Hårgalåten is an old Swedish folk song! Here’s a little background story about the song: The Hårgadansen or Hårgasägnen is a legend about how the devil himself, disguised as a fiddler, made the young people in the village of Hårga in Hälsingland dance themselves to death. The oldest known record of the legend was made by the commissioner in Bollnäs Johan Gabriel Lindström in 1785 and is reproduced in JD Flitenberg's collections about Hälsingland. I would highly appreciate if you could react to another Swedish band, Mustasch with their song ”Double Nature” take the official music video. Thanks for a great reaction ❤

Count on the older generation to see the youth dancing and having fun instead of going to church on sunday as a cause for panic lol Still, Ofdrykkja made a great rendition of this old song. It has become my favorite version of it.

English translation: The fiddler grabbed the fiddle from it's case And lifted his bow towards the dawning Sunday sun Then the people of Hårga came in a hurry Forgot about God and the whole world They danced over meadows and hills High upon the top of Hårga ridge One wore out both shoes and heels One could not stop the dance Where do you come from, you who is playing Tell us who taught you such play, so wild and mad If you don't stop our hearts will burst Oh God preserve us, he has a cloven hoof! The bells had rung in the valley, And father and mother and brother Walked to the parish church Where can Hårga's youth now be? Oh my God, they are still dancing! They danced to the Hårga tune High upon the top of Hårga ridge They are not far from crying Dancing, they now wore out soul and body Stop your bow, fiddler Before we dance our life, soul and bones away No he doesn't stop his dance Until we all fall dead down

A lot of old Swedish folk music has this sort of melancholic, haunting sound to it. Very beautiful in their own way, though very difficult to translate in a way that makes sense while also keeping the feeling of the song.

They danced so wildly and fast that their feet, legs and bodies ground down on the top of the mountain. The last thing they did when only their heads were left was to look up at the sky in sorrow. For they knew they would never get there, for they had danced with the Devil that night.

This is an old Swedish folksong that tells the tale of a group of youth in the village of Hårga who suffer a terrible fate. They are lured away from church service and their families by the devil who has taken the shape of a man playing the fiddle. The devil draws them in with his enchanted music and forces them to dance endlessly until their bones break or die from exhaustion. It is very similar to another old tale about a creature known as "Näcken" (the naked one) who is a lake creature from old Norse mythology. Näcken is also viewed to take many different shapes, usually seen as a tall, thin and handsome man with long black hair who plays the fiddle to lure people into the lake to drown them. Sometimes he also appears like an old man, or even more monstrous, with sickly green skin, tall, thin and gaunt, with long black hair. Hope this helped. :D

A slight modification: the devil appeared AFTER they had ignored the church bells in the evening. A special night, where christians were supposed to stay home and contemplate. Instead, they danced and drank heavily. As a punishment, the devil appears, and brings them dancing through the night and through the morning church bell ringing. Now they are enchanted, and brought dancing to their death.

Before reading some of the comments I was thinking of the Eloi and Morlocks. I wonder if HG Wells was familiar with this legend? A haunting song. Love it!

It´s pretty simple that the church wanted the youth not to dance and enjoy life and they come up with the legend about the hårgaberget. In sweden that was common to use the supernatural to scare people from the things that the church didn´t like and cold be seen as sinful.

I was getting Blackmore's Night vibes with that. Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night. They do Renaissance music. That's the same Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple and Rainbow

Can really recommend "Under a violet moon" for a possible reaction! And yeah, I'd guess Blackmore and Night are inspired by the same era of music that "Hårgalåten" originated from.

Another I recommend by Blackmore's Knight is their cover of "Diamonds and Rust". Listening to the Live in Paris 2006 version right now, and it's outstanding. Also, BK recently did a collaboration with d'Artagnan (Ben Metzner from Feuerschwanz) which is worth a listen.

It has allready been explained, but i think that you should search for another version of the tune. I believe that it is easyer if you spell it "Horgalaten", since you probably do not have "Å". My favorit is by the swedish folk band "Kebnekajse". If you listen, you will understand why tey where dancing untill only their skulls where rolling around in the cirkel at top of the Hårga mountain!

The fiddler pulled the violin out of the box and lifted the string high to the ball of the Sunday sun. Then the Hårga people became fast. They forgot God and the whole world. The dance went on meadows and hills. High up on the top of Hårgaåsen. They tore off both shoes and heels. The dance never stopped. Stop your bow fiddler before you Dance life and soul and all the bones out of the body No, he won't stop his dance before they All fall dead The bells had rung in the valley and there Father and mother and brother went to the parish church Where can Hårgas' youth now be Oh oh my god they are still dancing The dance goes to the Hårga song High up on the top of the Hårgaåsen One doesn't have far to cry Now dancing to the breaking point of soul and body Here you can now see what is being beaten And shipped out by the state's brandy It tastes if not d maybe lied Almost as good as Skåne Yes we toast all we can stand No one can complain about our party We got drunk all around we roll Welcome here and be our guest With the help of google translate

These guys have made an incredible journey in both life and music. At least it seems that way, compare this to the really disturbing video of ”I skuggan av mig själv”. Edit: Seems like youtube has deleted it but they were down bad on heavy drugs and their drummer ”Bödeln” unfortunately did not make it out alive. Drabbad has written a report on a swedish forum called ”Beer and pills and knives - It went to hell.” involving him and bödeln. I think they’re sober now.

Think of Å/å as the "au" in Paul. Å, Ä and Ö comes last in the Swedish alphabet and are vowels. We have nine 😊
@dromedda6810
@dromedda6810 Жыл бұрын
Wouldnt it be closer to like an o in fork or the Ending vowel of O in Tower? Au in Paul is more like an A? If you were saying Paul in swedish then yeah the au is å but in english its an A, although it depends on the accent
@sharatainx3990
@sharatainx3990 Жыл бұрын
@@dromedda6810 They are talking about Paul in English. And in English "au" in Paul /pɔːl/ is phonetically the same sound as "o" in fork /fɔːk/. So it wouldn't be closer as you suggested, it's simply the same sound. "Au" in Paul in English is not an A. And the word "tower" /taʊər/ does not have the sound ɔː in it so it's not the same sound as in English Paul.
