Let’s settle the debate on regular pavement and VHT: which is the quickest accelerating American car in history, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demom 170 or the Lucid Air Sapphire?

In this episode, we race the two most powerful American production cars in history, the 1234-hp Lucid Air Sapphire and the 1025-hp Dodge Challenger SRT D170.
The first race takes place on regular asphalt, with our standard weather-corrected numbers. With the help of veteran drag racer, we achieve the quickest 0-60 and ¼-mile times ever seen from a Challenger. But is that enough to beat the Sapphire?
Either way, the Demon’s Mickey Thompson drag radials aren’t meant for an unprepped surface, so we leave Willow Springs and head to the Famoso Drag Strip to race on “glue” - the VHT-prepped surface.
Here, Tom Bailey’s experience launching the Challenger pays dividends as we try to recreate Dodge’s claimed 8.91-second quarter-mile run and dethrone the Lucid. Will it work?
Let’s fight about it.

Not a single street legal Demon 170 exists that does under 9 seconds quarter mile. That is simply not possible on street legal tires, not that the Demon would do it with pre-heated drag tires on superglued tarmac either. I doubt it If you want sub 9 seconds 1/4 mile times on street legal tires you need a rocket engine.

@@G82Wattsyall always come with these bullshit excuses 😂 the man driving in this video is a professional drag racer as well. Dodges suck at launching, and they're especially worthless on a non prepped surface. The fact still remains that anyone can get a lucid to run 9.0, you need a favor from the gods to get your demon to do it, though.

@kkellywv
@kkellywv 22 күн бұрын
Dodge's 8.9 claim was with a single seat spec car, which the one in this video wasn't, and with MUCH better density altitude and track prep. You know as well as anyone that DA can make or break an ICE car and not all "track prep" is equal. You could tell it still wasn't hooking by the in-car shots showing intense wheel hop and it wasn't pulling the wheels up anywhere near as high or as far as what a lot of the other ones do. I've seen stock ones almost trip the 60ft timers with the back tires. It takes very low DA and excellent track prep on the factory tires or going up a size in the rear to get a D170 to dead hook. There are privately owned stock D170s running in the 8.8-9.2 range either on the factory rubber or with a wheel/tire swap. With all that said, Tom Bailey is a phenomenal driver and the Lucid is an incredible car, no doubt about either of those.

Everything about it is top notch from start to finish. It’s the only electric car that actually gets my mouth watering. Bravo to the entire Lucid team. Let’s just hope electric cars can finally become practical and viable in more real world scenarios other than driving around town. Ranges and charging times are absurd for people who drive more than 300 miles consistently. To be fair, this was in Famosa. Famosa is known for it's terrible DA. I have a friend that goes there, he lives in Bakersfield. It's 600+ feet above sea level and the average DA of over 3000ft most of the time. Just for reference, you can search DA online and on 7/10/2024 at 4pm, Famosa had a DA of 4400ft about sea level. General rule is, for every 1000ft, a car loses 3% of it's power. To hit that 9.7 time, it was probably late in the evening when the DA dropped a little bit.

Quite frankly, i love the presentation on this, the humor is great and the theatrics are on point! Now that the praises are out of the way, lets get down to facts. A fuel burning engine can NEVER beat an electric engine on equal ground because simply put, the fuel burning engine needs to rev to produce torque, but the electric engine can and will produce all the torque you want from a standstill if you give it 100% of the battery power it requires to do so. In this case, the fact that the electric powered car had 4wd and the fuel engine car had only rwd biases the results even more and gave the clear win to the Lucid even before anything started. That being said, don't get me wrong... I still have my hair standing upright hearing that supercharger whine from the Dodge while the lucid impresses me but makes me yawn... I'll still take the smiles per gallon any day over the 3 quarter miles worth and you have to wait 4 hours to get back home. On top of that just for good measure, i still prefer the smell of race gas compared to heated electronics any day also, but that might be just me. A car or any vehicle is always about the driver and the experience, nobody actually gives a fudgesicle about the numbers unless they are buying a car for just... well, the numbers in their wallet. The real enthusiasts buy a car for the pleasure of driving and owning it, not for ink on paper and nothing else. Feel free to disagree with me, but i stand my ground and won't budge an inch no matter what you say. These things can't be quantified with just numbers and are a "user experience" type of deal no matter how people get heated about not wanting to have an open mind on things they don't like.

Maybe EV's destroying everything in acceleration will make people see that there is more to driving enjoyment than raw power. Maybe people will realize there is a reason so many of us would rather have a slow manual ICE car that is good sounding than something fast but soulless.

I agree, but at the same time I would also rather have a completely silent Tesla that can hit 0-60 in under 4s than have a 00-10s shitbox that's just loud for loudness's sake without actually having the performance to back the noise up.
@Dolby109
@Dolby109 19 күн бұрын
@@m_ism Well I don't want just loudness, but a little volume is good as long as the engine sounds ok (most N/A I4's don't without a very good exhaust, but they can through loud induction noise). But I would rather have say a cheap Boxster that is relatively slow but sounds great (flat-6) and is manual than a Tesla that is much faster.

Absolutely, except for "Bay Area pride." Can't give the Bay Area the pride, though. Living there currently isn't the same as his growing up/being raised/influenced. That's like saying Los Angeles Pride for Magnus Walker. Jason's not a product of the Bay Area (and Hagerty is based out of Michigan), though it's cool to see something more local (same with content from the Zygrene channel).

@@lynncowan9864 Nah, not Clarkson. Jason is the American Chris Harris. Clarkson was always more about funny and biased analogies charged with much more ego, and didn't have the skill and precision to actually articulate what a car was actually like to drive... going back and watching old Top Gear and such, yes, I love it, but it's a totally different class of automotive enjoyment. Top Gear was about the trips, the cheap car challenges, and humor than anything genuinely factual. Since then, reviewers like Cammisa, Harris, Catchpole, Savage Geese, Throttle House-- people who actually get in and have a discussion because they have a better medium to work with, rather than being shoved into a TV platform that MUST appeal to EVERYONE or else it gets canned: KZbin lets us choose what we want to watch, skip, etc. far easier than a TV platform ever could. I mean... a decade after really doing much, I still bump into people who recognize my Toyota Echo (it's really funny to think about people getting excited to meet a guy in a Toyota Echo, I know, and that was when it was a lot less interesting) but that's exactly what KZbin was about. But it does suck that they limited the revenue possibilities, making it yet another scramble for popularity ("smash that like and subscribe"). Removed some of the motivation for a lot of folks.
