I use a Stickvise, with the rod held in the jaws of a Panavise. It holds the board nice and securely, but still allows me to set it at a more comfortable angle. The Stickvise is perfectly usable flat on the bench, though. One thing I suggest with the Stickvise, is to replace the black plastic jaws with the optional Teflon jaws. It handles heat from soldering irons or hot air pencils a lot better.

You will have a much easier time with your assembly if you pre-tin only a single pad per component. It will still secure the component, will allow it to lay completely flat on the board, and will allow you to fine tune the alignment while the single pad is molten. Also, you wont bend / distort pins trying to get multi-pin components to lay flat and eliminates the need to try to heat multiple pads simultaneously.

Ugh.. i hate those 3rd hands with the tiny easy to tip over bases. I upgraded to one with flexible arms and a 7" diamater yellow "flower" shaped steel base. No more tipping.

Omnivise looks good but $60!!!! Yikes. I guess it’s worth it if you use it for a living but too steep for a hobby tool

called "OmniVise" and yet locks a piece to a single flat plain with zero adjustment. doesn't seem very omni... could just save 60 dollars and mash 2 o rings between a couple flat washers on your choice of nut/bolt pair. also its 2021 time to get a ts-80 usb-c iron. its the best thing for your kit and its God awful watching you try to solder with that VW bug sized weller lol.
