"everybody just urinate all over my arm right now"- Grey 2015
@kacee34727 жыл бұрын
I had just started watching the podcast, and scrolled down to look at a few comments, and this was the top comment. Now I am confused, and waiting to get to the part when grey says that, to see it in context, because out of context, that sounds really really weird.

I don't think Grey realizes that a lot of people who have audio playing in the background while doing focus-intensive work aren't actually paying much attention to the words or conversation, at least for me it's like a pleasant white noise that helps me stay concentrated on what I'm doing.
@gabe30422 жыл бұрын
i bet grey is the type of person who needs to listen and pay attention to the info being spoken, even when doing a primary task. im the same way
I can't program in silence. I have to have some sort of audio going, and usually it's podcasts because music is often too engaging. But when I'm doing bits that require real thought then the podcast gets mostly ignored and I start paying attention again during the parts that require little to no thought. But that's why Hello Internet isn't part of that playlist; I'm not willing to ignore any of HI.

The bit you missed on programming is that the podcast is paused while you figure out the complex bits and unpaused for the drudgery of writing out the code in the proper syntax.
@ricardopieper118 жыл бұрын
+Lucid Moses Yep, and also, it's not that you stop paying attention to the coding task... sometimes you want some background noise, and podcasts work very well for me. You pay less attention to the podcast, not to the coding itself.
@gasquake8 жыл бұрын
Personally, programming and listening to something is never a big deal to me, pretty natural.
@lucidmoses8 жыл бұрын
gasquakee Yea, fair enough. I would however recommend you start looking for some more challenging projects. As the years go by it can get fairly dull if you don't. But hay. to each there own if your ok with it at least there is plenty of work like that.
@gasquake8 жыл бұрын
Lucid Moses I'm saying regardless of difficulty, I've been programming for years.
@lucidmoses8 жыл бұрын
gasquakee Ok, sorry to hear that. I assumed you where just not challenged but not being able to focus on something well enough that other things drop away maybe something that they can treat. Ritalin gets prescribed at a drop of a hat now. Ritalin may not be the issue for you but at least the issues is common enough that you will not just be laughed at. Anyways. Good luck.

I program while listening to this podcast. Sometimes it does collide with my brain (and I turn off the podcast, which tbh I should do right now), but sometimes programming thoughts don't register as words, and if I try to work without listening to words there's this eery sort of silence that distracts me.
@callmequaz90523 жыл бұрын

On the note of listening to podcasts while doing some kind of work, I listening through the whole series of this podcast as I finish a project with long hours each day. I don't think I'm biased in this, but I feel as if I work more consistently for a long period of time. While I would agree, for a 1 hour period, I could focus and could be maybe 10% more attentive, I've found that I become drained in some sense and lose focus if I try to maintain that. If instead, I keep a less stressed, more relaxed and laid back approach to my coding tasks, I often find I'm able to work for longer, more enjoyably. It requires a certain kind of task I need to solve and program and a certain frame of mind, but I do think it is beneficial.

If I’m not listening to stuff at 2speed while driving I fall asleep. I need that to stop myself from falling asleep to the humm of the engine or the gentle radio. You put me in any vehicle and I can fall asleep oh so quick, the alternative method for not falling asleep is for me to break the speed limit, which is definitely more dangerous than driving slowly but jamming oodles of white noise into my ear at anyone time

Actually speaking from my experience I can listen to podcasts when programing but! There is one big rule for me. As it works for me when I listen to podcast or do something another while developing code, it is a big problem, the result is terrible and it takes waaaay longer than it should. But when I already know how to continue with piece of code I can listen to podcast because I don't need to do anything creative, it is already in my head and I am just translating it for the computer to understand. It is fairly automated process, at least for me. As my college teacher once told us: "You can code even when you are drunk if you prepare the algorithms beforehand."

Urine is actually bad and can make it worse. A better alternative is seawater or, even better, vinegar. Then to get rid of the remaining tentacle pieces use shaving cream or a mix of water and sand, then scrape with a shaving razor or a credit card (or similar object). It'll get worse over the next 5 minutes, but then better over the next couple of hours.
