I believe he shot her, and that is the reason why he placed his gun at the scene. He assumed the body would be found intact, revealing the cause of death and that the bullet would then be linked to his weapon. That’s why he went back to the scene the following morning to stage the gun near the body and afterwards report the weapon stolen. Even though it seems like the state is leaning towards death by asphyxiation it had to have been a gun shot, otherwise there would have been no reason for him to leave his gun at the scene. Maybe the bullet did not puncture any bone but instead hit a critical vein or something, causing her to bleed out

His gun had a full clip in it when it was found. I think she was already dead when he brought her to the woods. I think he dropped the gun by accident when he was putting Susana on the ground. He went back to try to find it, but never was able to find it. That's when he decided to report it stolen.

There is a mounted light under the barrel of the gun that was found in the woods. Basically a flashlight attachment. This type of gun is commonly used by law enforcement. The clip of the gun was full when found, so he did not shoot her. He used the gun as a flashlight as he moved through the woods to find a location to hide her body. Susana was most likely already deceased and was carried into the woods. Once he found a location, he turned the flashlight off and dumped her body. He probably proceeded to run from the area, tripped on a fallen tree branch (it was a pitch black night) or something and dropped the gun. He came back the following morning to search for the gun in daylight, still couldn't find it so then he falsely reported the gun stolen.

No, he did not shoot her bc her skeleton would have shown that. He most likely strangled her. But he is an army man, so he knows how to strangle a person, especially someone so petite and not break her hyoid bone. This is why there was no trauma to her skeleton bc on this basis, postmortem detection of hyoid fracture is relevant to the diagnosis of strangulation. However, that bone was not found to be able to say if it were fractured or not.

Well she said it is undetermined because the body didn't have flesh left. But I love how she made it clear that as a professional she still believes it was homicide. @latdarc That’s why the prosecution presents additional evidence linking him to the location and time of the crime. Obviously cause of death cannot be determined due to the condition of the remains BUT manner of death can still be determined and thus, it’s homicide.
