@@verycool6022 I moved to Au since 14 and over the last 15 years China has opened up so much. if you do pay attention to the hk protest and compare how mainstream and minor media report the event very differently. you will know why the govt needs to block these news. the western world is trying so hard to stirrup shit- remember english is the primary language used and if they want to say shit about a non-english country. they will always win. also note there are 1.6 billion people in China. if 5% decide to pursue the hk style ""democracy"", people will live in pain. look at what they did to hk. I get your point about letting people choose what they want to watch, as I used to think the same. after so many years I come to realisation how precious stability and safety is to people, far more valuable than the so called freedom of speech. China has its own road of development and I'm pretty sure the govt will loose the control when the people are ready. I appreciate if people will stop pointing fingers about how Chinese govt run the country. no one has more right to speak than Chinese themselves. sometimes I feel the western world is trying to take the shelter and food away from Chinese and force them to eat "freedom of speech".. they are really not that interested.

What does the scroll in back of you-on your left-say and show? LOVE that huge vase and the painting behind you! I have a smaller one that looks similar to the one in back of you. A young man who had been my first tutor, mainly working on the language with me-sent me a bunch of painting and calligraphy supplies he got from a family friend in Guangzhou last fall. He also sent me a “book” of paintings and scrolls he said they often use in the same way as copy books for calligraphy. Although I have high aspirations, right now I’m still working on my bamboo and sleeping kitty paintings. (That I don’t think are very good but because I stamped them with my new seals, some friends thought they were purchased & done by “professionals”. 😂). Ps, your wife is very beautiful, 😊

The picture behind me is a needle point Weifang did. It took her 6 hours a day for 3 years to complete. Talk about persistence. The scroll is simply a calendar and the big vase came from a hotel that went out of business.

Gweilo 60 Your wife is extremely talented AND patient! Lol, I would NEVER have the patience and focus to do that! One reason I’m doing calligraphy and CPB is a sort of therapy for my ADD; plus, as my health problems got worse, I had a harder time trying to meditate. Putting some old Chinese flute music on and devoting several hours to calligraphy (or painting), have enabled me to calm down, focus and disappear into the zone whilst also working on my characters. Well, when my cat allows me to anyways. I just spent 30 minutes chasing her and my new calligraphy brush that she swiped off my table.... 🙄😸

I live in China. I have never seen anyone smoking in public for years. Nowadays, if a person smokes say in the elevator, he/she will be frowned upon. I don't know when this video was made, many many years ago, perhaps you can see people throwing garbage wherever you want. But nowadays, it's a rare thing to see people throwing garbage everywhere. Nowadays in Shanghai, the streets are so clean that stray dog are gonna have nothing to eat because garbage are sorted. Yeah, in China, we think it's cool to have high marks, to be good in academic domains, it's cool to be polite, respectful and courteous due to our culture and history. In ancient China, the only way to prosper your family or have a good future was to be public officials. The government officials were elected only by their academic performance. It's normal that people from different cultures exercise differently. I think old women like dancing in public because it's a kill-time for them to make friends and gather. It's the same as westerners like gathering in an open area, drinking beers, chatting, socializing. Nowadays, more and more young people exercise in gyms, riding shared bike. I think culture is shaped by everything, such as geography, climate, history and philosophy.

very interesting. Just one thing, China is very different from one city to another. Say, blue and pink definitely has its gender connotation in China. Maybe not as evidently everywhere, but it definitely is gender-associated. Then, The social part is spot-on. In general chinese are more community life-oriented. But with the morning alcohol, I can tell you it is really there. I am a Chinese from Fujian province.

I don’t agree with you when you say that the differences are due to “China being blocked by the Great Wall for a few decades” Chinese culture has been developing within itself for thousands of years, longer than any other culture, and it’s not easily affected by other cultures simply because we believe it’s more advanced, we take in what is good and ignore the bad. If you take the differences you stated in this video to Hong Kong or Taiwan, you’ll see they are also there, despite the fact that these two Chinese places were quite open to the rest of the world compared to mainland China.

Chicken soup is for recovering, not for cure in China. When we are sick, usually we eat food that is easy to digest like congee. And it depend on which symptom you have too. You have different type of food for different type of sickness. Chinese believe every food have curing properties and the health and well being depending on the balancing of the food. In Chinese medicine term, there are ‘hot’, ‘cold’, ‘warm’ and ‘wet’ food. I am not an expert but generally speaking, eat a lot of the ‘hot’ food will give you inflammation or pimple , eat a lot of ‘cold’ food will give you diara. The warm food will generally ‘warm’ you stomach. The ‘wet’ food will give you pimple or blisters. So orange is cold, mandarin is hot, watermelon is cold, lychee is hot, mango is hot, ginger is warm, crab is wet, rice is neutral and so on. So you suppose to balance you body with the food you ate.

we should not litter in public place, I know. young genenerations will do bette and better with education and sorts, but we don't so critize the people who do so much, because sometimes we just not educated that thingy. Dont be so harsh and judge. Dont assume people are just intending do harm and do bad. Especially we respect the elder, teacher, master etc. when they do inapproprate things we even more delicate, that's the respect need to pay. But could be addressed through education and then policy etc. things could be improved. I said my to my mom and dad dont litter, you know when I graduate in a city (then become an untouchy goody goody as they call me), but sometimes they litter anyway conciously or unconciously, I dont say a word again or think bad of them, they are good people I know. Most Europeans for the 500 hundred years have taken the mantle of world hegemony and assume they would serve as the standards for the future world. It s a form of superiority complex. For China with its culture dating back 5000 thousand years, the West are parvenus. It is amusing. For deeper understanding of China, one must not only study the language but her culture, customs and history. To be fair Gweilo 60 did make some valid observations but the interpretations are shallow.

Your wife likely does not know why you should not eat chicken soup, she just knows the rule. I hope that everybody understands I do not intend to offend anyone. I think Westerners like Canadian are better educated about personal responsibility for community. I think maybe 20 years later in big cities of China few people will let their dog poop in the streets. Exactly Shanghai is a good example, if you have the opportunity to visit different city, it will be a good video to make comparison between different cities. Cities in China don't develope balanced like west cities, we have a much shorter modern history, we need time.

Pink is the colour of the inside of my mother and I shall never return to her murky womb which extinguishes, coddles and transmutes the hero within. Blue is pointed out by your father's finger as a sea's/sky's horizon of anticipation for exploration and glory, nothing more steadfast and masculine then that. Who knows what is genuine cultural thought as the slate was wiped clean during the cultural revolution quite recently. Some of their cultural thought might have just been conjured up by their government since the 50s as part of urban legends, to render them compliant.

Chinese have a shame based culture where mistakes and apologizing is bad. In the West on the quest for progress mistakes will be made and apologizing is usually easy. Without making mistakes, daring to do new things no progress can be made and no innovation is possible. Shame based cultures are weak. The quicker they get rid of it the better. The Confucian value of hierarchies are always being challenged by new technology, competition, changing values and state policy and support. In a rapidly changing world remaining static is not an option.

Your interpretation of Chinese culture origin is totally wrong. History of Chinese culture dated thousands of years ago and without break, not like Western culture.

You have been in China for 14 years but you still don't really understand the culture there. I can point out so many misunderstanding of the Chinese culture and tradition that you have in your video but I won't do that here. After all you are friendly to China and the people as well. My only suggestion is that you can try to learn the culture not just from what you see but also from doing a lot of readings, that being said, learn the language and start picking up some history books written by ancient Chinese authors. By the way, in you video you said the great wall stopped the Chinesr from the west or the outside world, that is wrong. The great wall was a defensive line for ancient China to keep those horsemen from the north to invage the interior China, but it never ever stopped the Chinese people from interacting with the west or the other parts of the world. Still, I think at least you are trying to undetstand this great civilization, while some others who usually knows nothing about the country, the people and the culture and refuses to learn about it, and just starts to tell the Chinese how to live or what to do. For this reason I will give you a good thumb up. Cheers.

the great wall he meant is the wall that seperates china and the rest of the world, like, you can't get into hk or hk can't get into mainland china.

this guy should at least know the fact that most asian countries' cultures are deeply influenced by chinese culture, we always know what the world is going on, we discovered the land of america before Columbus, what we are different from you is that we don't shove our culture down your throat, we don't force you to practice what we practice, that's the root difference between chinese way of thinking and Christianity.

It's complicate thing but please do not mention all cultures in western world are same. They are not all like Americans or Canadians. I myself live in Canada but still feels little weird but meet french people outside Canada, they are much more comfortable.

By the way, congrats for quitting smoking. As a non-smoker, I have no real clue about how hard it is to quit but I know the challenge exists. You seem not to have gained weight after quitting. It is a pity that Chinese women are smoking more than before according to what you say.

The swords are made for exercise. If you think it is dangerous, then you should consider how air hammer is commonly used in the west. As for colour thing, you always see and being limited to your values. If you ever thing further, you would not have made those comments. From the way, the sentences are structured and the words, and facial expressions, obviously you don't respect Chinese and their cultures. In a similar way, you have shown your upbringing, your values. With those, you are being judged

Actually the worship of toughness and ignorance is irrational. Chinese learned that science and technology is the most powerful thing in the world, in a hard way. So there is no one looking down upon someone who is more intelligent and has more advanced technology.

Now the Japanese is more advance that China, Donald Trump told China what to do about North Korea like a boss! you don't see China is a little backward?
