Came as tourist to Hungary for a week. Sometimes when I go to a restaurant or shop, some people (only some) look at you differently. If you smile no one smiles back at you. That's when I realized no matter how much money you have, you are fish out of water when u leave ur home. There are times when you want to take a mic and say, "am a tourist who is helping your economy by spending the money I earned elsewhere and not a immigrant taking your job". I don't blame them as many of them have never explored outside Europe and are skeptical of foreigners. At least when I have this feeling, I have a country to go back after a week or two. Believe me, some Hungarians, Slovaks and Czechs will stare at you (and even glare and say something xenophobic) if you happen to be a foreigner of *any* description. I'm as white as a lily and I've experienced it more times than I can count. I tend to ignore it though, knowing fully well that people in my country can and do act just the same way. Just bear in mind though, the not smiling thing is endemic in the post-Eastern Bloc world. They don't even tend to smile at each other. It's most likely not due to any hostility toward you personally.

Take care of yourself first, always! Educating yourself is good, but only do so if it's not going to harm you. Someone very dear to me is the same, Native and Roma, and they're still uncertain whether or not mentioning it is safe in North America, after moving here from Europe. The main complaint seems to be that "they're thieves", but what can you do when, in many countries, Roma aren't allowed to own property and nobody will hire them? When you make people "illegal", they do illegal things, surprisingly enough. Keep your chin up, both Native Americans and Romani have incredible resilience and courage rooted deeply within their ancestry.

Interesting, I too live in Canada and am an immigrant, I have never met a born and bred Canadian that walks around expressing hate towards first nations people or" the Natives" as you call them. I had to cry watching this. I remember many of it, of the crazy brutal rasismus and the fear of skinheads. I grew up in the 90' in the Czech Republic. Even though I'm not Roma I was several time bullied by the skinheads as well. When they didn't find target among the Romas they searched for left-thinking young folks, punks, etc who were partially hanging out in the same rock clubs and pubs as we did. I witnessed the brutality several times and it was nothing in comparison how they treated Romas. And the majority was silent towards it. Rasismus is big in our country. I'm only happy to feel slight improvement in the past decade. Unfortunately a little baby girl had to be badly burned by a fire caused by molotov cocktail those pigs threw in her family house window. For the first time those criminals got real sentences. I wish I'd experience in my lifetime a real change when the Roma people will be fully accepted members of our society 🙏❤️

I wrote a comment several days ago about my grandmother, father in law, and partners aunt being robbed (at some point in the last decade) by ethnic Roma (all being born in eastern Europe). Each time the perpetrators were either found on CCTV or caught by the police and their ethnicity confirmed (so I was not being racist). In fact the comment was a long one, listing my personal experiences of the Roma. I read through my comment several times to ensure nothing written could be interpreted as racist, and everything written was factual apart from a sentence at the end where I was critical of the use of begging and robbing the vulnerable as a means of making money (which a minority of Roma do: an indisputable fact). I commented on my horror at the ongoing persecution of the Roma, and commented that no one deserves to be discriminated against based on their ethnicity. I see the comment has been deleted!!!! If opinions can not be written that are critical of the subject group then why bother to allow comments at all? Turn off the comment box if you can not cope with a negative opinion. Freedom of speech is a right that we must all enjoy, not just those who happen to agree with the point you are trying to make.

What point are you trying to make after watching the documentary about Czech Roma? You say some are beggars.! Look away from your narrowness of thought because beggars are from every creed not just Roma! Thieves are the minority of every country. The same can be said of Roma. Very interesting, eye opening & enlightening viewing. These sad stories truly touch my heart & soul. I so feel for the Romani peoples. We humans are totally illogical & hypocritical to say the very least. Let me ask here, anyone from any global ethnic group..........What would you or your people resort to through sheer '"desperation", if your people had been seriously marginalised, judged, blamed, criticised & placed on the outer peripheries of mainstream society for hundreds of years? I have grown up in an area with lots of gypsy families. They're nice people, respectful and would only trouble a non traveller if they were disrespected or provoked from what I've seen. They're not bullies or thugs or thieves. The majority are very respectful people that suffer extreme racism worse than any other race I've witnessed.

@@definitely_maybe_not_a_fed No my friend but i have grown up with lots of travelling lads and they're nice respectable people, they are family orientated, they suffer daily from people looking down on them because of things they hear, they don't bother country people unless they're provoked, they do figjt amongst themselves and deal with disagreements within their own community, they work hard, they marry young and respect their parents immensely, they value family and they look after one another. Yes, there is a section of their community who commit crimes and cause havok but theres a section of every community that does that and we dont expect to be judged on the actions of other members of our community so why should travellers accept that they're all victimised by the actions of a minority of their community? I think exactly the same of the Asain community, the black community, Irish community, Polish community and i believe that people should be treated on face value and how they behave and treat others not on their heritage, background, skin colour, ethnicity or origin. This is 2021. We are supposed to be a Great Country, a welcoming nation of opportunity where people have the chance to succeed without restriction if they are willing to work hard, respect others and abide by the law of the land. Nobody has a devine right to judge other human beings based on negative behaviours of other members of their community thats ridiculous. There's good and bad in all communities but particularly with the travelling community it's almost accepted to frown upon them and judge them as one big gang of thieving, violent scum and its completely untrue and unbelievably unfair in my opinion. There's many values of travelling people that i wish were in every community. Loyalty, respect, family bonds, religion and work ethic to name a few. I'm a white working class lad from Manchester. I see young gangs of thugs from my community, listening to violent drill music glorifying violence and gang culture, lazy, disrespectful to their Parents, disrespectful to their neighbours and intimidate people on their own estates but nobody speaks about that. Their thugs, were then not all labelled working class white scum for their behaviour although its our failures as parents, lack of family values and work ethic which results in them behaving that way. Sad story of the Gypsies was that they were considered as untouchables and outcast in India. Then in 13th and 14th century most fled India either as slaves or out of fear. All these years and still no one has accepted them. Gypsies, forest tribes in Rajasthan still face social issues in India. Feel very sad for these people and hopefully one day things will change for them.
