Even with a lot of skill in guitar, it still is very difficult to play without frets, and most of the skill lies in having an ear for pitch, so props to this guy for being able to do this.

They just know by trial and error, and then your body and mind begins to remember where to go to find the right note. It's amazing as hell to me. You also see it on violins, cellos, contrabasses and trombones for example.

See the white circles on the left guitarists neck? They're called "Guide dots". A few of those remain on the high end of the neck in the guitarists line of sight. Markers for frets. I played a fretless which compensated by having a larger amount of markers. But it still takes time finding that perfect note. Vibrato does help with masking it at first, but it has nothing to do with the intonation. Hope that helps!

You can buy beveled, chromed glass at Lowes and have them size it for you. You use silicon glue to adhere it and you have to sand off the radius of the neck. Costs about $30 and done well, can perform amazing. Raw wood has almost no sustain in the high register so you have to use a lot of compression for it to sound decent.

We've seen a few people do this and it's a great way to experiment with the fretless concept and see if it's for you. We can't recommend the Vigier enough though as we've found that the wooden board kills the sustain and tone more.

The frets just allow you to be accurate on your notes and do so easily. Think bass guitar vs you're regular stand up fretless bass(don't know what the correct term might be, but what you might see in a jazz band) where you have to know where each note is on the neck.

Sometimes (at least in fretless bass) there is a mark on the side of the fretboard, another way to go is to learn the fretboard by "positions" (usually done for upright bass and such).

That is VERY impressive. Theanthill is right....the actual pitch on guitar is where the string hits the fret so you'd have to nail that spot EVERY time. I love the cross between a standard rock sound and a slide guitar tone.

I've just completed my own, I an old epiphone I got for free, but the important bit is that I used a thick epoxy coating on the fretboard, like you would finish a table with, that dries extremely hard and gives you more sustain than just wood, although it's still not quite as nice as the Vigier metallic fingerboard ;).

I made my own fretless guitar by removing the frets from the second cheapest guitar I could find (the cheapest needed new electronics), filling the slots with epoxy, then sanding and lacquering the fingerboard. Total cost, including tools to do it, was about $120. If you google how to make a fretless guitar you will find lots of useful resources.

Which is why he was using vibrato during the runs? Just like any instrument without a definite location to press/pluck in order to make a note (violin, viola, cello, bass, trombone are the only ones coming to mind right now), along with practice comes intonation. I played violin for 6 years. You start to learn with tape and when your skill improves the tape comes off.

@Metalborn69 Hi, It would mess your guitar up - you'll be left with grooves in the wood where you frets would sit. We wouldn't advise doing that. As for hitting a bad note of course!

Muscle memory. After a great deal of practice, you just know where to place your fingers. When I started playing the violin, we used bits of pinstriping tape to mark the common positions and took them off once we had the feel for it.

Its very distinct once you listen to it a couple of times, if it helps compare the beginning of the vid to when Mike was soloing, its hard to put into words but the combination of thicker strings, metal alloy neck, and slide playing instead of using the frets as a lower end point for the vibrating of the string just gives off this unique, intriguing sound.

@Jeremyvp They probably are, but the thing about fretless guitars is that if you're going to bend, you have to keep your finger at the same place on the string when bending. Moving it just the slightest bit will make your bend go slightly out of tune.

You can actually make one believe it of not, I have a friend who took a cheap electric and just pulled the frets out and put some filler in the slots, it's a LOT cheaper than £1000s for a vigier - though those metallic fretboards are great!

Yeah,I made one that is a Jackson Rhoads body with a Yamaha neck that I de-fretted and filed the nut down on,it's pretty sick.Sounds pretty cool if you use a killswitch in unison with the fretless neck, but you HAVE to get flatwound strings for it 'cause regular strings will tear up the fretboard, wood or metal.

I actually made one myself. I took a soldering iron, heated the frets, and took em off. There are tools you can use to do it safely though.... but mine turned out great. Sanded the neck and it's as smooth as a table surface. It's great. You'll have to set up the guitar so the strings are a bit lower on the fretboard though, and probably sand down the (bottom of) nut and redo the intonation and adjust the truss rodd

@FrozenSkyes I think the point was that musicians of other stringed instruments (violin, cello, lute, etc.) have always been required to play notes accurately without the help of frets, so I doubt they would be dumbfounded by this (whether they should or not is a different argument).
