Renown is a currency in the game you earn by having many family members hold tiles plus a whole bunch of other factors. So you want to put your family on a lot of thrones so you get more renowned that can be spent on bonuses that help every member of that dynasty

How I use alliances is to use there forces to help conquer or put down rebellions. So traditionally I try and get one or two when i really need it outside of that i marry my family for skills,. Try to find people with traits like quick, or intelligence or genius. The more skill points an induvial has the easier it is to run a nation.
