Ian, I believe the "thing" on the front of the barrel was a barrel resonance compensator. You have to rise the front sight to match the line of sight (look at a G3 or the civilian versions). The big black ribbed bulge on the front is a barrel vibration tuning weight. When you fire a gun, the barrel vibrates, and just like a vibrating string it has a shape that can be predicted and tuned using weights. Those vibrations are mostly on a plane perpendicular to the ground, so tuning them changes the vertical impact point. Not all ammo is perfect, and the gun isn't perfectly consistent either, so there's a variation in muzzle velocities which causes a variation in the vertical impact point. If the barrel is tuned just right, it's possible to make it so that the barrel points slightly upward with slightly lower velocity ammo so that the point of impact can be consistent. www.geoffrey-kolbe.com/articles/rimfire_accuracy/tuning_a_barrel.htm
@nigelft5 жыл бұрын
So basically, instead of the barrel being a tuning fork, it dampens out the harmonics to not only improve PoA, but especially PoI ... ... or am I missing something ...?
@7thdivision5 жыл бұрын
that one looks really nice, too bad they don't sell em
@Fuddleton5 жыл бұрын
The end piece on the barrel is I assume a counterweight. The you can tune out certain resonances from barrel harmonics with a tuned weight on the end of the barrel. It may also just be a heavy duty attachment for a front sight, and the barrel blank just didn't have military front sight provisions.

I believe that the muzzle device attached to the end of the barrel, as well as the grooved piece near the breech that appears to be a barrel nut may have two purposes. 1. To dampen/improve barrel harmonics. 2. To dissipate heat. I wonder if the engineers behind the rifle's design had reason to believe POI/POA shifts could occur no matter how small with rapid fire from the semi auto rifle. It would make some sense to make every attempt to minimize and prevent vibrations at the more critical junctures, it appears that is what was attempted there.

The weird device at the muzzle could be there as a "rail system". Looks like the front sight is actually oriented and mounted in the grooves, maybe they thought about using this also to enable switching out front sights (for whatever reasons) or to mount stuff like lasers? Ok, im kind of guessing here. But could it be H&K's attempt for a new rifle for the Norwegian DFS in the late 80's? The Sauer 200STR was chosen in 1990. There were alot of different standard rifles in consideration, including the Kongsberg irg-m85 rifle with sideloaded magazines(not the Krag Jørgensen), Mauser m86 and a variant of the Steyr SSG. And up til the AG3(G3) the DFS has used the same rifle as the ones issued to the army, so that a match G3 would be a candidate would make sense to me. The rail in the front is for a sling and the buttpad is adjustable up and down.

It is dated because it is old and optics have drastically improved over the past years. But the 1,5-6x42 Schmidt&Bender itself is fairly common here in Germany on top of older hunting rifles and an excellent optic: Robust and reliable mechanics, good field of view and still useful even in low light conditions.
