So your girl here had a thing for Greek mythology- in particular this couple- so here’s my take on what I’ve read and researched. Persephone (originally named Kore) is the first born child of the Olympian’s children. Hades himself is also the first born of the original Olympians themselves. According to Greek culture, technically this makes them betrothed to one another. So when Hades finally decides to take on Persephone as a wife he goes to Earth to seek her out. Upon laying eyes on her he immediately falls in love and runs to Zeus (her father) and tells him he wants her. Zeus agrees and tells Hades to take her. -which again in Greek culture this basically marries them because Zeus (her father) “gave her away” to her husband. Demeter (Persephone’s mother), however hears about Hades intent on taking her daughter and is having none of it. So she comes up with a plan to turn Persephone into a tree (😑🤷‍♀️) so that she can forever keep her daughter with her and away from Hades. In a rush, because he heard what Demeter was planning on doing, Hades decides to kidnap Persephone before it can happen. This results in “the rape of Persephone” as it is called, where Hades comes from the ground in his chariot and kidnaps Persephone as she is in a field of flowers. Apollo, the god of the sun, had witnessed Persephone’s capture from his chariot in the sky and runs to tell Demeter. Who is _enranged_; And proceeds to fall into despair and neglect her duties and allows the human world to suffer and become a frozen waist land as she searches for a way to save her daughter. Meanwhile, Persephone and Hades are falling more and more in love as they get to know each other. (In some versions it is even said that Persephone herself was the true ruler of the underworld and Hades only drew the slot for it because he was destined to marry her). Anywho- Zeus realizes that the world can’t go on without Demeter fixing it and the human race will die unless he fixes something. So he sends Hermes (god of travel, trade, wealth, etc.) to the underworld to tell Hades he has to give Persephone back. In a last ditch effort to keep her with him, Hades offers Persephone a pomegranate; because if you eat the food of the underworld you are not allowed to leave! (because you’ll die 😬). She eats 6 seeds and is then forced to leave the underworld and return back to her mother. Demeter is estatic to have her daughter, only to learn that the Fates have found out that Persephone has eaten from the underworld and must return. However, they compromise with Demeter and agree to allow six months of Persephone on Earth with her mother; and six months in the underworld with Hades- a month for each seed she ate. ... and that’s about it. Also cool side note- a lot of versions say that all the really bad punishments that were given to humans sent to Tartarus were executed by Persephone herself. Like the one guy- King Sisyphus (the dude who was punished by being forced to roll a bolder up a hill only for it to fall down at the very end and for him to do it again everyday)- yeah that was Persephone because she was pissed that he made a fool out of her husband by escaping the underworld and tricking Thanatos (Death). Bottom line- Hades is honestly the only faithful God and is straight up an all around good husband. And Persephone is this boss ass bitch Queen, who is literally rainbows and flowers -but like also Death and punishment and her name literally means “destroyer of light”. So like- what a power couple ... thank you for coming to my ted talk.... I ship it 🖤

In some versions, as far as i have heard, hades fell in love because he was shot with a love arrow. the reason was that the gods of love and passion hated that some of the gods didn't marry, and stayed virgins and skipped passion, persephones mom worked hard to protect her chastity (i might have butcherd that word), so when they found hades walking towards persephone, they saw a chance to change that.

I think that, even if Persephone hadn’t eaten the pomegranate seeds, she would’ve still returned to the Underworld. Hades gave her everything she wanted and never cheated, which is more than can be said for some gods (cough cough Zeus cough cough) and was completely willing to wait for months without seeing her. He also gave her an opportunity to leave the strict protection of her mother, and gave her much more freedom. So... yeah. In my opinion, Hades is portrayed badly and he is not evil, just alone and unlucky.

Greek mythology always made me sick. Mainly for the fact that insest was the main jig back then. But Hades is my favorite God. Many people think he is evil, but actually, the real lore states that Hades was a faithful husband, a strict rule follower, and did his work very well. The name 'Cerberus' translates to 'spotted' meaning the Hades name his three head monster Spot. Gotta love this dork. He even got shot with a poison arrow trying to save Cerberus, and kidnapped two kids when they came to the underworld to steal Persephone.

Persephone knew that if she ate the pomegranate seeds she would be linked to the underworld forever, so I think she didn't mind to be queen there. As for her loving Hades, I think she did. The start between them was weird 'cause he did kidnap her after all, but he was very different from other male gods. He respected and valued her, and really fell in love with her. Zeus for one could never respect a woman's will.

I hate the fact that almost everyone looks at the "newer" tellings of this story, where Hades is made to look like a controlling a-hole. The older tellings show Persephone finding a way to the Underworld and Hades started to like her cause she was the only one who wasn't afraid of him and saw him as a kind caring man, Demeter doesn't approve and tries everything to make Hades look evil and try to control her daughter until Persephone eats a pomegranate so she can get away from her, Demeter goes to Zues and Hades not wanting war agrees to the compromise only after discussing with Persephone the terms of the compromise

I would like to add though- the oldest version is the Homeric hymn to Demeter and she does get carried off by Hades it quotes “he hustled her, screaming, into his car, and carried her off, disregarding the protests that she cried aloud to her father, Zeus, who is highest of gods.” It continues to sort of hint that she eventually came to love him hence why she agreed to eat the pomegranate seeds but we don’t actually know for sure everything in the underworld because the hymn was largely focused on Demeter and her sorrow.

Persephone, Knew she was worthy of more than being her mother's pet.. Persephone, was more complex, had more powers ( I think her mother was jealous and wanted to keep such a close eye on her so she'd never develop them) had a bad side, I think Hades knew it.. I think he unconditionally loved Persephone and knew she deserved to be a Goddess and no pet. Hades saw Persephone, for all that she was a creator, and as a unbiased/scales of justice, punisher of the worse souls in Underworld. Persephone , now knowing what true love was and all that Hades did for her.. She saw him.. I don't think Persephone ever leaves Hades... She does her duties from below.. instead of making agreements, and going to Mt Olympus, to be with mommy dearest, who has a meltdown, because she can't control her pet. Who was far more powerful than she ever could have been..

@Proud Indian depends on the version really. There really isn't a cannon version,in some versions,persephone accidentally finds the underworld and chooses to stay. And even in the version where she gets kidnapped she still falls in love with him. Most people just choose to "believe" in the version where they have a loveble relationship cuz you know if you had to choose between a rapist who you don't like and a husband you love,you'd obviously choose the husband.

In some variations of this story, Persephone wanted to marry Hades and when her mother refused, she was a participant in the "kidnapping plot" and when she was to return to Olympus, Persephone was so fearful her mother would *not allow her* to return to Hades when it was time, it was her own idea to eat the pomegranate seeds so that she would *always* be allowed to return to her husband. There are hundreds of variations of this story, personally I prefer the epic love story between the two. Hades is the only Greek god completely devoted to his wife, never cheating on her.

The way I see it, Persephone is a goddess. She has no need to eat. She also had to have known that eating the food of the underworld ties you to the underworld. And ate six seeds. That seems... rather on purpose to me. Almost as though she was making a choice in becoming the wife of Hades and Queen of the Dead. Casting him as a villain completely removes Persephone's agency. She knew what she was doing.
@vaggos013

Ascalaphus or not (in different versions of the myth) in Greek Mythology and Ancient Religion Persephone didn't eat the pomegranate seeds on purpose. It was a kidnap of a female deity by a more powerful male deity. It is romantic for some people to imagine that Persephone willingly stayed in the Underworld with an unpopular god because of true love at first. By fact it was an abduction that is why Persephone was screaming and afraid (a symbol of how death suddenly takes the life of human). All these are myths people used in order to explain phenomena (the circle of seasons) and also parts of an ancient religion, not a novel in which you try to imagine more things about the characters.
@Boss_Isaac
@Boss_Isaac 5 жыл бұрын
+vaggos013 If you read the _Homeric Hymn to Demeter,_ you'd know that to not be the case. The text explicitly states that Hades did indeed give Persephone a pomegranate seed for her to eat before she left the Underworld, but between Persephone leaving and her returning to Earth/reuniting with her mother, it says nothing of her having actually ate it. It is only after Persephone returns to the Earth that we are made aware of the fact that she did indeed eat the pomegranate seed, when Persephone tells her mother about Hades’ abduction of her and how he forced her to eat the seed (“Surely, mother *I shall tell you the whole truth.* When Hermes, the helpful swift messenger, mae from father Zeus and the other heavenly dwellers to fetch me from Erebos, so that seeing me with your own eyes you might desist from your anger and dreadful wrath against the immortals, I myself sprang up for joy, but Aidoneus slyly placed in my hands a pomegranate seed, sweet as honey to eat. *Against my will* and *by force he made me taste of it.”* - The _Homeric Hymn to Demeter;_ trans. by Apostolos N. Athanassakis). These words are explicitly contradictory to what we, the audience know-we only saw that Hades gave her the seed. It allows us readers to come to the conclusion that Persephone did eat the pomegranate seed, not because she was coerced, but that she did so out of her own volition; she made a conscious choice and ate the seeds _willingly._
@vaggos013
@vaggos013 5 жыл бұрын
Ok this is your conclusion, it doesn't mean it is the right. In the ancient Greek Religion (today's Mythology) Persephone was the Queen of the Underworld but wasn't her choice at first. Because it was a part of religion whatever was written exactly they believed it as it was a fact, it is not a novel for a reader to find hidden conclusions by his/her imagination or thought. What i see on youtube is many that people choose versions of myths (even if they were not the popular ones in ancient Greece) or their own ideas in order to make their own version of stories that fit with their taste. Whatever.. Every opinion is respected.

True. But Tartarus isn't the underworld though, it's just a part of the underworld, or in some versions a seperate realm entirely, though Hades still threw evil souls into it. If you wanna refer to the underworld by name, it's actually "Hades", after it's ruler. Tartarus is also one of the primordials, the oldest and most powerful deities in Greek mythology. So Tartarus is not only a hell hole, it's a sentient hell hole that is older and more powerfull than any of the Olympians and Titans.

He kidnapped her but he never forced himself on her. He went out of his way to impress her by lavishing her with gowns, jewelry, gardens, music, and feasts, but she never took pleasure in them until she could return to earth as part of their deal. Some stories say she enjoyed her time in the Underwood, as opposed to the secure life under her mother's constant watch. She was kind of like the sheltered woman that had a taste for the dark side of life once let off the leash. Just my theories, she may have grown to love him in time.

Aravalien Fenumiel Not only that, but it’s worth noting that Demeter’s “tantrum” was so heinous and showed such blatant disregard for human life that she made *freakin’ ZEUS* of all people look more sane and reasonable in comparison. And with a character like Zeus, that’s really saying something! Don’t get me wrong; Zeus’ meddling with the love lives of Hades and Persephone without telling either Demeter or Persephone in advance was definitely a dick move, but at least he was (eventually) willing to fess up and try to work out a deal with everyone involved. It also helps his case to an extent that he did so specifically to try to save the humans who were suffering because of Demeter’s sociopathic streak. Demeter, on the other hand, has no such redeeming moment in the story. I get that she was upset over Persephone’s kidnapping, and understandably so, but she officially crossed the line when she decided to create a worldwide famine in retaliation, killing countless innocent people who were not in any way involved in the kidnapping, and being perfectly willing to wipe out all life in the entire world (including even more innocents). Heck, some interpretations (but to be fair, not all) have Demeter intentionally causing fall and winter afterward (during which time all life on earth suffers and/or dies) not as a side effect of her being sad while Persephone is away, but rather as a deliberate attempt to spite the Olympians for the whole fiasco. Say what you will about Demeter’s motives (which, again, are perfectly understandable) or about how clingy she is, but out of all of the characters in that particular story, she was the only one who was perfectly willing to kill and endanger innocents in order to get her way. So yeah, whatever sympathy I might have had for Demeter officially died at that point (no pun intended).
@LittleMissRequiem
@LittleMissRequiem 4 жыл бұрын
Haven Would you also knowingly kill and/or threaten to kill every single innocent person in the entire world during your “big enough fit” for that purpose (and yes, Demeter is directly quoted as threatening to do exactly that), regardless of the fact that not one of the people whom you were killing/hurting had anything whatsoever to do with the kidnapping? I sincerely hope not, but if so, please seek some kind of professional help. 🤦‍♀️

I also read that Zeus was suppose to inform his daughter; Persephone that the flower she picked was like a marriage proposal if she picked it it was a 'yes' if she didn't it was a 'no' so in Hades point of view; once Persephone picked the flower she had agreed to marry him, and in Greece at the time it was common for Husbands to kidnap there bride-to-be's, so I don't think Hades was a villain (I just think he was really desperate/lonely), he isn't ever a villain in Greek Myth; he's known as one of the most just Gods in Greek myth's

Even as a kid, he was my favorite "villain" and when I grew up to find out he just seemed like a lonely guy, it made my heart break a little for this immortal being that was suffering so many months out of the year every year for his lover. He was truly the only God that seemed to be okay with women being "equal" and respected Persephone for more than just being a baby maker. He wasn't perfect, but he wasn't a complete asshole either. He's like the perfect anti-hero, next to Lucifer. Interesting, then, that they both seem to share that role of ruling the underworld depending on where you look.

History has vilified Hades as some form of evil or negative figure. Yet ironically, out of all the Gods, you would probably want Hades as a spouse compared to the others: >Has a stable, high position job as ruler of the underworld, has others working under him (Charon). >Has his own place to stay. >Is the wealthiest out of all the Gods, seeing as he is also the God of Wealth. >Has a cool and loyal dog. >Is more or less a faithful husband. >Puts up with his wife going on extended visits to see her mother for months on end. >Is still somewhat friendly with the other Gods. Compare this to his brother Zeus >Lives in a mountain with his extended family. >Continuously get into arguments with other Gods. >Constantly sleeps around with other Gods and Mortals. >Has fathered countless illegitimate demigod children. His wife at times attempted to screw them over. >Has no real job to speak of, constantly skipping off to screw around with mortals. >Is violent, smiting or punishing mortals at a whim. >Is whipped by his wife, fears her tantrums. Is unable to help his illegitimate children when she goes after them. Who would you want to hang around with? A wealthy, loyal family man, or a womanising, violent, whipped man.

Hades truly loves Persephone a lot, and is faithful to her where as the other gods and goddesses would have many affaires with mortals while they are married( Zeus and his many affaires with women as an example.) Those greek mythology characters that we thought are evil such as medusa and hades were those real ones that's soft and nice but forced to be dark and evil. If ya know what I mean.

I really love the couple Hades and Persophone. I kinda love Hades in general! I think that he's just unappriciated and misunderstood. Since he's the god of the underworld, or the land of the dead, people don't really se him with a good eye. And I really do believe that he trully loved Persphone. I mean think about it: he treats her with respect, shows her compasion and love, is willing to wait SIX MONTHS for her........AND STILL REMAINS LOYAL TO HER LOVE!!!! He's the only God of the big three( Zeus, Poseidon and Hades) that has only ONE wife. And I also belive that Persephone really loved Hades...despite that hicup at the begining of their relationship. So I think Persephone would have come back to Hades, even with out the seeds. And let's be honets ladies.....(and dudes if you fit that category), a man that you love, loves you back, is wiling to spend just 6 months with you and waits for you the rest of th year......AND HAS NEVER ONCE CHEATED ON YOU, it's the kind of guy you want to keep as long as you can! Am I right?

he did cheated on her but Persephone is like his number one girl. Hades has the least infidilities and is the most loyal to his wife. Persephone also cheats on Hades, Adonis. Both husband and wife did cheat on one another. they are also fiercely jealous. Persephone is known for turning Hades' mistresses into flowers. Hades well you know

I think Zeus is actually the villain in this story. He keeps making promises to both Hades and Demeter regarding Persephone that he can't keep. He never thinks about how his actions or decisions will affect the three and the rest of humanity and because of his lack of foresight the story ends with neither Hades or Persephone being truly satisfied with the outcome, not the mention the humans and nymphs who suffered through all this.

Insert Google Username: I feel like Aphrodite could be the villain of this story too. Why: Persephone grew to be very beautiful which caused all the men to go flocking after her making Aphrodite jealous because she hates girls who are prettier than her. She knows that Hades loves Persephone but because of his bad rep and the fact he lives in the spooky underworld, he won't be allowed to marry Persephone. Aphrodite realizes she could use this to her advantage and orders her son to shoot Hades with one of his arrows making him twice in love with Persephone, thus impulsively acting on his emotions and bursting out of the earth to drag the innocent girl down into the world, thus helping Aphrodite to get revenge on Persephone and regain all the men's attention.
