A 1MB A500 goes up against the Sega Genesis in this side by side of Turrican 3/Mega Turrican.
Released in 1993 - Factor 5
There are some differences in the level order in both versions, so I edited it for consistency.

Amiga was an incredible machine for its time! We are talking about 1985 hardware, that could easily compete against the 16bit machines that came 5 years later.

It was a struggle to compete. How many 8way scrolling games ran at 50fps in 32 colours on the Amiga compared to those that ran at 25fps ? The Megadrive in my opinion had more powerful graphics hardware with respect to gaming.

@@SerBallister You should take a look at Jim Power at some point. Turrican 3 on Amiga was ... poor. Jim Power (and Shadow of the Beast of course) shows what you can do with parallax scrolling, it beats what we see here by far. This game does not use the potential of the Amiga at all. It's also a shame that only a few games ever used the 64 color mode for enhanced graphics.

The Amiga Version was done by KAIKO, not Factor 5
@jaycee1980
@jaycee1980 7 жыл бұрын
The Megadrive version was developed first, because at that time Commodore were in serious trouble and Factor 5 had doubts as to the future of the Amiga platform. Many developers did. Also a lot of them were fed up with the rampant piracy on the Amiga platform, where console markets suffered a lot less. The Megadrive also does have the edge over the Amiga in that it has far more hardware sprites in higher colour, and more layers of parallax in hardware. It also has the benefit of being a cartridge system, so that many megabytes of graphics data are immediately accessible. The Amiga (500+/600) only had 1MB of system RAM to work with. The Amiga version on the other hand, would have benefitted and probably kept up with the Megadrive *IF* it had been coded to use the Amiga 1200's AGA hardware and 2MB of system RAM, instead of the older Amiga ECS platform. I suspect they went with ECS so that they could maximise sales, as the A1200 was fairly new at the time. The development time on the Amiga version was fairly short too. I recall hearing that Peter Thierolf wrote most of itt as "a bet" when he heard someone say the Amiga couldn't handle the game. He really did push the ECS Amiga hardware to its limits though. The source code was leaked some time ago, and it showed some pretty tight and efficient programming

The Mega Drive (a.k.a. Genesis in US) was the finest console of its generation
@daishi5571
@daishi5571 7 жыл бұрын
The only direct comparison between the Genesis/Mega Drive and the Amiga was the same CPU family 68000. The Amiga is in no way a stripped down Genesis if anything it would be the other way around as the Amiga is a full blown computer. How many Genesis systems were used by NASA, were in the production of TV shows, ran businesses with any number of productivity software the list goes on but the Genesis is known for "Games" and yes even the original Amiga A1000 was 60Hz capable and later AGA models were capable of even higher refresh. The reason many games were released at 50Hz was the Amiga was popular in England that uses 50Hz PAL on TV so many games were aimed at that market. BTW PAL has a higher resolution than NTSC 60Hz also the Genesis is also restricted to 50Hz on PAL. Amiga A1000 released in 85 was an absolute beast of a computer and at $1300 it was good value compared to PC's of the time which were often 2-3 thousand. It offered better sound and video than any comparable off the shelf PC of the time, and The OS was also years ahead of the competition (comparing Mac or PC to the Amiga at the time is laughable) and when the A500 was released in 87 bringing the price down and in to more homes it was still far ahead of the pack. The Amiga doesn't require a Z80 processor for the sounds as the sound chip "Paula" is a custom designed (not some bought off the shelf chip used in the genesis) that is already a co-processor. So when you ask why do Amiga fanboys think the hardware is more powerful than God it's because it was by far the best all-around computer of the time and it also played great games! not just games.

+daishi5571 Just to know, who are you talking to? Since a lot of what you said doesn't make sense regarding psyance's comment not to mention some funny bits such as "and it also played great games! not just games", do you imply that the Amiga has better games that the Mega Drive?! That it has better action games than Shinobi III or Alien Soldier? Better shoot 'em ups than Thunder Force III or IV? Better beat 'em ups than Streets of Rage trilogy? Better puzzle games than Columns III or Puyo Puyo? etc etc. ps: I'm both a Mega Drive and Amiga fan but lol, the amount of bullshit that most Amiga fanboys tend to spout out, quite sad as I have hard times to find what I could consider "cool Amiga fans" even if fortunately there are exceptions such as Zeusdaz.

What was said amongst other things no longer in the post, that the "Amiga was a stripped down MD/Gen" so you can see why I replied (I like accuracy) ask psyance ;-) "and it also played great games! not just games" so you liked that :-) And no I was not comparing it to any specific games on the MD/Gen which was a great game machine, I was just saying that the Amiga also had some great games on top of being a great productive computer. I like these comparisons of games but sometimes it requires context. I am an Amiga fan, there are other systems I like, but the Amiga was the 1st system that blew me away (come on preemptive multitasking on a desktop in the 80's) For some good Amiga fan channels (none are just Amiga) take a look at: Dan Wood - kookytech.net mjnurney Modern Vintage Gamer EDIT- Corrected post as I was contacted by psyance about incorrect information.

An original Amiga-Turrican would have been better than a conversion. The (technically) best Amiga games were developed on it by exploring and pushing the boundaries of the Amiga. This and the decision to aim for a 512kb ram / 1 disk requirement is the reason, that many players were sort of disappointed about the Amiga version. But at that time we were happy about every class A title.

Sonically, the Amiga version is way ahead making the Sega machine sound like a child's bleeping machine. I'll have to prefer the Amiga version overall, the Megadrive's visual advantage is minimal. The Amiga's musical advantage is huge.

Turrican 3/Mega Turrican was developed on Sega Genesis/Megadrive as the main platform, and then it was ported on the Amiga, so it's natural that this game looks better on the console (being that the Genesis hardware is much more oriented to videogames developing). There are some details from the Genesis version that are simply impossible to make on the Amiga (OCS/ECS) without losing colors, parallax or other things. The music of Chris Huelsback, as usual, is great in both the platforms... In many levels I prefer the Amiga musics, but there are some levels where the Genesis version sounds a little better to me. Anyway I always thought that Turrican 3 graphics were "strange" (on the Genesis version too), with overabundance of "acid" colors, and that they were less detailed and polished compared to Turrican 2. The gameplay too was less variegated (no more shoot'em up levels in Turrican 3) and I remember that Turrican 2 was much longer to complete. Overall I think that Turrican 3 was a decent game, but the 2 will always remain the "top" in the series.

+malducci Maybe you like better the graphic style of Turrican 3, but the Amiga version, being a quick port from the Megadrive, suffers from a graphics standpoint. Turrican 2 is longer, a little tougher, more varied and, generally speaking, much more polished (compared to the Amiga version of Turrican 3), because it was developed on the Amiga as the main platform (so, no loss of colors, animations and other details).

+electrodarman Yes, there weren't many differences. I think the bigger difference is in the level on the clouds, where on the Megadrive version the aircrafts platforms sometimes are moving when the player jump on them, where in the Amiga version they don't. Another big difference is in the monochromatic foregrounds and monochromatic colours of the enemies in some levels with parallax scrolling (in the Amiga version). Great comparison, visually the MD wins this pretty easily, it has more colours and more animations with more parallax and on a slightly larger playfield. The Amiga is the port but they could have done a better job, they seem to cut a few corners. When Turrican 3 came out I was not that impressed with it after Turrican 2, to me it had lost that polish. The music is so close yet hugely different, I can't pick a winner. Some tunes sound better on Amiga and others better on MD. Amiga has more rounded bass and the softer tones are far better, MD has more punch with certain instruments and a more upbeat lively feel to it. Sound effects are better on Amiga as usual but not too bad for MD, usually the MD has horrible sound effects to my ear. Gameplay is pretty similar but I prefer the MD version overall. As far as Turrican games go, Turrican 2 on the Amiga is the best of all versions including any C64, MD, Snes and Windows version in my opinion.

They kind of had to cut corners, an independently-made Turrican 3 for Amiga was in the works under Kaiko before that company went under, and only one remaining programmer for that version was around to work with Factor 5 in turning that into a port for the Amiga due to contract changes. The game was made for the Genesis/Mega Drive from the ground-up but the Amiga version launched first due to contractual obligations while the GS/MD version sat for a while.

If you've played any of the Turrican games and thought they were great my advice would be to play the trilogy through on both systems - the A500 & genesis as there is enough of a difference in level layout between both platforms to make it worth while in my opinion. The A500 trilogy can be downloaded from the Company website and has graphic filters, widescreen, custom button layouts & save states and is pretty excellent. Its a shame the series doesn't receive more recognition I always thought it wiped the floor with all those SNES titles that Nintendo fanboys always bang on about.

The amiga version definitely sounds a bit more organic, though, so to speak. I've never really liked how cheap and tinny the Genesis' 2612 sounds compared to the 2151 and 2610. It's amazing how fucking awesome the Amiga intro music sounds compared to the rest of the music in the game. I don't know why, but the intro music blows away every other piece in the game. On the Mega Drive original, on the other hand, it's the music of all the levels that is clearly superior to its intro music. Not that the intro music is bad, it's it's incredible, it's just not AS good; a lot simpler than the rest of the music in the game. It's funny, because the Mega Drive's intro tune is clearly closer to the themes of Turrican 1 and 2, while the Amiga version is this ultra awesome remix. That being said, I wish the rest of the music in the Amiga port sounded as good. It just seems that it's trying in vain to sound like the Genesis version at certain points, when it should have tried to be better with what the AMIGA was good at. And we KNOW the Amiga is good at music. The Genesis/Mega Drive version on the other hand...holy shit. One of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I get such chills. And no, the SNES version doesn't sound better. At most it sounds just as good, with a certain SNES charm, but it clearly doesn't take advantage of the hardware like Mega Turrican takes advantage of the Mega Drive hardware, and better sounding SNES games like the Final Fantasy and Donkey Kong Country series take advantage of the SNES hardware.

Yeah, when Factor 5 was discussing development they decided to take things in a bit of a different direction for Mega Turrican and go for a mix between Japanese style linear stages and the exploration-based levels in Turrican 1 and 2. The result wasn't bad at all, but it still doesn't manage to outshine the first two games.

sega Genesis hardware advantage over amiga was its multicolour dual playfield mode and more hardware sprites.While Amiga has dual playfield mode it can use only 8 colours in each playfield (15 total) per line, while Genesis can have 16 colours in background and i think 64 if frontplane. This dual playfield mode slows down cpu by 50% in display time, so many developers stick to normal single playfield 32colour mode.However if you are smart enough and know the hardware you can create amazing multicolour dual, three or even 4 playfield games like Jim Power, Shadow of the Beast and more on Amiga.This game looks like some better programmer took chargé in creating later levels, hence they look much better and similar to Genesis, however still software can not fix all limitations of hardware.In sound depertment i think sampled sound of Amiga wins, however in this video they sound inferior to reality and incorrectly shows amiga in worse light that it should.

Is it just me, but the MD version sounds so much better, even through my cheap PC speakers! The Amiga is tinny with hardly any bass. Modding an old PC powersupply to support the CD,Harddisk and 040 in the miggi was one of my biggest explorations into that matter. :D Building a PC.No problemo. But soldering? I think I was not ready for the job just for the lack of deeper knowledge.Maybe reattaching a lose cable but that was it. I think they should teach electronics and soldering in every school on the planet. Just like math or biology.Not just as a sidenote in physics. It became part of our culture and our evolution. But most people could not even explain how a lightbulb works. Take away the smartphones and other neat gadgets... So why are whe keept stupid? Only some nerds and people in the industry know that everyone could build his own system from scatch. In theory. What bad games in the end, Turrican 3 wasn't even involved with Manfred since 2 came out, after completing 2 he ended up porting Turrican 1 by himself on the NES as Super Turrican, after finishing that game he would create Rendering Ranger R2 which went through a long development cycle, after completing that he would make Turrican 3-D, which was fucking cancelled because TH-Q, the last biggest project he would make was Katakis 2 or 3-D for the game boy color, again was cancelled and from that point he never really directed any games he only assisted in developing them in small amounts.

@@ryzmaker11 ok. You're making a confusion with a computer and a gaming console. You can actually make a Megadrive game on the Amiga, not the contrary. Check the price of a MacIntosh in late 80's, yet it was far less powerful than the most basic Amiga in the gaming department, let alone a Megadrive. Are you really comparing the price of a home computer with a 68020 and 2Mb of Ram with the Megadrive back then ? How does Deluxe Paint, Briliance or Protracker works on the Megadrive ? As for the games, at that time, most of the games were primarly designed for the stronger and more profitable console market. Amiga games were just mostly port of games made around the specificities of the MD, not around the Amiga ones.

@@matieucastel835 no confusion and I'll repeat exactly what I've just said to someone else about this: "the argument that "computers are better because I can also do work or other stuff with those" is utterly pointless. a game console is a game console and should only be compared with computers on the criterias they have in common not to mention that computers are more expensive on average making that argument even more pointless because computers don't "offer far more value" but just the aditional value that you paid for" and most amiga games can be made on mega drive except better due to the more powerful hardware. there are just a few exceptions, mostly 3D games, where the amiga and ST excel impressively well but even those - robocop 3 or world circuit for example - could be done on mega drive almost as good if not as good at all

@@matieucastel835 I'm comparing everything relevant: release dates, prices and capabilities the amiga was primarily designed with gaming in mind and what the different amiga models offered for their respective time and price is not more than what the mega drive offered at various points again: - amiga 500 = 1987 = $700 - mega drive = 1988 = $190 - amiga 1200 = 1992 = $600 and by that point the mega drive cost only $100 so: - amiga 500 vs mega drive => the amiga has the additional functionalities of a computer but the mega drive is more powerful for gaming and also has better controller with more action buttons and better media (cartridges > floppies) - mega drive vs amiga 1200 => both are technically about tied and the other criterias remain the same the point is that taking only one factor into consideration (release date or price) is meaningless in the grand scheme of things BTW by 1991 mega drive owners could invest into a mega-CD. that's an additional $300 but this offered many new capabilities (access to CD media; ASIC scaling/rotation chip; 8 PCM channels, etc.)

The Genesis version's graphics and animations are clearly better. But I like the sound better on the Amiga. Who claim that Amiga's music is dull , they don't consider that Amiga plays digital sound samples. There's a filter that the developer either turn on or not. Some turned on this filter , so that the music will not be annoying in the long run , it stays comfortly in the background . This works well . On the other hand , the voice of Genesis is synthesized , it comes directly from the sound chip which is therefore clearer and sharper than the digitized samples . Synthesizer sound cannot compete with digitalized samples that have been produced by digitizing famous musical keyboards or acoustic instruments , or noises from the real life . So in fact these aren't comparable and both have advantages and disadvantages . Of course , whoever likes it better , it's everyone's own decision . While I like the chip music too ( especially from the C64 and the Genesis) , I prefer the digitized music which is more various , more real life than the synth music. The Genesis sounds clearer, yes. But this is not the sound of Chris Hülsbeck's synthesizer, what you hear in the Amiga version. 👍 My decision: It is worth to play through both versions!

I admit that the musics sound better on the Amiga, but on some levels I prefer on Mega Drive, like the last one in the video. Mega Drive victory then, but the Amiga 500 is really impressive for a machine from 1985. The MD is from october 1988. There's a more equivalent console in visual rendering, it's the PC Engine. It was released 2 years later in 1987. Well done for the Amiga. Then you talk about visuals (some boss presentations etc) but you disregard the much morr vivid and clear gfx on the Amiga because.... reasons... presentation-wise amiga IS better (clean graphics, more colour and you can actually tell what each eny is supposed to be, instead if a pile of pixels of the c64), sound wise Amiga IS better if not only for the fact you can have sfx and music at the same time, and of course soundtrack is light years ahead of the c64 (which i really respect for the sid chip) as far as sound wuality is concerned. As for liking it more or not it is a totally subjective opinion, but technically speaking the amiga wipes the floor with the c64 version.
