Hair sheep are bred to shed. Improper breading results in animals who don't.

Great job, interesting explanation! I don’t understand how the sheep’s owners could leave her unshed, matted fleece unattended for so long. Was the sheep a victim of neglect, or of ignorance?

Me too, KEPC. I find the only upsetting thing is the owner's neglect, but I understand that is out of Katie's control. All she can do is educate and give much needed care to the sheep.

I watched a video about a sheep that had run loose for over a decade getting shorn. Something that really bothered me was the over a dozen nicks left on his skin. The shearer cut the wool to an even length but I can't see the reason for it.

I love your content! I have an American Jacob sheep that I bred myself, from a registered Jacob sire, unregistered Jacob dam. This year she had her first lambs (twins) and then shortly thereafter started to shed her wool. I'm curious now if she's got hair sheep in her heritage, but neither her sire nor dam ever did this. It doesn't look like wool drop due to sickness either. How can you tell (at home) if a sheep is a hair cross or just won the luck of the genetic draw and somehow reclaimed the ability to shed her wool like her primitive ancestors. Just curious. I'm getting the shearers out on the 24th and I'll ask them too but I'm just curious if there is a way to tell, and should I just gently pull out the remaining wool (it comes out in tufts with the gentlest of tugs)
@rightchoiceshearing
@rightchoiceshearing 11 ай бұрын
Hey! the best way to tell is look for hair. It will be much coarser than the wool fibers. It is very obvious to a trained eye if hair is present. Your shearer should totally be able to give you an educated answer. 🤘🏻

It blows my mind why people get animals that need special/regular care, like hoof care for horses, shearing for sheep, etc. It takes alot less time and money to keep them up than to catch them up, plus it is just the HUMANE thing to do.

Help! I am a 59 woman who loves animals. I have a pet sheep (seen as a baby lamb in one of my videos now grown up) and tried to clip her with my Heingiger Saphir dog clippers with an A5 #7 blade. She is a patient soul I did a terrible job. She is a dorper but doesn't fully shed. May I ask please, what kind of clippers should I buy and what kinds of blades? I also have a set of Double K 401 clippers is there a sheep blade I can use on those? My sheep is tame and is quite good with me handling her. She is patient with the dog clippers but I go through too many blades to get the job done! Help! Thank you so much for your content I cannot stop watching the fleece come off. You are kind to the animals.
@rightchoiceshearing
@rightchoiceshearing 11 ай бұрын
Hey! My advice is always Heiniger XPERTs, the sheep version. There is a very noticeable difference between shears and clippers. Now they run about 500 USD, but you’ll never need anything else. You can buy Osters for 400 dollars but it’s worth the extra for the upgrade. They are lighter which helps not tear up your arms while using and run cooler. The blades I’d recommend are 20 tooth combs. They reduce the chance of nicking as compared to 13s. Dorper have right skin so less chance anyhow. For sharpening, I recommend sending them to premier 1. Many people have success there and it’s pretty inexpensive. I’d buy two sets (two combs, two 4 point cutters) and you should have no problem completing the task. Remember to turn off your shears when your outside of the wool. They rely on the sheep’s grease, as well as oil you provide to prevent friction which will fill them hella fast. Best of luck
