"I am exactly the same speed!" Stankdog claims to be the same speed on either a 125 2-stoke or 250F

Stankdog is not doubt the king of the 2-strokes. So much so that he claims he can go the exact same speed on a 125 2-stroke as on a 250F. How much faster are you on a 4-stroke if anything at all?

Gared Steinke races f*cking dirtbikes... 2-Stroke dirt bikes to be exact. He is a cult figure in motocross and one of the most universally loved guys on two wheels. I started riding in 03 when I was barely a teenager on a bored out KX100, I rode for 12 years won a local championship on a KX 125 and eventually rode an RM 250 2T...so I can relate in terms of riding 2 strokes, I have literally never sat on a 4 stroke let alone ride one, which seems kind of crazy thinking about that now.

I guess something to consider is that he is a 2 stroke specialist, he has invested far more time/energy into perfecting his bike setup and skillset for a 2 stroke than he has for a 250f, so you could argue that you have to work a bit harder to achieve the same results on a 125cc. Regardless, it is impressive, and I don't doubt him at all. Now for the equalizer, companies (aside from a few) have invested nearly all of their time/energy into 4 stroke motorcycles pretty much leaving 2 strokes for dead, so if companies had continued progressing 2 strokes alongside 4 strokes, they'd probably be pretty similar in performance, just different in the way you have to ride them. So I think the extra work required to go the same speed on a 125cc is more attributed to the lack of investment from companies to continue making 2 stroke bikes better, that and you have to know how to ride a 2 stroke properly.

Don't get me wrong I love 2strokes and loved watching Stankdog in arenacross, but if you are the exact same speed on a 4 stroke as you are a 2stroke you aren't trying hard enough to adapt to the power delivery and the difference in handling characteristics.

@@scottw2157 yeah, to be the same speed on a bike that he never rides compared to a bike that he mastered pretty much says that if he wanted to, he could find way more speed on the 250f. Fully tapped potential matches untapped potential, it's obvious which one allows you to climb higher. I still wish they had a 125 class though.

i only raced b class but my lap times on my 250f and 125 were almost the same back when i raced both in 07 08

Others have published side by side 2t v. 4t results and have shown depending on the track, lap times can be very similar. It seems in those tests, the consensus is that it’s more difficult to be consistently fast on the 2t, particularly as the tracks break down and the rider wears out. This guy is a pro though, so pretty much everything is on the table, speed wise.

Keep doing what you love mate. I went from 93 cr250 to 97 rmx250 licenced 2banga to 92 wr500 then went racing and ramps on 07 yz125. Then got 07,11,15 ktm300exc to currently 18 te300. Can't live without the 2strokes. 4strokes are for people who can't handle powerband and have too much money. Racing doesn't show skills like it used too. Most skilled rider won, not factory teams racing in looks like own class and all following the leader. Avagud1 Stankdog. Keep rippin

I understand what He’s saying. And a motocross track. I bet his lap times are the same. But man I just think him on a 250f set up right in supercross. He could podium a heat race possibly. Those tracks are tight and there wouldn’t be any lag or bog coming out of corners hitting jumps and the whoops you wouldn’t have to clutch it as much. Idk. I could be wrong. But I’d like to see him try a 250 in supercross

hearing about his upbringing drives home one attribute that all great athletes have ... desire. More than that, it's desire at an early age ... that doesn't fade with time. I see lots of moto families, where parents are putting so much into helping their kids get better. But it's the kids who have that passion for the sport inside them that are most likely to succeed. When it's just a another hobby for junior, junior isn't going to become an elite athlete. In any sport, the work you put into it matters. In moto, it's seat time ... but that time spent on the bike has to be focused on quality (not quantity). You have to practice like you're racing because you will race like you practice. Stankdog knew early on that he needed to be faster ... and so he focused on that and his speed improved. You gotta want it, but more importantly, you gotta be willing to put in the work to get what you want. Very few young riders have that today, and I think that's why, despite the increase in the popularity of the sport (more kids are into moto today than ever), there haven't been many new riders to come along who have the eye of the tiger of past riders like Carmichael or Stewart.

I have an 03 RM 125 a 13 RMZ 270 and a 12 YZF 450 and my lap times are almost the same on every bike. i think lap time comes down to rider speed not bike speed.

Too be honest mate 250t are almost equivalent to a 350f. 450's have left 250t's behind now that's why in the amatuer ranks you can race 250f against 250t these days. I think they should redo classes to 200t vs 250f and 250t vs 350f, then if they really need it 300t vs 450f

I got to ride all the bike sizes on a ktm demo day, that was whike my little brother had a 250f, and dad and i had a 450, i have to say, the modern ktm 125 is fast, and not just for a 125, its fast, ive also rode a yz, cr, and kx 125 and none of them had anything close to the power the ktm had, stock to stock i would say the 125, or especially the 150 is competitive with the 250f's, now there is something to be said about favtory motors and the modding capacity of a 4 stroke, but a ktm or husky tiddler isnt as far behind as peopld think
