@@Nemzali think HL 1 is a single day. He literally beat Nihilinth within a day. HL2 is a few days at best. We dont count the time jump 2 weeks because to him it was seconds. Morphine can be addicting and halucinations might occur. So...hes basically high as a kite if he does take a lot of damage. Also... since HL1 ends and he is frozen in time im not sure if he did rest or not but im assuming his body healed up in stasis and then he awoke on the train kinda like if he just teleported instantly from HL1's train to HL2's train in the blink of an eye. A few seconds of G-man "Rise and shinr" thing and he's off.

Add to that the fact that Father Grigori _recognizes the zombies_ and remembers who they were, honestly makes his character that much more tragic. Imagine seeing the people who relied on you for aid and leadership reduced to shambling husks, and then having to live with their agonized screams echoing through the streets you once called home, every day.

I think the outlying parts of City 17 survive (you get a good view in Episode II), so he might have as well. But the subsequent portal storm would definitely impact him, as would the hordes of Combine soldiers, advisors and synths fleeing the city.

@@JRexRegisI feel like the last place any combine forces fleeing City 17 would go through is Ravenholm. It’d just waste material and manpower at a time when they couldn’t receive any supplies from their homeworld. So, their retreat would barely affect Father Grigori, if at all.

Both are outstanding levels. Somehow horror just feels to work much better in games that aren't horror games otherwise. Same with the Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines haunted mansion level. I never really found any pure horror games any good, because you have agency and the game is purposefully built as something the player is supposed to be able to handle. There are only so many cards the game can play and only so many times it can kill the player before it runs out of the fear of the unknown. After which it's no longer horror in its core, just survival or action. A dedicated horror level in an action game can do basically all of the same, except the impact is felt much more because it's all unknown and unfamiliar to the player.

The characters that I connected with most were Eli and Grigori. Eli always reminded me of that uncle in your family that everyone loves because hes just so chill, intelligent, and kindhearted Grigori reminds me of the kind of outcast you might shoot a cursory glance at but nothing more. Someone who probably needed a companion the most in the series. Hes completely alone surrounded by friends and family that are all being enslaved by the headcrabs, barely alive knowing their current situation but helpless to stop it. His lines grieving you when you die show how much he valued you even only having just met you. Spoiler alert but when grigori receded into the fire at the end of the chapter i stayed there trying to take out all the zombies coming after him. Id like to imagine that its entirely possible he survives despite the burn injuries. He and Eli are the two characters I deeply felt their loss.

Although the ones seen in the games are nothing more than storage space for a useful mind, made by the combine. Gman is a hatched grub, and his idea was to become a businessman making "deals" for his employers behalf, that are those same grubs, that somehow have managed to stay hidden from the combine and are after revenge. To anyone wondering why the Ravenholm game by Junction Point Studios was canned, game development takes years to develop out (Half Life 2 for instance took 5 years) and so they were considering at the earlier a 2009/2010 release. However, in July 2007, Disney bought Junction Point to make the Epic Mickey games so the agreement between them and Valve imploded and the game fell apart.

if i am being honest, i do like the ideas that were presented in Arkanes scrapped project. While i do agree that some things felt out of place from waht was seen wiht this new zombie virus and a unessecary usage of Adrian Shephard, i honestly like the idea of Grigori having a similar ark to what he has in this mod which could work, if tweaked in the right direction. Maybe hes trying to desperately find some way to make humans immune to the Headcrab's Mind control ability, but as a result, changes Grigori and degrades his mental state, mutating him in a way not too different from what happens to anyone turned into a zombie by the headcrabs, perhaps a Headcrab zombie thats able to keep Grigori's intellect and doesnt decay like all other Headcrab zombies.

I was a little kid when I played Half-Life 2 for the first time. The moment I got to We Don't Go To Ravenholm and walked out to that first scene with the yard that has the sign on the ground and the chopped off legs swinging from the tree I shat my pants and turned the game off and I didn't come back to finish Half-Life 2 until I was in my late teens.

Ngl the headcrab that falls from the really tall ladder is just incredibly amusing to me. Its this weird moment of levity right before the horror of Ravenholm.

"I remember your true face..." is such a haunting line. Father Grigori is trapped in the hell that his former home has become, forced to endlessly fend off the tortured parasitized corpses of his friends and neighbors, his faith being the only thing keeping him going. And yet he still helps you, he still does all he can to keep people safe who wander into this nightmare of his, and he still stands firm in the face of adversity. I feel so bad for the guy, but he's one of the most badass characters I've ever seen. It's a shame that we only get as much of him as we do.

it feels good to watch a fun not taking itself too serious RichterOvertime video where he doesn't over wax poetic about games from his childhood like he's 50 years old telling us how "they dont make em like they used too anymore when things were better" ....that's a weird vibe to come for a guy who is barely out of his 20's XD

I'm gonna be honest, I've seen lots of videos that just are about... "Why X is Y" stuff like this. But I don't understand it. Why do we need a video explaining to us why a spooky chapter of half-life 2 is in fact spooky? Isn't it as obvious as the sun making light? Anybody who's played the game can get the generally dark tones of Ravenholm. notice the fact it's infested by headcrabs, feel the spooky atmosphere and all that. So, why are videos like this made? What are they for?

It’s just a catchy title and an excuse for me to talk about something I’m interested in. The video itself really barely has anything to do with why it’s scary, it’s just an analysis of the chapters lore, popularity, development history, and qualities. Why does it need to be made? Well, because I like ravenholm. Simple as.

>video starts with words that Half-Life has never been a horror >"game was filled to the brim with dark slapstick HUMOR, featuring scientists DYING in all sorts of FUNNY ways" Man, just because this game is old and nowadays it looks a bit silly (after around 20+ playthroughs) doesn't mean it was intentionally comedic. PEOPLE DYING BY BEING EXECUTED, FALLING WHILE BEING STUCK IN AN ELEVATOR or FALLING INTO A FUCKING ABYSS, GETTING CRUSHED UNDER PRESSES AND EATEN ALIVE BY ALIEN HOSTILE CREATURES IS SO MUCH FUN, I SWEAAAR. It is way too grotesque at times, but it's not supposed to be fun. It's just showing how much the things got out of control in BM. Oh, and don't get me started on "BOOOO RAVENHOLM IS SO SCARY, BOO". People have been playing this game for almost 20 years now, everyone knows about its history, and there are already many videos explaining what happened in Ravenholm. Get a new material. What's next, another (absolutely original, unfiltered and honest thoughts of the author btw) 15 minute video about "BOO SOURCE ENGINE IS S-S-SCARY BECAUSE LE LIMINAL SOMETHING-SOMETHING YADA YADA"? Maybe I'm being too "mean", but I'm honestly sick of people chewing on the same thing over and over again.

I remember watching my wife play through hl2, specifically ravenholme. She was terrified of the poison crabs and their mount. To the point that, one dark evening walking home from work, she convinced herself some hulking dude in a white jacket was one and was following her.
