Baroque music takes all one's scrambled little brain cells, and puts them into proper order again!

I admire Mozart and Haydn but on the whole the Rococo period is a let down after the high Baroque.

Nice to compare with Blankenburg's Fuga obligata...

That's very interesting! I hadn't heard of Blankenburg before! I heard the Fuga Obligata, it's beautiful! I can't find sheet music sadly. I found a site that says he released his fugue in a book called "Elementa Musica" in 1739, and he accused Handel of plagiarism, even though he released this fugue years earlier.

Very nicely played, but too fast for the time signature, I think.

It's a matter of taste I think, some performers play it slower, some play it at this speed. I love a lively tempo for this fugue.

@@RhadMusic I know many/most players agree with you. My view is based on Handel's choice of note value and time signature, and I find I prefer the extra gravitas of a slower tempo.

Common time, no modifying tempo words, it would be "tempo ordianrio", generally understood to be quarter note = 60-80, depending on who you're reading at the moment. I tap out it on my metronome app to just about 81, so imho the tempo is fine. My objection would be that is too detached throughout, I think that more slurring, at least within the beat, had become common practice by the late baroque, but maybe that was more on the continent. But after being played so detached throughout, the final chord is approached with an almost over legato, but maybe there is an English performance practice with which 'm not familiar.

@johnsteven6273 My thinking is not to play generally detached, but only the subject, wherever it's found, as a way to make it stand out from all the other voices.

@@johnsteven6273 We're not far apart, since my crude starting point is quarter = 60. But with the beats mostly containing eighths, rather than quarters, it's valid to be a bit faster. I have recorded this recently, but the CD won't be out for a month. I suspect you'll find my speed too slow, but it gives the mood I want. Plus, you have better fingers!
