Habstrakt mentioned using a midi trigger for sidechain... Why? Midi-triggers ensure your sidechain stays in sync with Ableton (applies to any manual-shaping sidechain plugin in Ableton - Shaperbox, Gatekeeper, LFOTool, Kickstart). Wish somebody told me that sooner, but now you know... Excludes... Not sure this applies to other DAWs, this does not apply to real audio triggered compressors, and UAD plugins may further effect sync.
@PRxChuletaz3 жыл бұрын
Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I think that works for all DAWs when you use a compressor for sidechaining. I use FL studio and personally I’ve always stuck with volume automation instead of a compressor because of the flexibility of drawing the curve (similar to shaperbox except you don’t need to buy the plug-in) I use the built-in Fruity Balance for all my “sidechaining” (some people call this “ducking” as well)

He suggested Barely Alive’s video on it, I found the specific vid: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGjWpI2NrK9jiZI Super in depth and helpful tip. I made a template for this like he described so every time I open Ableton it’s all setup and ready to go
@PRxChuletaz3 жыл бұрын
@Anand Shah The reason for using fruity balance instead of the Mixer channel fader might be for one reason: Mixing (I sound dumb but hear me out). If you use your Mixer fader for automation, when you get to mix down the track you can't use those faders anymore to "properly" mix and instead would have to either resort to the volume knob in Channel rack OR edit the volume through the automation which is not ideal for mix downs. As to why the other ones, LFOTool is not midi trigger so you will have constant sidechaining meaning that if you wanted to sidechain specific parts differently you would need to have multiple LFOTools and have automation turning them on and off when needed (wastes a lot of CPU and time). Kickstart and VolumeShaper I don't know but yea, it basically goes back to the flexibility of creating unique automations easily without much CPU use (since Fruity Balance is a stock plugin). Hope my explanation made sense and helped, have a good day

learning about this possibility w/ VolumeShaper was an eye opener for me. i appreciate the extra versatility and convenience vs the traditional approach.

Man, after a year and a half and finally having some progress and success, I *totally* agree with him that you need to start multiple things quickly. Just drag in a kick and some percussion, maybe use EQ to tune some of the percussion (i.e., pull out a focus on a pitch), then search your library for crazy words, like "plastic" or "rubber" (I guess this would be good with splice, but I don't use it, yet?), drag some of those samples in, and arrange a four or eight bar loop. If you listen to the tuned percussion, you might get a suggestion for a simple melody. Lather, rinse, repeat as fast as you can for a day. If you get one good idea (you will), you succeeded.

Nah, just put it aside for a week. Don't listen. Come back to it after you've worked on other things, maybe listened to released music. Then you'll be able to master. But: work quickly. That's what real mastering engineers do.... It doesn't take them long because they know they'll lose their objectivity. It also increases their revenue per unit of time ($$$). ☺️

Some nice bits, can’t lie. Doh I learned from Underbelly that it really helps to have the mix you want ready and then treat it like sending it to a new project just for mastering purposes. You force yourself to take of the creative hat and put on the technical one.

Does anyone know if something similar this morph filter is available as a vst for other DAWs? I mean one could surely achieve a similar effect with high/low/band pass and band stop filter combinations, but just having this "morph" knob seems a lot more convenient :D
