I’m an African American female going through this right now because of how I used to bun my hair. I would section my hair into five sections, put a rubber band around the middle section and then pull back and rubberband each of the other sections individually until I had one cohesive bun and it was all slicked down. That was me trying to make an effort to styling my hair and I ruined it by trying to make it look “neater.” It has started to grow back as I’ve learned to embrace my beautiful kinks and coils and just leave them be. Really great video. Like some other people in these comments not enough dermatologist know about African American hair care issues. Mine certainly didn’t have a clue what to suggest for me so I so appreciate you. ❤️❤️❤️

Military girls have the same issues! I just had to stop pulling my buns so tight and I also made sure I didn’t pull it back wet. That’s the worst. Damp or dry and then use hairspray to keep the hairs in place. I could always tell if I had it too tight because I’d get a headache. I’d go in the bathroom and redo it looser. Also you have the 4 pound or so headset concentrated to one area on the face and the straps rap around your temples scalp, crown, mid hairline. Depending on your hairstyle, how long you use it and what games you play, how tight you tie it and how fast you move it can definitley pull your hair out.

Thanks for the video Dr. Dray! This is very helpful. I've gotten my hair braided once and noticed those little bumps and irritation you were talking about along parts of my hairline. After I got the braids taken out I realized how bad it was for my edges, and they've slowly been growing back. I haven't gotten my hair braided since then (2-3 years ago) and I try to leave my baby hairs out and free when I style my hair. I also switch up my part a lot, which has been very helpful for me because I do like to wear my hair up and out of my face a lot! I also try to massage oils like castor oil into my hair (specifically the areas where my hair had broken off) every so often. These things have helped me see some improvement in the regrowth of y baby hairs, but I'm also a bit curious about the Rogaine you suggested. Thanks for the recommendation!

My cute long-haired Havanese dog developed Traction Alopecia due to wearing tight scrunchies on the top of her head; therefore, I no longer put her hair up like that. Luckily, the hair around her bald spot has grown out and covers it up for the most part. But now when I take her to the dog beach, I put sunscreen on the spot so she doesn’t get sunburned there. Note that I took her to a vet dermatologist who was able to correctly diagnose the alopecia after her regular vet was unable to; he thought it was an allergy issue. The derm prescribed some medication that she took for months which we hoped would bring back the hair follicles but to no avail. So for those of you with small fluffy dogs, don’t put their hair in tight ponytails or clips, or at least only on special occasions. 🐾 💗 😊

She’s addressing some great points here . I know women are just too rough with their hair and we often forget how fragile it is ! Ladies you do not have to put your hair too tight , it can cause headaches too . Wear bonnets if you’re sleeping , do a hair mask every week too! If you have curly hair try to detangle along with a detangler for less breakage. When you brush to rough you’re also breaking more hair than needed too. To avoid gel usage you can also use aloe Vera gel which is amazing if you want to save your edges and are also prone to break outs . If you do braids, just ask for them to not do them so tight and to not braid your edges away if you think they take too much in the front

Hey Dr. Dray! Can I stop using rogaine for my traction alopecia once my hair regrows or will that risk me losing my regrowth? I know rogaine stimulates blood flow which helps the follicles heal themselves so they grow hair. If that's how it works, once the follicle is growing hair, shouldnt it continue growing after discontinuing use of rogaine? The hair growth would prove the follicle is healed. So once they are healed and hair starts growing back, Im good right?

Hello dr dray do ion charged hair dryer and straightner actually work is there any science behind their claim that they r less damaging than normal ones

Hi Dr. Dray, do you think you could do a video on how air flow/fans affect your skin? It’s summer so I constantly have my personal fan blowing to cool me down, but I noticed my skin drying out. I ordered a humidifier from dyson to try and help, but some tips and information would really helpful! Thanks ♥️

Can you using powder to conceal scalp exacerbate hair loss? I'm looking for a solution to excess scalp showing through my part and around my hairline.

Hi, is trichotillomania consider traction hair loss? And do the treatments that you mention work for people with tricotillomania? Thanks!
@arghhvideos4 жыл бұрын
I have trichotillomania too and I think this would be a different form of hair loss, because with trichotillomania the hair is directly pulled out, as opposed to hairstyles where there’s a consistent tugging. I personally have not found any products to be terribly effective in growing hair back from bald spots, unfortunately 🙁 just time.

Could you please do a video in medical tape contact dermatitis and skin products? I have a g tube that must be taped and my poor skin is wrecked. From my skin breaking down from friction to whelps under the tape. Please help, looking for any suggestions on how to avoid problems and treat.

I used to wear my hair in tight ponytails which lead to my frontal hairline shifting back and widening of my parting , I started using minoxidil and did notice improvement and regrowth and continued it for 2 years after which I stopped cause I did not want to depend on it lifelong . I experienced shedding after that and now I still have sensitive scalp although I don’t wear my hair in any tight styles. And I’ve lost a lot of my hair volume overall ever since TA . I’m not sure if I’ll ever get rid of my scalp tenderness. And if my follicles will grow back hair . I had really good volumnous hair before I developed TA.

I hate it when my hair touches me. It feels rly itchy and irritating on my skin. Because of this, for a few hrs at at night before bed and for a few hrs when I get up in the morning I have been wearing a hair wrap. It looks like a big tube of fabric and I wear it like a headband. It's my fave style bcuz not a single hair touches my face. Tonight though I noticed a chunk of hair missing near my temple, what on earth.... now I'm freaking out about traction alopecia. Is there a safe non damaging hairstyle to keep my hair out of my face? I thought the hair wraps were non damaging as they are soft fabric and are not tight and do not hurt my head.

Happy Monday, Dr Dray! It never occurred to me that the alcohol in leave in hair products could contribute to this issue. Thanks for the info! I hope you have a wonderful evening! 💖

Dr Gray, what do you think of the Purito oil cleanser? Could you do a video reviewing more of their products? I know you've talked about a couple in some other videos including their sun screen but would love to hear your views on more of their products like the from green oil cleanser and some serums and creams. Thank you!!! You're amazing! 💜💜💜💜

This is related to hair but kind of in a different direction to hair growth, I know you’re not an expert with curly or coiled hair because you have straight hair but my question is, is there a difference between hot oil treatments and room temperature oils on the hair? I want to know because I read an article saying that microwaving the oils your putting in your hair can lose its nutrients that it provides for you. Even if you have water in a pot (stovetop) and steam the oils in a glass or metal bowl it loses some nutrients but it doesn’t lose as much nutrients like the microwave does

Perfectly timed video! I have a spot near my hairline that I was just wondering might be the victim of traction alopecia. For this issue, if you stop taking the Rogaine, will the effect go away?
@katiej45544 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will, but it won’t cause that hair to fall out right away; it’ll happen over time so it won’t be super noticeable
