@janebishop5885 What is obviously missing is the hidden hand of the West trying to weaken Russia by eventually getting to impose their (Western) presence in Syria and Georgia, meaning the South of Russia and its warm waters naval outlets.

At that time Turkey joined NATO, the USA wanted any ally it could get against the USSR, and Turkey showed willingness to commit to western causes by costly acts like fighting in the Korean war. Turkey was a secular republic with perhaps the most western orientation of any Muslim majority country. And NATO has no mechanism to expel members that no longer align with the alliance's goals. Doh!

The only reason the pocket of Takfiri exist in Idlib is because during the initial dirty war of Syria, they were given option to retreat and take their family anytime they were surrounded in a city, in order to reduce damage to city and non-combatant population. Russia / Iran / Syria has an option to level that area if they wanted, and if they acted like colonialists (ISR/USA/NATO). The idea was that they would be contained and perhaps eventually they would give up their takfiri trade and move on. It was a bad idea.

@@TheVeritas2100 I respectfully disagree. Russia is already in deep shit in Ukraine. To pull resources from Ukraine to go Syria, would be folly. Iran? Maybe. But that too would be world class buffoonery. It just gives Isarael another front to kick their ass and cause global humiliation for the Ayatollahs. But, no one in recent times have called Russia or Iran particularly smart, so you may be right.
