Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a Breton song from Brittany, France. Often misinterpreted as a drinking song, the lyrics are actually from an old war chant about the Bretons raiding the French and taking their wine, whose taste they preferred to that of their apple or honey-based drinks. I arranged this in modern folk Breton style with a chord progression, a fiddle, the bombarde instrument, and a bagpipe. Lyrics in Breton: Gwell eo gwin gwenn barr Na mouar ! Gwell eo gwin gwenn barr Tan ! tan ! dir ! o! dir ! tan ! tan ! dir ha tan ! Tann ! tann ! tir ha tonn ! tonn ! tann ! tir ha tir ha tann ! Gwell eo gwin a lufr O ! na kufr Gwell eo gwin a lufr Tan ! tan !... Gwell eo gwin ar Gall Nag aval Gwell eo gwin ar Gall Tan ! tan !… Gall, d’id, kef ha deil D’id pez-teil ! Gall, d’id, kef ha deil Tan ! tan !… Gwin gwenn, d’id, Breton A galon ! Gwin gwenn, d’id, Breton Tan ! tan !… Gwin ha goad a red Enn gefred ; Gwin ha goad a red Tan ! tan !… Gwin gwenn ha goad ruz Ha goad druz ; Gwin gwenn ha goad ruz Tan ! tan !… Goad ruz ha gwin gwenn Eunn aouen ! Goad ruz ha gwin gwenn Tan ! tan !… Goad ar C’hallaoued Eo a red ; Goad ar C’hallaoued Tan ! tan !… Goad ha gwin eviz Er gwall vriz ; Goad ha gwin eviz Tan ! tan !… Gwin ha goad a vev Neb a ev ; Gwin ha goad a vev Tan ! tan ! ... English translation: Better white grape wine so ripe! Fire fire, steel oh steel, fire, fire, steel and fire! Oak, oak, earth and waves, earth and earth and oak! Better the new wine, Than mead. Better sparkling wine, Than mead, Better shining wine. Better is the French wine, Red blood and white wine. It's Frenchmen's blood that flows, It's Frenchmen's blood! I drank wine and blood, In the savage battle, I drank wine and blood, Blood and wine nourish, Whosoever drink them, Blood, wine and dance, For you O sun, Blood, wine and dance, And dance and song, O wine, And dance and song! Dance of the sword, In circle, Dance of the sword!

The song opening with, "wine is better than mead" (which I agree with); Those are already fighting words. The violence that follows is, both, welcome and unavoidable.

Farya you should do a song in cornish, its a beautiful yet endangered language, very close to breton
@BabaBugman17 күн бұрын
Well, Cornish is already a dead language (not even in danger). There is revival, but the langage lost a lot in the battle and had to reused Breton words in order to recreate it. Unfortunately, Breton follows a close path.

One of the oldest chants recorded by the Barzhaz Breizh dating from around the Carolingian Empire. Bretons(Britons who got exiled from Britain during the anglosaxon invasion) loved grape wine, but as they coudn't grow grapes they did what they knew the best: take it by force of arms.
@lysanamcmillan797210 ай бұрын
The Britons you mention ought to be noted as having been specifically people from Cornwall and Devon. This is why Breton is closer to Cornish than either is to Welsh while all three are still classified as Brythonic Celtic languages.

@Simsowizard You can google Brittany and discover it. Celtic languages and cultures are quite different (even if related). Welsh (Wales - UK), Cornish (Cornwall - Uk) and Breton (Brittany- France) are very close, while Irish and Scottish Gaelic are another family of Celtic languages.

Great song as always! I own a baglama (Long neck) and have trying to figure out how to play your song "Hikanatoi". Do you have the tabs/notes posted anywhere, or if not would you be able to give any pointers? All I know so far from listening is that It's In the Hijaz scale (I think) and I'm assuming AGD tuning. Thanks again for so many great songs, God Bless! 🙏☦
@faryafaraji10 ай бұрын
I can't read or write any kind of notation myself so unfortunately there's no tabs or notes, but to help as best I can: The scale is what we'd call the Harmonic Minor in Western terminology; so the first tetrachord (four notes) is that of the minor scale, and the last four are indeed that of Hijazkar. The tuning on that song is A-E-A, and I only use the main string course, the lowest one closest to the knee, to play the melody. Hope it helps!

Masterpiece! So question: Is this how Breton music has sounded like independent of other "Celtic" music or is this an imitation of how clearly influenced by the Irish Breton music can be?
@faryafaraji10 ай бұрын
I'd say the fiddle and the way it's played is definitely a more recent, conscious decision for the Bretons to imitate Irish music, but the rest of the similarities are probably just generic Northwestern European aspects shared across most traditions there

This song can hardly be considered traditional. In fact, La Villemarqué really did collect a folk song. We know this because his notebooks have been preserved, deciphered and published. They and their transcriptions are freely available on the Université de Brest website. However, a comparison between the material he collected and the version he published shows that he considerably altered and embellished the content. What he collected was a very rambling drinking song, sung to him by a drunkard, and he turned it into an epic song. That's for the lyrics, because there's no transcription of the music in his notebooks, and we don't know where he got the tune from. As far as I know, this tune, or one resembling it, has never been noted by any other collector. La Villemarqué was not motivated by a scientific approach. He was a romantic, and his work must be seen in the context of his time and background. He is not a reliable source of authentic Breton song or music. There are much better sources, with very interesting and valuable content.
