The last time I saw Guy. He had a rough time physically making it to the stage that afternoon, but was as stunning as ever.

"Moldy box of vanilla wafers"...just an amazing lyric and beautifully captures the mundane stuff we ditch when we move. It also represents a period in time when basically every small town house had a box of 'Nilla Wafers in the cupboard...but it would likely have been out of place in LA...just like the narrator. This is the kind of thing that makes Guy Clark amazing....even apparently trivial lyrics can mean a great deal.

Great song! Great songwriter and performer. I first heard this song sung by Jerry Jeff Walker on his album by the same name back in the mid 70s when my wife and I were living just south of LA in Orange County.

I live in South Carolina now but it sure makes me miss Texas and those days...….Thanks Guy for what you did. Will always love you.

Guy represented a change from the previous traditional Nashville music scene that was more commercial with complete music bands. I love Merle, Marty, Johnny and George who utilized a full music set on their recording and shows. But I respect how Guy and Townes stripped the sound to a few guitars with vocals. Guy and Townes are true geniuses.

I have only one explanation for why there are so few comments here. Not much left to say,Guy's songs somehow contained just about everything worth saying.

New to Guy Clark. Andrew Combs mentioned to me and my wife that Guy was an influence on Andrew's wonderful music. I am a die hard Marty Robbins fan. Would have been cool if Guy and Marty collaborated on some music. Very different personalities but both great guys.

@@stujenksjr Cool that this song mentions Susanna. Marty mentions Mari (his wife) in Devil Woman. He also uses Janet (his daughter's name) in This Much a Man. Of course My Woman, My Woman, My wife was testimony to his love for Marizona.
