I don't think guns n' roses was dethroned by grunge. Just based on old videos or statistics, guns n' roses was selling out stadiums and their use your illusion records were top. They're one of the few bands that made it out of the '80s. Grunge never dethroned Guns N Roses. They were at the top of their game and popularity when they split. Guns was 1 of the best selling bands on the planet when Nirvana was peaking.They split cuz over all kinds of internal problems didn't they?
@AmericanNope2 жыл бұрын
@@choice12ozborne maybe it is because of your age and not being around at that time but guns and roses was the IT rock band in late 80s and early 90s. then temple of the dog, stone temple pilots, nirvana, sound garden, blind Melon Pearl Jam and others came and Guns N’ Roses was just not the same status any longer. It couldn’t compete with this new sound. Looking back it wasn’t so much a knock on guns roses it was just a different sound came to the forefront. But if you were there at that time and especially being in Seattle we teenagers felt it very much was a dethroning of 80s hair metal ….which Guns N’ Roses was the king of …. But to Guns s credit they were also something much greater. Michael Jackson was also still top of the charts when nirvana came and knocked him off too. Gnr just didn’t have the same type of grimey dirty feel grunge had. And grunge was aesthetically and musically very different than gnr. That coupled with Guns N’ Roses internal issues gave a definite changing of the guard. Maybe that’s a better way to say it it than saying it was a dethroning. Guns N’ Roses has proven to have staying power (especially in the last decade) but after use your illusion came out there really wasn’t much more from gnr for the rest of the 90s. By the mid 90s no one knew what was going on with them and no one really cared as much either because a new type of rock had hit that scene.

GnR was anti hair band, anti 80s music. GnR, Soundgarden and Neil Young's Freedom and Ragged Glory albums were really the first to destroy the 1980s music scene that was hot from 1982 to 1990. I listened to a lot of local bands on mixed tapes and local CDs in the late 80s so you could hear what was coming before it exploded in 1990. If you were in Seattle in the late 80s you could hear the demise of New Wave and hair bands coming. RHCP was another band that came up in the 80s and had their own thing going on that was not grunge and not 80s sounding.
@seriously..... Жыл бұрын
I love love Love LOVE them both but the difference is i listen to an entire GnR album opposed certain songs when it comes to Nirvana. Axl is such a charismatic front man though, literally one of the best of all time and I honestly don't think there are many who can even hold a candle in that regard he was actually pretty calculated so is no surprise there is literally no matching Axl Rose.. sorry if I sound biased lol but it's probably because I am! lol.

"The Mr. Brownstone" speech wasnt just about Slash lol This is why he said "too many people in this organization dancing with..." - he meant Steven, Izzy, AND Slash. It's just Slash who took it the hardest and made the biggest fuss backstage, PLUS, Axl's imagined rivalry for the leadership role had him singling out Slash more than the others at this time. He always viewed Izzy and Steven as below him, but he saw Slash as a major force and just as big of a presence. So it played out as it did, due to insecurities about Slash's popularity and power, whether Slash cared for that shit or not. FUCK I love this band. My faves of all time, easily. \m/ GREAT piece of work here!

I was at their Use Your Illusion tour gig in Slane Castle Ireland in 1992 and fell victim to Axls tardiness. After Faith No More had finished their support set I think the crowd was waiting for 3 or 4 hours before Axl and the band appeared on stage. The crowd were rightly pissed and I've never seen so many empty paper coke cups flung into the air in one go. Apparently for much of the wait Axl was holed up in his city centre hotel. It kind of spoiled the experience for me but I remained a massive fan. I will however never go to a GnR gig again!

First off, Appetite is easily the greatest heavy rock album of the 80’s. At the time the genre was suffering from the plethora of “Hair Band” releases and was fizzling out. When this album dropped, it completely changed the game over night. Whatever came after that you can thank GNR. Now, I saw them during their run with Metallica in 92. This show was at Mile High Stadium in Denver. Metallica opened on that night and absolutely killed it. One of the best Metallica shows I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot of them. The freakn stadium was visibly bouncing, it was nuts. With the crowd on a crazy high GNR FINALLY comes out, 2 hours late. The crowd was chanting Metallica, Metallica over and over until GNR finally showed. They opened up with Welcome To The Jungle, with these giant crabs on either side of the stage. First song was insane. Problem was, Axl left. He walked off stage toward the end of the song and we didn’t see him again for 30 minutes. Duff sang, Slash sang, they did their best to cover and during their set we all started chanting, “Metallica, Metallica” again! Axl finally came back out for a couple songs and walked off again. It was a bummer for a huge GNR fan. Metallica far out showed GNR, hands down. I saw them again in Phoenix after they got back together. They were ok but didn’t come close to capturing that magic they once had. Voice was off, music was meh. It’s really unfortunate they couldn’t keep it all together. For the limited number of records they made, not counting the Spaghetti Incident or anything post band break-up, they could have made some incredible music. Mental health for Axl, drugs and drinking for the rest, Rock N Roll baby.

I've always said that if you buy a guitar, it should come with a warning which says: "BY PURCHASING THIS, YOU AGREE THAT IF YOU MAKE IT BIG, YOU'LL HAVE TO JUST PUT UP WITH A HIGHLY IRRITATING PRIME DONNA FOR A LEAD SINGER. DON'T ASK HOW OR WHY. JUST ACCEPT IT." I do want to hear the story with Steven Adler because I've heard it was the band who got him into heroin in the first place. At the same time, if you are drummer of a major band, recording for a major album, you've got to have your shit together. It doesn't matter if Matt Sorum wasn't sober, provided he could hold his shit together. That being said, Axl was right to be the sober leader of the band and pushing others to get their shit together. However, he completely lost his sense of reality for many years after that.

Spot on. I agree 1000%. I am stuck musically in the '80s and the 90s. Everything after 98 or 99 in my opinion.. not okay not everything not absolutely everything but 90% of the music that came out after the 90s is absolute shit. Every genre. What a time it was to be alive as a kid back then. I was 7 years old when appetite for destruction came out... Born in 79 I'm definitely a child of the 80s and the 90s I stood in line so many times.. every year.. between 1988 or 89 right up through like 1997 or 1998.. every single year multiple albums came out by the best bands. The grunge explosion out of seattle.. we were kids when the alternative scene blew up and the punk scene as well.. I believe that some of the best music and lyrics ever written were in the 80s and the 90s. I cannot overstate what an amazing time musically that was. The original bands of certain genres. And regarding guns and roses... It's my opinion that the first two albums appetite for destruction and lies were like a gritty hard rock kind of in your face sound.. then there was use your illusion one and two and the record company fucked us by releasing both of them on the same day as separate albums.. that was like gritty alternative style hard Rock. I don't really know what the hell was up with the spaghetti incident that was all over the fucking place pardon my language. Everything after the spaghetti incident That's not guns and roses. That's just axle with a different band using the same name. Anyway thanks for reading my rant. Stay safe and God bless 🙏🙏🔥🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸🖕🖕🏴🏴

Fascinating 👌, my goodness, can you do a part 2 ‘the wilderness years’? 👏

Shannon was a tortured soul. RIP Shannon. God bless Nico Hoon. BMs last album was called Nico. She has performed Change with BM a few times.

I've been in rehab with people JUST like this. I was like this. It's not cool, it's not fun. It's f**king tragic is what it is. These guys could play guitars and drums and sing. Besides that there is no difference.welcome to the jungle, your gonna die.

I distinctly remember in the middle 80’s, GNR was basically unknown, and opening for Motley Crue. When the tour came to our town, my BF went to see the show and the next day, all she could talk about was how the opening band put on a WAY better performance than Motley. Not long after, they blew up like a nuclear bomb.

I quit after 5 Minutes! There are really 3 Parts? 🤦♂ The beginning is poorly missing, their lady manager and how hard she worked to get the GEFFEN contract. The record Appetite wasn`s even touched for weeks......GEFFEN personally kicked MTV`s ass to lay once Welcome to the jungle... ...and so on! Thumbs DOWN! 🙄

I read this. I met a prodigy in about 1967 named Axl Rose and am trying to find answers as someone is missing and it appears to have to do with some corruption in the entertainment world. I'm using a nickname. The boy I met was a prodigy from an orphanage from another country who I met at an Expo daycare. I recalled this 2x in elementary school, then saw this Axl Rose on MTV and when I returned to the US for good after years abroad tried to learn what I could when I saw some gangs for illogical reasons were targeting my family. The book was pretty upsetting. I go for more tranquil things, but I still can't figure out why this other man is using the same name? I'm wondering how corrupt was that orphanage program. Any good feedback?
