainous than Allolan Raticate. They may have been going for something of a "dirty cop" vibe for it since in real life the introduction of mongoose to Hawaii did more harm than good. Mongoose are primarily diurnal while rats are nocturnal, so when mongoose were released on the Hawaiian Islands, they turned their attention to the eggs and chicks of ground-nesting native birds and mostly ignored the rats they were brought over to control.

I genuinely loved Gumshoos when i played moon, the detective vibe came through eventually because of the name but I always got the vibe that Yungoos was like a little mischievous rascal that evolved into a matured delinquent gang leader, and that Gumshoos' hair was a pompadour to go with it's jacket look. Since discovering the detective inspiration, i now see Gumshoos as a private eye that was reformed from a delinquent lifestyle but still has rebel tendencies. Gumshoos was the first and only instance of a rodent pokemon that I kept in my team and took too the end of the game, his name was Johnny Bravo and I loved him dearly.

Honestly, my Gumshoos kicked butt in my first Alola playthrough, and linchpinned some key battles for me. I really like the Pokemon, and I think it's theming is still appreciated compared to the prior early route mammal/rodent Pokemon. Diggersby would've been great if Huge Power was a normal ability for it and not it's hidden ability, but Gumshoos was the first one that I felt had at least something of a fun theme and delivered a useful Pokemon for the whole playthrough without needing a hidden ability for the first time. I've since loved Greedent and Oinkaloin, while not my favorite, had a lot of potential and the gender variant evolution is a fun gimmick. Though, I think Gumshoos and Greedent were the peak of the early game normal types. Again, honorable mention to diggersby if you can get one early on with it's hidden ability

Completely different but, as someone who grew up in Hawaii, the introduction of mongoose here was absolutely catastrophic. It turns out mongoose are mostly diurnal (daytime hunters) and opportunistic as hell and will eat anything that moves. Rats on the other hand are mostly nocturnal. So while yes, mongoose do eat rats.... The two rarely encounter each other. Mongoose are good at burrowing after rats, but the main rats we have problems with are the ones that like to nest in high places or buildings... Where mongoose don't reach. Also we have a bunch of native ground nesting birds that until the 1800s had no real natural predators. The rats did eat their eggs but then we introduced mongoose, domesticated cats, and dogs. Guess who eats the birds? Most of our native species have become endangered or extinct by now, which is why we have strict "do not import" laws on animals now. Anyway, regardless, i think it's funny the Pokémon games reference this issue by making their totem encounter version exclusive.

I don't care for them much anymore, but I remember on release I liked Yungoos. A lot of it was the sharp mouth, but I also found its weasely body shape very cute, similar to Chien-Pao. Gumshoos on the other hand always felt a lot more stiff. If it gets a regional form, it'd be kind of funny if it just became Arbok's rival, though I also wouldn't want it to step on Zangoose and Seviper's toes too much.

I agree that Gumshoos could look more closely like a detective, but I actually think that's a strength of the design, not a flaw: Gumshoos being a subtler reference to the real life job it's partly based on means I can still see it as an animal living in a natural environment, while I can't imagine something like Cinderace and its clearly clothes-inspired fur patterns, pose and weirdly underdeveloped, baby-doll arms just frolicking around in a grassland, because the reference and basis are laid on far too thick in the design; it's not an animal anymore, it looks more like a fur suit, a human dressing up as a rabbit mascot.

When you put Yungoos and Gumshoos side by side, you can see the difference in design. If I were to redesign Gumshoos, I would shave 4 inches of the sides and move the ears up to the shaved spot and make the ears a bit more defined.

The mongooses that were sent to Hawaii were native to India but were imported from Jamaica. That makes two places that could become new regions where we could see a regional form for this Pokemon. But then it would most likely receive a dual-typing, which would beg the question of why it lost that secondary typing in the first place.

Gumshoos is a great Pokemon. Maybe one of the greatest that Alola has ever seen. He's a hard-working member of our law enforcement. Believe me. Jokes aside, I always thought the quiff on top was like one of those driving hats/flat caps that ended up looking like blonde hair.
