“I asked him if he stayed up at night breastfeeding his prostate… he said no, so I went ahead and took my maternity leave” GOOD FOR YOU! @@Bringon-dw8dx in the USA if your company has over 50 ppl and you’ve worked their 6 months full time you can get up to 6 months off for medical leave I think, but none of it is paid unless your workplace has a generous maternity policy, which my experience was that you had to use your vacation and sick leave and that doesn’t cover usually more than 4-6 weeks. The doctor talking about the rolling stool struck a chord! My mother had eight pregnancies/nine kids in eight years! When she went to her first prenatal appointment with my last sister, the young doctor came in to introduce himself. She recognized him from the last baby, but he apologized saying that he sees so many patients that he has trouble remembering them all. Then she got undressed and up in the stirrups and he sat on his little rolling stool, got into position and said, “Oh! Yeah!” Ma said she’d NEVER seen someone blush that fast! 😅

My cousin told us that after she had the baby she would get too bored so she would be back to work withing three or four months. We told her she would likely not be bored and babies take a lot of energy to care for especially when recovering from birth not to mention she will be heartbroken to leave him so soon. Shes given birth which was a c section so that takes even longer to recover from . But its been three months and she is showing no signs of wanting to go back yet. Until you've had a kid man or woman you dont know how much you are attached to that kid the first year. You worry over them you poor every last drop of your energy into them and its very difficult to leave them with anyone but your partner for any length of time. You need at least 6 or 7 months and thats not even long enough. And in this world you cant just opt not to work to be a mom or dad you cant choose because most places dont pay enough to support one person on one salary nevermind your whole family.

I changed OBs with my first kid because all he wanted to do was look, ask if I was ok, and if I had any questions. The problem was that I wasn't ok, and I had a bunch of questions. He just told me the problems were in my head, and I should read a pregnancy book. After 2 appointments I was beginning to think that it was in my head, so I asked my husband to go with me. I'd ask a question, he'd blow me off. My husband asked a question, sometimes repeating my question, or coming up with his own, he answered immediately. Needless to say, I found another Dr really quick. And yes I was having an actual problem. He just didn't want to deal with it, the new Dr had no problems with helping me through it. The funnier thing was that the old Dr refused to cancel any of my prenatal appointments. Despite telling him that I found a new Dr that listened better, he said that I was only allowed to see him. I'm like "you're still not listening!" Needless to say I had to go to my insurance company and explain the situation because the old Dr said that he was going to charge me and my insurance for my missed appointments. They called him and set him straight on my behalf. BTW the second Dr was wonderful. She was very kind, patient, listened, answered all of my questions. Everything you need in a great Dr. I just wish that work didn't make me move away.

It blows my mind that someone who's job it is to deliver babies thinks 2 weeks is plenty of time off. Like even if you had a relatively easy time of it physically... um... you have this whole new human to care for... and it's hugely beneficial for parents to spend lots of time with that new human early on. Not to mention that having that new human in your life completely flips "normal" upside down for you no matter how prepared you think you are. JFC. How much did your life change after having your prostate out... not that freaking much. She was nice about it, I probably would have laughed in his face before cussing him out in front of god and everyone. I don't even want kids but I'm tempted to ask my OB their opinions on how much time people should try to take off from work after having a baby. If it's anything less than 8 weeks, I'm walking straight out that door and finding a new one asap.

Not become an emergency physician just because they've never broken a bone? What about a childfree woman who hasn't and will never have kids but wants to work in labor and delivery? So why is there no consideration that the person I am with will suffer the consequences and compare them to the consequences I suffer? While not all men share my sentiment, that’s our choice to make. I should get to choose, not the FDA. Edit: I am of course ignoring the fact that there are VERY obvious financial consequences and that my decision in parenthood is basically non existent once the person I’m with becomes pregnant. When my OBGYN was a male, he told me that I had to take the placebo pills and couldn't skip periods. He also didn't want to listen to any of my side effects from birth control, so I decided to find a new doctor because I care more about my personal health than loyalty to an insentive doctor. Once I switched to my current OB, she told me that it wasn't necessary and that if I didn't want to have a period I could continue with a new pack. This saved me from having a period during a vacation and my wedding. She also helped me deal with side effects and helping me find a different birth control with fewer side effects. This did result in me finding out that my body and birth control are just not compatible.

Have you tried other types of birth control besides just the pill? They make ones without estrogen, you can use barrier methods, spermicide, or a really common option is a copper IUD like the one shown in the video. Those are all additional options if you are having issues with hormonal birth control. They very rarely fall out, so if that’s your main concern it’s not very likely at all. Just because your body didn’t react well to being on the pill, doesn’t mean there aren’t still options if you are interested!

@@Jellybeansatdusk estrogen isn't the problem. Thus far I have tried multiple different pills combination and not. I have tried depo-provera. I have tried the hormone based IUDs. The copper IUD is not an option due to heavy periods as it tends to make periods worse. I always have a ton of side effects. The side effects are even worse if I'm on a progesterone only method. My worst experiences were the depo and the IUD. Also the current birth control method my husband and I are practicing is that he got a vasectomy, which allows me to avoid hormonal birth control all together. The sugar pills for the placebo pills were not put in place for the Catholic church, the Catholic church still is not ok with the pill and the official position is a no. What the two independent review committees that were monitoring the safety data of the study factored into their decision to shut down the trials were things like: - The 320 men who participated in the study reported nearly 1,500 adverse events, of which 900 were directly attributed to the drug. - "The pill" statistically shows a 70% reduction in acne in women, but the injection for the men resulted in significant increases in acne for nearly 50% of the participants. - Side effects included injection site pain, severe acne, mood disorders (nearly 20% experienced a mood disorder), night sweats, confusion, testicular pain, erectile dysfunction (which essentially negates the entire purpose for taking the medication) and a potential risk of permanent sterilization. The rates of side effects were significantly higher than the rates of side effects for female birth control. Given that it is solely intended as a method of birth control and has zero other benefits for the user (unlike the non-intercourse related benefits associated with "the pill"), it's a simple matter of cost/benefit analysis. It's not misogyny or sexism. The costs (adverse effects) of the medication far outweighed the benefits (reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy from unprotected sex) and the independent study safety review boards (not guys being wimps) decided to shut it down. And your secondhand smoke argument is a false equivalence. You can't get pregnant because someone else is having sex in your general vicinity. There are no secondhand pregnancies.

@@missapodysis I know what birth control does to women. The negative side effects are at a much lower percentage and the benefits far outweigh the costs in the vast majority of cases. The point that I was making is that the reason that the male birth control trials ended was due to the safety concerns associated with the trial. The costs far outweighed any benefit. And if we really want to get down to brass tacks, if either party, male or female, isn't ready for the possibility of pregnancy, they should just keep it in their pants.

When I was in primary school my dad shamed me when I asked to stay home when I was sick. He said he doesn’t so I can’t, and so other than the time I got the flu (bc my family never took us to get our flu shots) I went to school. Now that I am in college, some professors are understanding when you catch a cold, and some are not. Online school has helped me partially avoid that problem. I found a workplace that understands that if you are sick, stay home bc they dont want what I have. Tldr is when you need time off for whatever the reason is, but especially for a pregnancy, it is unfortunate to defend or fight for it.

Yes, absolutely, if someone smokes it effects those around them, and if they quit it's better for everyone around them, but the FDA doesn't look at it going "Well this product will help this person's family so we should lower the standards." No, they look at the specific person who's doing the smoking. Which is why my "Hannibal Lecter-style face cage to prevent cigarette usage" submission was declined by the FDA.

But if that person doesn't take male birth control, the risks are still there, it's just someone else who bears the side effects, they could potentially harm someone else by getting them pregnant so... the weighing of side effects and the outcome of being on or off the medication... the way I view it, it kinda ends up being the same. What else to do with a prenatal appointment for an uncomplicated pregnancy: - Prepare her for what childbirth is like, including what interventions there are and how her medical team will decide when those are necessary. - If she's planning on breastfeeding, talk her through what a good latch looks like. - Talk with her about what recovery looks like, including what her lochia will look like and how to care for a tear. - Talk to her about her anxieties about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. - If she doesn't have any questions, talk to her about herself, her life, and her plans. Prenatal appointments are often the start of the whole feeling of, "Yeah, I love my baby, but I'm still here and I still matter. What about me?"

My copper IUD came loose, went sideways and embedded in my uterus. Had to be surgically cut out, and there's still a piece of it in there! They wanted to do a second surgery since they couldn't retrieve all of it. "Is it hurting anything?" "No..." "Well, as much as I love anesthesia, let's leave it the hell alone." And I really DO love anesthesia. I literally am turning over responsibility for me to someone else and I get to feel GREAT before and after, AND they fix something that needed fixing badly enough to do the damn thing. Wins all around. My OB-GYN thought I was nuts when I told her that, but I only shared my theory about it once I was already pretty high and prepped. And then she gave me a tubal, finally, after literally decades of asking and being told I needed my husband's permission or at least two kids (...the point is I don't WANT kids?) or sometimes both.

People have a really inconsistent idea of what pain tolerance is. I'm mostly in healthcare but worked as a piercer for some time, formally for a year ish then on the side for years after that, so I have plenty of experience observing differences that correlated across genders. What I noticed is that men would vocalize about pain or otherwise indicate that they were experiencing it far sooner/with milder stimulus than women, but women would almost invariably show far less self-control once they did indicate experiencing pain. Guys would start verbalizing right away, but would hold still through an entire procedure, whereas women would seem fine for a while at first but then suddenly yip loudly and make jumpy/jerky movements. I'd rather pierce a male any day. Sure they complained but they held still far better and obeyed instructions better as well.

John Rock, one of the scientists who developed the birth control pill in the 1950s, was a devout Catholic who was eager to earn his pill the approval of the Catholic church. He thought it might appease the Pope if the pill mimicked a woman’s natural menstrual cycle and also figured the placebo week might make it easier for Catholics to practice the rhythm method, which was the Church’s only approved form of birth control at the time. Unfortunately for Rock, the placebo week did not garner the Pope’s approval. The Catholic Church maintained its strong position against birth control, with Pope Paul VI even releasing a statement in 1968 calling birth control “intrinsically wrong.” After John Rock’s placebo campaign failed, he stopped practicing Catholicism, bitterly disappointed that the Pope had not embraced the pill, but the format of birth control pills never changed. (Simple Health (2019): What Does the Pope Have to Do With Birth Control Pills? Published: January 16, 2019•Updated: June 25, 2021) So the Catholic church didnt react the way he wanted, but the placebos were still put in to appease the Catholic church...

@@rockabillymuffin "The Birth of the Pill" by Jonathan Eig, suggests that that wasn't entirely Rock's idea. Rock was studying treatments of progesterone and estrogen to increase fertility. These tests caused symptoms similar to pregnancy, tricking some of the women into thinking that they were pregnant. Gregory Pincus recognized the contraceptive effects of Rock's tests, proposing a tweak of a break from the hormones to allow the women a period. Rock compared the proposed tweaks to be similar in fashion to the rhythm method. Pincus then presented his pill for testing on Rock's patients as a contraceptive. From this angle, it seems that Rock recognized the final product as a happy accident, or that it was close enough to Church stances, that he hoped to bring it before the Church for secondary approval. Not that he engineered the pill for the Church's favor.

I never understood why moms in movies set in the US go back to work so fast until someone told me it's because they have to, or they might lose their job (I know I'm making it too short, but I'm not from the US so I don't know all the ins and outs). The reason why I was so shocked is that because here in Hungary, where we argue that public helthcare is ages behind and underfunded (even though we at least have it), after you give birth, you are entitled to have 70% percent of your original monthly wage every month for 2 YEARS. After that, you are entitled for one more year of about 175 USD monthy childcare aid (sorry for the awkward translation). And when the child becomes 3 year old, they start going to kindergarden, so the mom can go back to work pretty easily. These numbers are the normal amount, there are some factors that might increase it, and if the mother decides that they want to go back to work instead of this, either the father or one of the grandparents can apply for it instead of the mother. This is one thing I only learned to appreciate after finding out that it doesn't work that way at all in the US.

Regarding the side-effects of birth control (on or off) to those taking it (male or female), the risk of being *off the medication* is pregnancy, and all of its associated risks. In the case of men, of course that risk is born by their intimate partner, but ultimately, it takes two people to make a baby - it takes two people to confer that whole host of both likely AND possible (but less likely) medical issues onto one. And if a pair of people who are planning on intercourse are not in mutual agreement that it would be acceptable if the encounter ended in pregnancy, the responsibility of preventing pregnancy should fall on both of them _equally,_ no matter what kind of relationship they have (whether they're married, dating, or engaging in a spontaneous/one-off encounter). As a man, I am sick of "pregnancy-prevention" being seen as a woman's job, and I am eager for the day when there is a pill I can take as a form of reversible birth control...even if the side-affects approach those which women deal with every month on their own forms of hormonal birth control.

I can see how this could be extremely ethically tricky, and why the standard is the way it is, but as you suggested we should obviously have debate about this and consider a change. Pregnancy is not just a personal health condition it’s a societal process, and both sexes should share more equal burdens in the physical risk factors. This seems like a great place to start.
