Iyengar is about attention to the very last detail of your alignment and proper posture. Here she is able to keep an close eye on every student in the class and direct them clearly - a rareity to be treasured.

Gratitude for this video. I suppose I might have the same response as many I've already seen were I not familiar with a few things and were I to think (in a Western way) that Yoga = Asanas = "should be" relaxing. 1.) This is an inversion and not to be taken lightly; not to be performed carelessly. And were one to 'relax' in this posture - allow the body to do what it wants (?) - not lift (?) - not align correctly (?) - you could irrevocably hurt yourself. 2.) Cervical facet joint degeneration / Nuchal Ligament (Overstretching --> Ossification) - Maybe you felt a little stress from your head to neck, nothing too bad so you kept at it. But look up either of those terms, familiarize yourself with those two topics, how they occur, and what the end result is, and practitioners will be grateful for this instructor. 3.) This instructor is Iyengar trained which is alignment based, precise, and make much use of props which enable correct alignment. This is not Yin or Jivamukti or (etc...). She's serious about it and is not being flowery in her language. Should she allow someone to get or stay incorrectly in an inversion so she has time to choose her words to sound more loving and relaxing? Do the practitioners, while on their neck, need to let go and relax? Contrary to American lore, not all yoga asanas/classes are going to be relaxing. (Tapas; heat; burn.) Some are going to be found as challenging which may even go so far as to initiate a fight/flight response in some people ; stress hormones rise, certainly. And this is the real yoga. The rest are just the postures I'm using to explore myself. If I'm lucky, I'll have a good instructor who is going to do her best to discourage my body to hurt itself so I can continue my exploration. I'm a yoga practitioner (and vinyasa style teacher) who approves this video and would love for Lois to be clear with me in whichever tone or style that comes naturally. I'd much less rather for her to allow my body to hurt itself.

Can you explain the reason the head on on the floor not something softer. I was under the impression that a hard floor made the pose less resting for the brain. Thank you. Paul
@francisinfocus3 жыл бұрын
The head doesn't need anything soft, yoga was done on the floor after all. All the weight is on the shoulders here so the head is not relevant. The blankets lift the shoulders higher than the head so the person doesn't squish the neck so much and choke. Note: inversions require a focused and wakeful mind, this is not the time to close eyes or let the brain relax. Unless you want to break your neck.

she is caring teacher giving attention to every1... thts good, but yoga is all about right breathing techniques while doing asanas & pranayam,,,, she must need to incoporate that in her teaching otherwise , its just like any other exercise .............Yoga is relaxing & soothing not intense at all & thts y correct/controled breathing is important , to get benefit out of asanas.. PS - tell the benefits of asana while doing it , mental psychology plays a great role to get 200% results.
@cav01297 жыл бұрын
This is an Iyengar class which is incredibly focused on perfect alignment, you can't get to meditation/relaxation if the alignment is incorrect ... at least that is the philosophy under BKS Iyengar. Only with correct alignment can prana flow properly .... most western yoga classes are not taught to this detail and students are in incorrect alignment and not receiving the desired purpose of each pose. That's why she is being very specific and making tiny corrections, these are all necessary for correct alignment and energy flow. Other school's of yoga have different techniques and philosophies, so you just have to find what technique works for you.

Iyengar certified teachers make sure students are in the engaged mentally and in the pose in the correct way. This can often mean they come across like a strict school teacher, it works! - I’ve been to many different Iyengar teachers all over the world.
