I`m very happy that you choosed to react to this beautiful song. I live very near this village of Hårga where this folklore took place. As said, the Devil himself showed up as a fiddler and made the youth of this village walk to the top of the hill and played all night, the day after the churchbells rang and everybody was gathered in the church as usual on Sundays, but the youth were all missing. They were all later found on the hill with just the bones sticking up. They all danced themselves to death. You can still see the ring on the ground where they danced, nothing grows there. And the old tree where the Devil sat and play are still there.

It's really interesting how "the devil and his fiddle" legends can be found almost everywhere, at least here in Scandinavia. I remember a very local legend that my middle school music teacher told us about a fiddler in the neighboring village where I live in Norway. Supposedly there was some kind of ban on fiddle playing at some point, but the village fiddler didn't want to stop playing, so he would go into the wilderness and play for himself. The wind would carry the tunes to our village, and the superstitious believed it to be the devil playing his fiddle in the woods. I'm guessing that some of these legends are Christianized versions of the the Fossegrim legends.

I actually think both Sweden and Norway forbid both the fiddle music and dancing at some point in history but I don't remember if it was in the 18 or 1900's. Probably 1800's

"Hårgalåten", or the "Harga song", is a Swedish folk song. The song is connected to a 1785 story published by Johan Gabriel Lindstrom.[1] The song describes how a mysterious fiddler came to the community near Hårgaberget [sv] or "Harga mountain", and played the fiddle. The youth danced to the tune that the fiddler played and they were unable to stop. Some of the youth noticed a cloven hoof, leading them to believe the fiddler was demonic. Even as morning came, the adults noticed they were all still dancing, and the fiddler still fiddling. Later, the dancers started dropping dead from exhaustion.[2]

This is as OG as it gets when it comes to traditional Swedish folksongs, cos that´s what this is. If i´m not completely mistaken it is from the late 1700´s . To give you some context, the song is a is a tale about how the devil himself, disguised as a fiddler, made the young people in the village of Hårga in the region of Hälsingland dance themselves to death.

Ooooo, nice pick! This goes back very far into Swedish music heritage. I've seen some people in the comments explain the story behind this song. This is one of the first songs I learned to play as a child on violin and recorder. My mother used to sing this to me as well haha, I thought it was fascinating! Swedish folk music is very special in how it basically always has varying degrees of melancholy in it. It is musch the same feeling as when you see the Swedish nature and landscape (like in Jonna Jintons videos) - it gives you this melancholy and at the same time sweet, longing feeling. Ballads that tell a tragic story are very very common in traditional music here. Traditional Swedish folk music seldom use drums since those were mainly reserved for war and judgings. So the musicians of old created the heavier slow rhythm/beat (that ordinarily would be the job of the drums) by emphasising the beginning of every measure and sometimes adding a foot stomp. This creates a slow, swinging rhythm which in combination with the melancholy feel creates a kind of hypnotic effect. That doesn't mean that people didn't use drums, they probably did anyway just because it was forbidden:) But this slow, wave-like/swing rhythm is very typical of Swedish folk music. In newer renditions (such as this one), drums are usually added because it sounds cool. I don't think most swedes mind that at all though. I certainly don't, it sounds good :) Imagine it being foot stomping for a more authentic feel :D Also - the use of drums by the scandinavian native peoples (the Sami) were by contrast very common and highly important in their culture and spiritual/animistic religion. Which, of course, meant that the Swedes of old had to be d***s about it, ban their drums and persecute them :/

A perfect rendition of a very old Swedish folklore and traditional song. Hårgalåten is sang together with the Hårgadansen or Hårgasägnen which is a legend about how the devil himself, disguised as a fiddler, made the young people in the village of Hårga in Hälsingland, Sweden, dance themselves to death.

I tried translating the lyrics, but I'm Swedish, so I'm sorry if the grammar is off: The fiddler drew the fiddle from the case, and lifted the bow high towards the Sunday-sun's marble, then moving started the people of Horga, they forgot God and the entire world. The dance went over the fields and hills, high upon the Horga mount's top. They wore out both shoes and heels, never could they make the dancing stop. Where are you from, you who plays? Tell, who taught you the sound, the wild, the crazy? If you don't stop your heart will be crushed, Oh God, beware, he has a goat's hoof! The bells had chimed in the valley, and there went father and mother and brother to the community church. Where could the Horga's youth be, oh Lord they're dancing still! The dance followed the song of Horga, high upon the Horga mount's top, now they are close to tears, dancing asunder soul and body. Hold back your bow, fiddler, before we dance away life and soul and all the bones in the body. No, he doesn't end his dance, before everyone falls dead!

This is a classic Swedish folk tale. The devil, disguised as a fiddler, showed up at a place called Hårga. He led the youth up on a hill and started to play a melody that was so enchanting that they couldn't stop dancing, and the music and the dancing just went on and on until they were all dead. Some say you can still see a ring on the ground on that hill where they danced... Here is a translation: The fiddler pulled his fiddle from the case and raised the bow high towards the sunday sun then the people of Hårga got excited they forgot about god and the whole world Where are you from, fiddler tell me who taught you this play, the wild and crazy if you don't stop the heart will fail oh god save, he has a cloven hoof The bells had rung in the valley and there went father and mother and brother to the village church where can the youth of Hårga be now? oh lord they are still dancing Stop your bow, fiddler, before you dance life and soul and every bone out of the body no, he doesn't stop his dance before they all fall dead

The typical melancholic sound from us in the Nordics. You will find that in 90% of all songs even in modern times, even in ABBA. It originates from the time when the Nordic region was the poorest region in Europe, just over 100 years ago. Then it doesn't help that the 6 months of the year are dark and cold.

Gorgeous song! When I was in my teens I was really into worldwide folklore and I seem to recall a story that fit the visuals of this video perfectly! It's been a really long time, so I can't recall the title or what country it was from (although this sounds Swedish to me) but I do recall the story. The devil shows up in this town as a fiddler and the people in the town literally can't stop dancing....they don't eat, don't drink, don't sleep, they are possessed by the music and dance until they just all drop dead.
