Just remembered, an umbrella. At the battle at Arnham Major Allison Digby Tatham-Warter DSO took an umbrella with his kit as a means of identification because he had trouble remembering passwords and felt that anyone who saw him with it would think that "only a bloody fool of an Englishman" would carry an umbrella into battle.

Good functional kit. When possible spare boots are a pluss. But other then that woudent change anything.

It's worth wearing an analogue watch, and how to use it as a crude compass. That saved me on a day of orienteering many days ago. I'll just say it was before GPS.

@@EnglishKiwi it's something I used to add to the land nav course I taught. Compasses can be falible in certain locations, or of course broken. GPS is wonderful, but batteries run out, especially when I don't remember to charge them.

Each to their own but my personal opinion and experience would be to ditch half the stuff in your webbing, Forget the hexi/mess tins and gas cooker, If youre on a patrol and cant get back to your harbour/fob wherever your bergan is then youre having cold rations, sucks but works. If youre on stag then you shouldnt be brewing up anyway :P The smoke grenades is a sensible idea though, as you point out, theres far more less important people who can be charging machine guns and bunkers :D

No, a British officer should lead from the front, never ducking for cover. Preferably brandishing a sword.

Get yourself some Altberg boots. The best ones are the Sneekers.
