In my opinion the half-life 1 graphics add a ton to the the atmosphere it has that creapy ps1/n64 vibe. I only played the game for the first time a few months ago but leaving the tunnels to see the signs of the early morning and zombies across the river will always stay with me.

Yeah, that is something early 3D graphics can do really well. It's detailed enough that you know what things are supposed to be, but also low detail enough that your mind has to fill in the gaps. And when your mind is set to things being spooky and scary, it can conjure up things far worse.

I loved They Hunger so much. Got it in the discs that came with the magazines. I was a little too young to not just freak out though. I remember I spent a lot of time looking through the models with Model Viewer, and listening to the sound effects. There's a lot of cool detail in the characters! One zombie has a dismembered arm punched through its chest holding a gun pointed up to under their head, and their head is blown apart. Implying someone punched a gun through them, shot them in the head, and still didn't mnage to kill them. And then the zombie is just walking around with that arm and gun still in it.
@SeaalCox Жыл бұрын
lol I always interpreted that model as: the zombie ate someone whole and then in an unsuccessful attempt to escape, the person tried shooting the zombie in the head thru its chest. I always assumed it was supposed to be a comedic model, though I suppose even with your interpretation, it still is.

And if its true he answered them once. They Hunger is one of those cooler mods out of them all, building a genuinely solid foundation for itself & standing out pretty well from Half-Life. If the original studio that made it compiled & connected all three campaigns together & released it separately as it's own game on Steam or some other site (with permission from Valve of course), it could've been one of the very few Gold Source titles ever made & released, & probably one of the best. The entire scenario it takes place in is unique to a zombie game, usually they take place in the present, during one of the two World Wars (for some reason) or in the future at some point. It's very creative for what it is & it's very creative for the limited tools they had at their disposal. Overall it could be claimed as the pioneer of videogame mods, there was a very slim amount beforehand, nothing really impressive, & after They Hunger the modding community became much larger & much more involved creating great experiences like Team Fortress & Counter Strike. Technically DOOM & Quake had strong modding scenes before Half-Life, but I don't count them because those mods weren't as expansive nor are they as cared for today. Now, just to fill my daily quota: Having They Hunger on Dreamcast & PS2 is so cool, I like PC gaming but I will always love Console gaming more & my favourite console is the Dreamcast, so knowing I can play They Hunger on my favourite console is so awesome & very impressive from the modding community. Another thing I wanted to mention is that at 20:55 you turn to look at the player next to you & his name is Soldier of Fortune, which is actually a classic FPS game from 1999 made by Activision, the same folks who now publish Call of Duty, & Soldier of Fortune is also on Dreamcast & I believe PS2, so I've fulfilled two Dreamcast references from one video, nice.

I remember playing this as a kid (I was about 9 years old and far too young) and it terrified me. I managed to get through it, but when I was coming to the end of the first episode, I could hear screaming down the street. At first, I thought it was in the game, but then when I realised it was real, I thought a zombie apocalypse was actually happening. My parents went outside to see what was going on, and I went with them, only to see that a small block of flats at the end of our street was on fire and people were evacuating. As far as I know, no one was hurt, but it was still scary and a weird coincidence. Apparently it was started by someone throwing a lit cigarette into the trash chute.

Oddly enough I knew about They Hunger due to Spike and Barley playing it. They never really finished it but it was the entry point for me. I feel most horror media always fall into the need to overly explain the "why" on monsters existence, but I get that at one point they kind of have to (either interest by the viewers or by the characters themselves). With that said I'm glad They hunger holds from doing it too early and lets you wander around amidst the chaos. And honestly it's kind of hard to chose between never explaining and upsetting the viewers or explain it and fall into a not-so-spooky cliché. Either way one thing is certain, the last helicopter battle is straight up BS. No ammo reload or health packs, could've at least give us a silly turret segment and be done with it. Hopefully someone decides to pick up the leaked files and do something with it. Can't be legally worse than the TF2 projects honestly. And yeah, the lead dev DOES look like the Unabomber.

According to Alfred and the various tape recorders in the asylum, Doctor Franklin wasn't insane and doing cruel experiments but was studying the zombies before becoming infected/zombified. The last tape recorder you find in the asylum before you climb up an elevator into a garage has a recording of him made after he got infected and went insane. The final boss fight isn't that bad if you are good at saving ammo (you can just melee most zombies if you're careful) and/or modify the skill.cfg file (I do that to make some things less unbalanced, like the zombie bull health for example) to make the difficulty less absurd. Going for headshots and meleeing zombies in the face saves you an absurd amount of ammo. I found it a lot easier to beat the helicopter boss fight by saving any grenade launcher ammo I found, quicksaving, and then using the MP5/G3's grenade launcher when the helicopter got close enough. In the Sven Co-op version of They Hunger, the "ranch gun" and "battle rifle" are an M14 battle rifle and M16/AR-15 assault rifle respectively. Also, the Tec-9 or AP-9 that appeared in the original mod was replaced by an M3 submachine gun (sadly it has only 20 rounds instead of 30 rounds and is often overlooked for the 50-round Tommy gun by most players).

My headcanon is that the soldiers weren't outright hostile for any malicious or nefarious purposes, just panicked and couldn't discern friend or foe properly. A fair number of zombies wield weapons by that point and can speak fairly clearly, as well as some having deceptively little damage or decay to their bodies. They likely barely managed to keep from shooting eachother by that point.

There was another half life horror mod I can't really remember the name of or what it was about so I'm going to try to explain it, You played as a Russian soldier, you went into a underground base infested with zombies. There was a helmet mechanic where you could sacrifice your vision for extra protection because they buffed head shots. I'm sorry if this isn't very helpful but seeing this reminded me of that mod

I'll always remember the brilliant simplicity of the scare with the first police officer. You see him off in the distance talking to someone and think "finally, an ally!" only to come closer and notice he's talking to a zombie. As you get closer he turns around and you see his face is *covered in blood* and he starts shooting you.

Nice bit of nostalgia. They Hunger was easily my favourite single-player mod for HL1, as a teen with too much free time in the early 2000s. And TBH, the main thing I remember from this was the first Zork sequence.

First playthrough of TH was the most memorable. Found it through Sven Coop, and it felt much grander before you learn the maps. Though I did start not liking the 3rd episode cause it loses the spooky vibe of ep1 and ep2. It was more like generic shooter with zombies, but it can still be fun. I remember hopping onto a random server late at night, we did like an episode or two, I hopped off, and the next night by pure chance the whole server was back to where I left off. I still like joining servers that run it, or rocking the vote to play TH on Sven.

It would be cool to see someone remake the They Hunger trilogy in the Black Mesa version of the Source Engine.

They Hunger exist inside the game Sven coop and it's regularly played in servers where you can pick and choose a campaign through vote where people walk to what campaign they want.

They Hunger was one of those mods I never fully completed it but yeah, it's a very iconic one as it inspired many horror mods for Half-Life like Cry Of Fear, Afraid Of Monsters, Resident Evil Cold Blood, Grey and obviously Nightmare House 2.

I'm 36. I played this when it first came out. I was 13. When you said you weren't yet alive in the 90s I wanted to scream. What fucking year is it, jesus christ.

I heard "I was not alive in the 1990s" and felt myself die a little more inside.

I've been running through this with a buddy in the spirit of Halloween and its the perfect spooky season game, Id swap out my monitor for a CRT if i had one handy. The Sven co-op version has a lot of fixed models like the bloodied up headcrabs being changed to severed heads with freaky spider legs which is clearly drawing from The Thing, the giant bullsquid is now a fish monster which looks really sick and yeah the weapons are much better looking and more fitting for the era/theme, sadly enemy spawns are increased in sven so playing that version solo is VERY difficult for someone who isnt a half life veteran.
