I have had the pleasure to meet this guy!! I did a guitar course in Cornwall and he came down to do a master class! He playing this song and "Waves" to us, I now have a signed copy of "Erotic Cakes", amazingly nice bloke and not bad for a self taught guitarist! (hint the UNDERSTATEMENT!) amazing bloke! Taught me loads!

I can't fucking believe that he nailed the tapping lick at 01:55. Had I attempted that live it would've sounded like a dog taking a dump. Guthrie, you truly are God.

Man, I really dig seeing these live versions of the tunes. I'm paying attention to the lead lines so often when I'm listening to the studio versions that I forget how funky the rhythm guitar is. Oh, and the drums and bass.

...the reason I find it dull is that I prefer something that you'd get up and rock to rather than sit back and appreciate. just personal preference really. and i'd get up and rock to guthrie govan any day! hes the man

There are many paths to get there and the journey is the most fun part. I'm a piano player fighting the same tendencies. A good way to get going would be to intensely practice your altered scales and start getting that hammered into your subconscious. Put that together with a strong focus on chord substitution and you'll find your ear opening new avenues up to you.
@roho_guitar14 жыл бұрын
probably the best performance of this song by him.

@69cohonas12 жыл бұрын
that is true, i am a greg fan to, but i think that one of the great things about guthrie is not only his technique, but his understanding of rythm, which very difficult in general, but then try and imagine how it is in his shoes.
@FaizalJiwaMusic13 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard him play the same thing twice... ever! Every time he plays this song, it's completely different. It's ALL improvised. Holy crap.
@wonekawa15 жыл бұрын
The real deal! Thanks for posting this sir!
@Gmanrushfan15 жыл бұрын
Ha ha...okay... you win. I am a huge Guthrie follower/fan by the way.
@Gregorypeckory15 жыл бұрын
The miracle is dedication, good practice habits (focus on improvement goals, rather than playing what you've already mastered), periodic reflective self-examination, a little guidance now and then, jamming, etc. Don't be too hard on yourself; if you're improving, that's half the battle. Playing should be fun, even though you're never as good as you want to be.

This guy is so great!
@thegreatgarry15 жыл бұрын
yeah... Guthrie is capable in all kinds of music style just listen to his whole album
@dennoow15 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Both of them are on the same extremely high level and here it doesn't matter that Guthrie can pick faster or Greg's tapping is more awesome. It's all inferior to the wonderfull music they create and their endless source of creativity in improvisation. I heard that solo, very very pretty! GH's latest album "Sound proof" features a song called "Child's play", one of the most exciting solo's I've heard in my life! Can't wait untill Govan's new album comes out too!!

I think the important thing to remember, love or hate, is that Guthrie is in guitar magazines, and putting out albums and playing shows for people that love him. and you are on youtube arguing.
@dougsteeleguitar15 жыл бұрын
I think that thing he does at :20 (then giggling afterwards) does it for me. He's the new great guitarist, an insane benchmark.
@simms7515 жыл бұрын
I believe he now runs workshops etc.. But back in the day I used to go along to his house in Chelmsford (when he still lived with his parents) up to his bedroom and just learnt - If I remember correctly in the space of only two lessons he completely redefined the way I played and learnt guitar over the previous 3 years. I still have the tab exercises he wrote out for me in my kitbag. I think he charged me about £10 an hour. LOL. I haven`t seen him in about 3 years now. Lovely fella though.

@dennoow15 жыл бұрын
"Joker's wild", "Dance", "Stringed sanity" and "Direct injection" are other insane solo's by master Greg. I favour him too, his choice of notes and phrasing next to his groove and incredible technique are just exactly the way I want to play if I was that good! Both seem to be able to play anything that comes to mind, and that's why the're technically that good, what sets them apart is their creativity with those licks.
@LJLiveLV12 жыл бұрын
soo awesome
@proteoid15 жыл бұрын
I agree Dennoow :P Guthrie and Greg Howe are equally amazing. Different styles, but both are musical genuises. The music they create is what matters. I personally favour Greg because he just has that awesome groove - its infectious, and he seems to be able to combine several techniques effortlessly. You're Right - Child's Play has an unbelievably awesome solo, but one of my personal faves from Greg is on 'Bottom Line'. 'Found Unwound' also has some of the best playing I've ever heard.

No problem; The advice is as much for myself as you. Personally, I take comfort in knowing there are players like Bill Frisell, Adrian Belew, and John Stowell, who blow me away with their ideas without having super speed (which I'm not really built for). They remind me that you can make exciting music without having Holdsworth/McLaughlin/Guthrie speed chops. (Not that I'm remotely as good as those guys; but it seems more attainable; and just as musically valid.)
@francisco44415 жыл бұрын
for all of you asking. I think he is using an EHX Bassballs effect. I have it n is very similar to his tone. Is not a wah wah is an envelope filter btw
@martinisbutik13 жыл бұрын
@xstevenguitarx 1. Tone is in the fingers. You gotta be Guthrie. 2. Top of the line Cornford Amp 3. High end Guitar 4. Plenty of mids, compression and just enough gain so it slightly overdrives
@DeadSton316 жыл бұрын
Guthrie Govan es un genio !
@TheAdamWallace14 жыл бұрын
@xstevenguitarx I think by tight you're describing the sound compression imparts on the sound. A "tight" tone is achieved by using a compressor. It evens out the level difference between highs and lows and makes picking a lot more even and tight. A good, and not too expensive, compression pedal is the BOSS compression pedal...it's blue.

Amazing dude!
@RandyLott13 жыл бұрын
@Tzachi076S Yes, strumming is tighter due to more resistance. Light picks get floppy and kind of drag over the string.
