ECHO = Grunt ECHO One, Two, Three, and Four = Stabilization Team Designations, the reason I think this is because there are voice lines for grunts such as “Echo Four is all clear.” and also there are usually multiple grunts in squads, so they would probably have specific codenames such as Echo One, Echo Two etc.

Probably just a play on the word zombie/necrotic - the host is essentially a step away from death, the only thing keeping it alive is the headcrab forcibly controlling the damaged brain and keeping the mangled body working by means of pumping the organs and muscles with a plethora of hormones as well as functioning as a new immune system to prevent infection from seizing the open chest after it shut down the original one in order to control the body. For all intents a headcrab zombie is a dead man walking - and in fact will spend most of the time in a "sleeping" state where it seems not to be agonizing.

There are no Combine grunts in HL2, only soldiers. Grunts are second lowest human units in Universal Combine Empire's army, they are pretty much like upgraded Metro cops, Metro cops with cybernetic augmentations. Ones we see in HL2 are Soldiers and Elites, not grunts.

I hope this iteration of the Combine is kept in future Half Life games. More humanity but also more surgery. It almost implies they want to be in the military and generally like it. Which is WAY more scary and deep then the likely untrue idea the Wiki puts out that soldiers are mindless robots.

I don't think they have been deprived of it, they speak more methodically sure. But they still need morale boosting speech from Breen that implies that humanity's role within the Combine rests upon their shoulders, they swear, they say things like "We got him him now" etc. They probably just talk more in Alyx because the story allows for more opportunities to see the Combine out of combat.

Lore wise, it seems unlikely. By the events of HL2, the only Combine forces remaining with their humanity are the metro cops, which hardly could even be considered Combine. The soldiers remaining are all synths. Its unclear how much augmentation the Combine in this game have, but quite obvious that they are still thinking for themselves, and have personalities. From their hatred of Headcrabs, to the Ordinals direct line towards Alyx "Hello Target One". The synth Combine humans in the episodes are clearly not thinking for themselves, and only for the Combines survival. Even Zombines are so brainwashed (Or have enough control, due to being synthetic), that they will try to kill themselves, and Gordon, if the player gets close. Although we dont see any Zombine in Alyx, its likely they would function more or less like regular Headcrab Zombies. Although given the Combine we see are almost exclusively in a sealed off Infection Zone, they may have Headcrab resistant helmets, which were phased out after better training, Synths, and AR2s became more common.

They actually had another unique term for Antlions in HL2 as well in gameplay, occasionally when fighting a small group of antlions they'll refer to them as "untagged viromes" which is a line unique to antlions. The Nova Prospekt scripted dialogue only refers to them as biotics and never uses the term though so it's somewhat of a rarer thing to hear.

Maybe that the Ordinal's voice is hard to hear because Valve made it intentionally. Because Ordinal is the high-rank and a team leader, he hands the communications between an unit and another. They maybe made his/her voice hard to hear to censor the information they're sharing via the communication chatter, or it's just they made it so that each type of Combine soldiers is unique....

The Combine really like using medical themed terminology. They repeatedly refer to the presence of targets as an "outbreak" and killing as "sterilizing," in HL2 they call antlions "biotics" and refer to containing Freeman as "clamping," unused scripts had them describing their own snipers as "scalpels" and in Alyx the Suppressors are called "antibodies" by their squadmates.

You can blame Real World reasons for the difference - which is boring. In my headcannon the soldiers from HLA were partially prototypes which were the predecessors to the ones from HL2. We can't be sure if the ones from HL2 were already existing at the time of HLA but a propaganda poster seems to suggest that they did. So ask yourself the question what do you do with these early prototypes especially the grunts. You have a quarantine zone, would you use you main line infantry units for such a dangerous work in your backyard or would you use the more expandable ones in combination with some elite specialists?

At the beginning of the game they raid the resistance operation and capture both Eli and Alyx (capturing of dangerous dissidents would be something for a swat like unit I think). And in the quarantine zone they are operating in the dangerous backyard of City 17 no standard HL2 soldiers. Instead those Grunts, Ordinals, Chargers and Suppressors are deemed competend enough to guard the prison for an eldritch entity and to eliminate any rising threahts rising from the zone. So I would say they are more of a special forces unit than a swat team. The HL2 soldiers seem to be more of the standard infantry.
