Valve has as one of their lead animators a real wild-life photographer. They literally had to come back from a job out in the wild early to help with animations for this game. its why valve's alien creatures look so real. they have someone who's simultaneously an expert animal photographer and an expert animator. so they can infuse their animations with realism like this

@@memedude8303 armoured headcrab has armor because it's infected. There are different kinds of weird xen infections going on in the quarantine zone in half life alyx. One of them is this armour like tissue that grows on walls, plants and in this case, headcrabs.

Something I think a lot of people who haven’t had the opportunity to play this game might be missing out on is the scale of a lot of these creatures. Headcrabs are absolutely YUGE. Makes sense considering they need to be able to envelop an entire head, but it’s still kind of awe inspiring when you see them ‘in person’ for the first time.

The only way I really know how to describe their size is that the maw under them is the size of a human's head, not the entire crab itself. This should be a given, but regardless, it's terrifying. The maw is still surrounded by a lot of flesh too, so...

For returning enemies there are a few new sound effects that incorporate some of the old ones, but overall the new sound design (even for the whole game) has nothing on Kelly Bailey. Most of the new sound effects sound kinda the same and generic. With Kelly Bailey they each had a distinct and appropriate sound that could easily be recognized by ear, which is good for game design and gives each creature more character as well.

@@jarrodgay2220 It was Mike Morasky and yes he did consult Kelly Bailey, Valve mentioned it on their AMA on Reddit. They said he was trying to keep some of Bailey's Half-Life sound while still bringing his own thing. From the way everything sounds though, I get the impression that Morasky just gave Bailey a quick ring on the phone and listened to a few of his songs to get a rough idea. The few of Bailey's sound effects and songs that do remain are the only things keeping HL:A sounding like a Half-Life game. (I think they do a pretty decent job with the headcrab zombies though, but still would've like some more HL2 or HL1 sound effects mixed in there.
