I polished the cases of my 74 Sportster, never do that again! Great video, your rebuilding the carbs episodes helped me with my friends 74 750K. A run through the ultrasonic cleaner had them looking like new.

A few weeks ago I saw an older vid where a guy used Marvel Mystry oil on a rag to remove heavy aluminum oxide from an old Honda dirt bike. A wipe on and let set then wipe off. Really took quite a bit of the corrosion off. Might be something to try if you have any other AL needing clean up. Still needs polished up then but I was blown away at how much it cleaned up the rims and head and fork bodies.

Hey Dino, is there an oil seal that goes inside of that tachometer drive mounting hole? And if there is does it go in from the inside or can you install it from the outside without having to take the valve cover off? If you have that info that would be greatly appreciated, thank you Dino!

Just a tip for the future, The easiest way to mount the engine into the frame is to lay the engine on its side and lower the frame down over it. Especially if you don't have anyone to help you. It also saves on scratching the fresh new paint on the frame. 👍

I was thinking of the cb the other day. When it comes down to painting the bike. I think it would be cool if you painted the frame matte black. then paint tank and the fenders gloss black. Then do a vinyl wrapp for the paint design. That way you can change out the paint design when ever you wanted

Great idea with the drano. I have 79 cb750 and was wondering if you have any great tips on cleaning and degreasing the engine without damaging gaskets, seals, carburetors and electrical.
@GunFunZS9 жыл бұрын
A 30/70 solution of water and classic pine sol does great as a degreaser/ mild etch to brighten up these things. Great for carburetors.

The primary gas released in this reaction is hydrogen. In college we would do a similar thing to generate hydrogen in a glass bottle. It gets very hot and can crack the bottle pretty easy. We used it to fill up balloons and set them on fire later. But yes, sodium hydroxide is pretty dangerous. A lot can go wrong in a hurry if you're not careful.

Is the layer of aluminum oxide on the inside of the valve cover of concern? I did this and I'm worried about the Al2O3 breaking off in the oil while the engine is running and ruining bearings. Thanks!
@johnmeurer47805 жыл бұрын
If its a 750 i doubt any aluminum oxidation would harm the engine. Mine had rain water in it for a unknown amount of years before i bought it for $100. Drive mine every day to 8-9k rpm's with no problem. I have 9k miles on it to since i bought it. Want to make mine a high reving 836, so maybe i want to have some sort of problem that would make me go this route, my oil pressure is a little low.

Why not spray a clear coat to prevent oxidation later? Are there any decent clear coat rattle can products available that will handle the heat? I was thinking something ceramic like what you use for headers. I know there are products available from auto parts stores, but have no idea if they are any good or if the finish would ruin the look of all that polish work.
@GunFunZS9 жыл бұрын
Aaron Fink If it gets cooked, or chemically stained, or yellowed with UV, it looks awful and is a bear to remove. More work than a simple re-polish. Also, these air cooled machines get pretty hot around the exhaust headers. I've had a hard time keeping exhaust rated paint on mine.

@HackaweekTV8 жыл бұрын
Yes just wipe it all down with a terry cloth rag and some soapy water. Rinse well with clear water. It's just aluminum oxide, but darker because of the chemistry. Dull light grey looking aluminum has a coating of the same thing but it's lighter in color because of how it forms slower out in the air.
